“The Most Beautiful Mansion in Madrid”
Reviewed 20 April 2011

This museum houses the collections of the Marques de Cerralbo, who had the most wonderful taste, and apparently a huge fortune. The museum recently reopened after four and a half years of restoration. The building and the furnishings are beautiful and very impressive.

The most beautiful thing I saw was the Murano chandelier called La Gondola, on the lower floor. The chandelier has the tones of pink, green, yellow, and turquoise. There are figures of flowers. Apparently it won the first prize in the Turin Expo of 1884. This is the most beautiful chandelier I have seen in Spain or anywhere else.

“Do not miss this one!”
Reviewed 21 January 2011

This 19th century building was intended as a 'mansion-museum' by the 17th Marquis of Cerralbo who wanted to leave his vast collection to the people. It is sumptuously furnished and decorated, and each room is jam-packed with wonderful exhibits. For sheer luxury it is equal to royal palaces but, of course, not on the same scale. At only 3 euros entry for adults, it must be the greatest museum bargain in Europe. The number of people allowed in at one time is limited, so you may want to arrive early, but we only had to wait about five minute. I don't know why this museum does not feature more prominently on lists of attractions in Madrid. For me it is a must-see.
