“Sleep? You'll be lucky”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 December 2013 via mobile

If there is one overriding factor, above all else, that determines whether a hotel is worth it's weight... It's the quality of sleep. At this hotel I didn't sleep. Dragging tables, chairs, other items of furniture over solid floors at 4am is unfair and unfriendly, especially when it's the staff who are doing it. The whole place reminded me of my granma's obsession with kipper tails and long draping curtains, stripy wallpaper and patterned deep-pile carpet. And front-of-house areas are reminiscent of a hunting lodge, complete with old, stuffy, fur coat wearing clientele. During our stay, there was a FNFF function going on downstairs (search for it). Overall, really really bad. The Christmas tree, however, was nice.

This is a place where you are likely to bump into celebrities, politicians and stars even if you stop by for a great haircut or your favorite drink. The property itself needs maintenance as it is an old building but the wonderful staff more than makes up for that. The Reception people, the bar staff, waiters et al are just the best in the business, no question about it. The prices are very reasonable for both, off season and high season. Upper management is always available to discuss the traveler's concerns. The only thing they need to improve to get my five stars is the kitchen staff. Again the waiters and Maitres are superb but the cooks need to do a better job. Stop by for a dring and some appetizers at "El bar del Velazquez" and will go back many times. Oh, now they have great wi-fi which is free for the time being.

Room Tip: Call the Reception desk yourself. Ask for what is available, on line or travle agencies are not so g...

We broke up our trip from Germany to Andalucia with a 2-day stay in Madrid. We tried this hotel for the first time and were really impressed. The staff were really friendly to us and even let our daughter play the piano! (unthinkable in Germany). We had a triple room which was really quiet as it faced the inner courtyard and we had a TV in each room (our daughter loved that ;-). Bearing in mind that a breakfast buffet was included in the price of our triple room, I think it was good value for money (209 Euros/2 nights) and the hotel is located in an upmarket neighbourhood of Madrid, with good connections to Retiro park and other sights. We can certainly recommend this hotel and plan to stay there again next time we go to Madrid. All in all a pleasant family experience.

Room Tip: I should emphasize that this is NOT a family hotel with swimming pool, kiddies room, etc, but the st...

We spent a few nights at the Wellington Hotel in Madrid beginning of July and thought we might try the Gran Velazquez on the same street on our way back through Madrid end of July. Big mistake.
The 2 rooms I had reserved in this supposed 4 star hotel in the elegant Salamanca district were the shabbiest I have seen anywhere in the world. The breakfast buffet was not better. 4 stars my eye! To be avoided.

Rooms are great, clean and tidy. Lifts are one flight up but hey get a life the concierge helps overcome that obstacle. Reception staff greet you with a smile which lasted the whole time I was there. The first of three nights, room service was great. Second morning I did not receive room service breakfast. Found the order hanging from the door where I left it 20 hours before. I ordered room service three hours early and had to do a follow up. When it eventually arrived, I was gifted with a fruit platter with bruised and rotten fruit. Had to also follow up with food bar which was not restocked fully the whole time I was there.

All in all not a place I would return to in a hurry.

Room Tip: If you only speak English, place orders through reception. They at least know what they are doing

Stayed here for a business meeting in June 2013. Very nice hotel...lovely rooms...clean and quiet. Nicely located near Retiro park, and the Castlelano area is classy. Good/expensive shopping, and restaurants. The elevator is located up a flight of stairs, which is inconvenient with luggage. Also, there are single steps up/down in the hotel which are easy to miss.

I have read some damning reviews but I cannot agree. There are a couple of obvious problems,
however. First, the elevator begins one flight up, up a narrow staircase, so you must be in good shape or have some help dragging bags up to the elevator. Second, it looks like there are few rooms with outside views, and these cost a good deal more. However, the outside room was a suite, with a balcony over a beautiful street, and it was beautifully appointed--and not that expensive in worldwide perspective--especially for a major world city.
The inside room had one window that opened on an air shaft--facing other such rooms--but it was clean and well-furnished. This room was very reasonable by world standards. You get what you pay for--sometimes.

The location is excellent: a high-class street and easy to get to museums and plazas at center if you can walk.

The staff people were very very helpful (mostly) and patient and if some travelers encountered problems with one or another members of the staff it would be wrong to generalize this to others. Finally, they have a nice restaurant and small bar/lounge. This is a very good hotel.

Room Tip: Pay more and get an outside suite. Pay less and get a quiet and clean adequate room.
