“Comfortable, clean, cozy, and friendly!”
Reviewed 26 June 2012

This 2-star hostel felt like a 3-star hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. We were 2 mins from Atocha train station and close to pretty much everything. Probably one of the best 'hostels' I've stayed at. Highly recommend!

Stayed here two nights in July 2011. The room was very clean, the lady at the desk was helpful and was even able to check us in early. We were able to walk almost everywhere. The Atocha Train Station, the Prado, the Reina Sofia. Great place to stay at a great price! Highly reccommend.

I am a freelance international travelwriter traveling at my own expense who has traveled in over 60 countries on 6 continents. My 2 buddies & I recently stayed in the fantastic Hotel Barrera in Central Madrid, Spain for 3 nights. This was the finest Hostal (it's NOT a hostel) I have ever stayed in! The location is outstanding on Calle Atocha midway between the main train station and the Puerta del Sol situated in Barrio de las Letras. EVERYTHING was within walking distance to include the popular Plaza Santa Ana, Plaza Major, Pueta del Sol, the Prado, Reina Sofia, Barrio La Latina etc. You couldn't find a better central location in Madrid! The Hostal is spotless and was recently renovated and extremely economical for lodging in central Madrid. The owner is a very nice lady Nieves Mollo and I enjoyed meeting her. One of the nicest things (actually THE nicest thing about our stay) was the OUTSTANDING attention and service provided to us by their best employee Josefa Fernandez. She is a very intelligent woman with a bundle of invaluable information about anything to do with Madrid (tapas bars, bars, cafes, restaurants, teatros, tours etc)! She went above and beyond the call of duty. I'm sure Nieves is extremely happy to have a person such as Josefa in her employ. Although the room was a little small for 3 men, it worked out fine. It normally has 2 single beds but they provided us with a rollout for the 3 person. Our room was in the rear of the building, very quiet, with ensuite bathroom. I suggested to Nieves having a small kitchen for the guest's use would be nice but I don't believe she is looking to attract guests that would want a kitchen. Josefa was so kind as to store our bottles of wine in a small fridge in their laundry room. She actually joined me for just a small sip of our wine one early evening. Nieves would probably approve in the best interest of customer care! Josefa is the BEST!!! The hostal has free internet, wifi, washer/dryer and the small fridge. I would not hesitate to recommend Hostal Barrera to anyone, even those looking for a more expensive hotel! The price is right! Como no!?

I would like to warmly recommend the Hostal Barrera in Madrid.
With its great combination of a nice, very clean and newly decorated room with free Wi-Fi, helpful staff I think that it' s a good choice for a visit in Madrid. Good location near Atocha station, musem and metro.

I stayed 3 nights at the Hostal Barrera, Madrid, Spain. Feb 23, 24, 25, 2012. I selected this hotel based on reviews I read and it's location. It was a little more expensive than I wanted to spend, but was well worth it even though no breakfast is offered.

I took the airport bus to Atocha RR station. From there a 10 min. walk up Calle Atocha to the hostal on the left side.

You ring the bell at the ground floor and they buzz you in to the lobby. The hostal is one floor up. There is an antique, small elevator, but much faster to walk up. The staff meets you at the door of the hostal so you don't have to guess where the entrance is.

The staff is fluent in Spanish and English and probably other languages. Communication never a problem. The staff is very friendly and helpful and will give you a Madrid map and much advice.

The hostal is typical European small, but impeccable and very clean. The hostal appears to be recently renovated as everything is new and in excellent condition. I stayed in a single room in the back (#204), I requested a quiet room. Very little night noise from the street out my window. Daytime noise was the chattering of school children traversing the street twice a day, but this was very pleasent.

Typical very tiny bathroom and shower, but plenty of hot water, shampoo and body wash. The single bed was very comfortable and there was an extra pillow and blanket in the closet. The small tv had only 3 channels; CNN and BBC in English and TV5monde in French.

The lobby area has a laptop for anyone's use. The wifi was very fast and I never had to wait to use the laptop. Consequently I can't comment on whether the wifi worked in my room as I never used my laptop.

You return the room key when you leave. The front desk staff are very careful who they let in and out of the hostal. You had the feeling of very good security even if at times it feels a little overbearing. They go the extra mile to anticipate your every move and need, so when you turn to use the computer instead of heading for your room, you are told that you are going in the wrong direction and you have to explain what you are doing.

I selected this hotel for proximity to the art museums and RR station and was not dissappointed. 10 min. to the Prado and RR station, 5 min. to the Reina Sophia. Also, very close to the major tourist sites. 10 min. to Plaza Mayor, 15 min. to Purerta Del Sol and 20 min. to the Royal Palace area. The old Centro Madrid is so small that all tourist sites are easy walking distance. The EL Rastro flea market was 10 min. away, but dissappointing as it was mostly new stuff and some junk dealers. To be fair I was there in Feb. It is probably much bigger and more diverse in the warmer weather.

The staff seemed to be entirely women, which probably accounted for the attentiveness. The worst hotel staff I've had to deal with in Europe have all been men. The all female staff probably accounts for the extra security precautions as well.

This is an excellent hostal for single people travelling alone and worried about their security. Also, the condition of the hostal was new and impeccably clean. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They made you feel like that they really wanted your business and were delighted that you were staying with them.

My only wish would be that they make coffee available in the morning, but given the small size of the hostal, I doubt if it's possible. It's always a drag to have to get fully dressed and hit the streets to find one cup of coffee.

I tried the cafeteria one block down Atocha, but ran into difficulties as no English spoken, but the expresso was good.. I ended up getting morning caffe Americian at a Dunkin Donuts six blocks down Atocha (I say down, because Atocha is a long walk up a hill from the RR station to Plaza mayor and not for the faint of heart). Each cup of coffee is made individually when you order and actually tasted like real coffee, unlike the coffee offered by American Dunkin Donuts.

Make sure you visit the Reina Sophia 7pm - 9pm evenings (free admission). In the new building take the elevator to the obsevation deck on the roof, watch the sunset and the traffic, quite specatular.

I am digressing, so let me finish by saying that I can't fault the hotel for anything; Impeccably clean, new comfortable furnishings and extremely attentive and helpful staff. Great location and reasonable price given the going rate in Madrid. If you want to spend most of your time in the art museums, this is a great location.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room in the back. However, if you don't mind noise and want a view, ask for a ro...

Wonderful staff. Clean rooms and bath. Greta location near Atoch Station, Metro, museums and great restaurants. Trouble regulating heat and open window allowed main street noise. Quick Metro ride to Plaza Major which is full of restaurants.

The woman who checked us in for our one night stay was very pleasiant. Rooms are quite small and you have to negotiate around the furniture and anyone else staying in the room with you. We asked for a quiet room but received a room overlooking the main street. Noisy.
The recommendations of a location to eat and the restaurant were right on. The location is quite near the Atocha train station. But if you do not have exact directions you can get turned around as there are 5-6 streets converging at this location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room off of the street level.
