Recently stayed at the Confortel Alcala Norte (May) for two nights. Stayed there with my partner (both early 20’s). We had an excellent holiday.
Arrival: We got a taxi from the airport, which cost 24 euros (including a 5.50 supplement for travel from/to the airport), took about 10-15minutes. The taxi driver did not speak English, so we handed him our address written on a piece of paper which worked well.
Check in: We checked in quickly, the reception staff were very friendly and spoke English well.
Room/hotel: Excellent room (was non-smoking). Large bed. Very large balcony. Good sized bathroom (with bath/shower), shower was nice and powerful. Fridge in room, hotel provided free bottled water. Free safe in room. When we arrived the safe was shut, so we contacted reception and they said maintenance would come; they arrived very quickly (within a few minutes) and opened the safe for us straight away. Hairdryer in the bathroom. Toiletries were provided (soap, bath gel and shampoo). 4 glass cups in the room. However there was no kettle in the room (so take a travel kettle, mugs and spoons if you want tea or coffee). Room was very quiet.
We did not spend any time in the hotel apart from sleeping, but our impression of it was very good. It felt clean and safe, and staff seemed friendly and helpful. Did not try any food at the hotel so can’t comment on this.
Travel: We walked to the metro (Suanzes station), took just over 10 minutes. Was an easy walk and felt safe day and night. We got a 2 day tourist ticket for the metro, was 14.20euros. We brought it at Suanzes station at the desk, the woman did not speak any English at all and it was hard to communicate but got there in the end using a leaflet we picked up at the hotel about the tourist ticket. We looked at the self service machines afterwards and it looked like you could also buy the tourist tickets on there (which may be easier if you want to avoid speaking at the desk/if its closed). The tourist ticket gives you unlimited use of metro and buses. Took about 25 minutes to get to the centre of town (Opera). We left the centre one night at 1.30am and got the metro back, felt safe walking back at that time. Trains seem to run every 8-10 minutes.
Travel back to airport: We asked at the hotel reception the morning before we were due to check out if we could book a taxi to the airport. They wrote down our room number and what time we wanted the taxi. Went down in the morning, and the taxi was there waiting for us (it was early). Excellent service by the hotel. The taxi to the airport cost 23euros (including the airport supplement) and dropped us right outside the terminal.
Overall: We had an excellent holiday, and thought the hotel was excellent. The hotel is obviously not in the centre of Madrid, but had excellent connections via the Metro (or taxi if you prefer) and did not take long at all to get to the centre of town. Was good value for money (much cheaper than a hotel in the centre would have been). Madrid itself was lovely, lots of things to do/places to see. Food in the centre was cheap, could get tapas cheaply. Also in the restaurants we went to the set day menu’s were 8.50-10euros and included a starter, main and a drink (wine/beer/soft drink) with good sized portions.
Would recommend Madrid and this hotel for a short city break.
