Our mistake was trying to take the Metro from the Airport to here. There are two train connections required and a lot of walking. Between the time and cost it would have been better to take a taxi as we did when returning to the hotel. If you do take the Metro and find your self in Puerto de Sol, or as they now call it Vodaphone Sol, than you might not see the hotel right away. Look for the man on the horse, face the direction the tail is facing and the hotel is just on the right.

We were welcomed in reception and escorted right to our room, which was on a high floor on the corner overlooking the plaza. The room was adequate, had shutters and noise reducing new windows. The curtains darkened the room quite nicely too. The bathroom was nice and also quite adequate. The bed and pillows were "European Firm."

The location and price can not be beat. You are right in the action. Also, the hotel has its own restaurant which was really good and serving up all the classic Spanish dishes. We had great olives, gazpacho, jamon, and salads. The Sangria was light and fruity too.

Since we had been to Madrid before, this was not our destination. We spent our time up in San Sebastian and all around the towns around Madrid. We spent a night here since we were flying out of Madrid the next day. We have stayed at the Intercontinental before, but felt it was so far away from everything, and since we only had one day in Madrid we really wanted to be in the heart of it all. When we come back to Madrid one day, I imagine we will stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room on the top floor for the best experience. You can watch all the tourists and attractions without having to deal with the gypsies.

We were family of four, stayed for about a week.
I'm impressed with the staff who are friendly, helpful and nice. For European standard I must say they are excellent. Knowing some basic words in Spanish will help, although they speak good english.
It is a perfect place if you want to go every where in Madrid as it is in Puerta de Sol area. Metro station is just 1 min walk, the hop on and off bus stop is just across the plaza, EL Corte Ingles Dept Store is just 1 min walk (just in case you need something), Gran Via is just 5 min walk, restaurants are everywhere. Mean while Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Cibeles, museums, and many landmarks are easy to reach. Perfect perfect place!
Many people yes, noises yes. But once you close the window, you won't hear anything. One down side: no parking nearby. And if you come with taxi you may have to walk with your luggage a bit. Once I saw taxi stopped by almost in front of the hotel though, don't know how to arrange that.

We were really happy with our stay here. (3 nights).
Every night the roller bladers, break dancers, hip hop and other entertainers performed.
We would throw money down from our balcony.
Make sure your room is facing the "square".
Staff are kind of friendly, asking for ice in the restaurant is not a popular thing to do.
Cool little stores 15 seconds away with drinks, snacks etc.
We ate in the Restaurant and the meal was very inexpensive and very good.
Rooms are very basic but no issues with them.
Close walk to La Gloria restaurant ---Go there!!
A really good area to stay in.

We are a family of five, spending a night in Madrid on a layover from Athens to Chicago. We wanted to give the kids a little taste of Madrid so we chose this hotel for it's location on Puerta Del Sol and it was perfect! We were able to walk around and be in the middle of the people, restaurants, stores as well as some attractions. The hotel was very comfortable, we got a room with 4 beds that were much larger than what we were used to in Europe, equivalent to a king size bed when 2 of them were put together. They also added a very nice crib for us for the baby and the room was still very comfortable. Bathroom was all marble and very clean and in general we found all the amenities we were used to as US travelers including free Wi-fi. The hotel restaurant was also great if you wanted to stay in as it was right on the square and you could people watch. FYI, we heard no noise from the square when the windows were closed. Tip for large families: cabs in Spain only allow 4 person max so we had to take 2 of them from the airport even though our 5th person was a baby that was €70 one way, ouch! Call the hotel a couple days in advance to arrange for a shuttle because they can't do it same day.

All of the positive reviews are true about the Hotel Europa. We stayed for 3 nights during a recent 3 week trip to Spain. We took the train from Barcelona to Madrid, then got a free metro pass on the inter-city train, got off on the first stop (Sol) and came up the steps right outside the hotel.

The restaurant outside was buzzing with activity and the Puerta del Sol (which the hotel overlooks) was full of people and entertainment. We thought it would be quite noisy, as our room overlooked the square on the 4th floor. We couldn't have picked a better room. We stood on our balcony and watched the very entertaining activity of the Sol both morning and evening. Upon closing the windows and drapes, it was as if we were in the quietest street in Madrid. The room is standard European. Bed was comfy, plenty of room in the bathroom, extremely clean.

There are numerous restaurants close by, the hop on-hop off tour bus is right across the square, and we even caught a flamenco ballet in the teatro right up the street. We sat in the restaurant several times for sangria in the afternoon and had tapas one night. Excellent. Both the front desk and restaurant staff are professional, yet friendly and very helpful. We liked it so much that we booked one more night later in our trip on our way to Pamplona. Highly recommend.
