“El Pardo palce, well worth the trip”
Reviewed 31 May 2013

Visited the El Pardo palace which is a short journey out of Madrid centre. The palace is situated in the lovely town of El Pardo which is about 20 mins bus journey from Madrid. The palace can only be viewed with a guide. The English guide is at 12 noon.
We were taken through the various rooms with our guide. who spoke very good English and told us all about the history of the palace and the various rooms. The palace is very well kept and has very brilliantly decorated ceilings and tapestries. The tour seemed very personal and you get to see not just the grand rooms but personal things such as bathrooms etc which you don't normally get to see in a palace visit. It was very quiet when we visited the palace and I tend to think this palace is a bit of a forgotten gem. Well worth a visit for history lovers.

“Wow Madrids Royality lived in Style!”
Reviewed 19 May 2013

While in Madrid I took the time to tour the Royal Palace and it was fantastic. Everything was beautiful!. I is hard to imagine what it took to build this palace. I just wanted to lay down on the floor in most rooms and stare at the ceilings for a while the art was amazing. While 10 Euros seemed like a lot for a self guided tour I understand that it must be really expensive to maintain such a grand facility. Don't miss this stop on your way through Madrid.

One of the best Palaces that I have visited besides staying at my palace in Lisbon, The Pestana Palace. All the rooms are amazing, it is an education. For 4 euros pick up your own walking tour, it is easy to use own your own. I went on a Monday about 11:00 am so there were no lines plus it was the first week of May. I would call ahead to find out if they are open because on state visits it is closed to the public. After and before the tour there are restrooms, lockers, and a big gift shop with fair prices. I was there for almost three hours. It is a great place to take the kids if they can put down their ifons and ipods. If the weather is bad this is the place to visit but one bad thing , NO PICTURES AT ALL.

“An historic treasure, spectacular armory”
Reviewed 20 April 2013

A self-guided tour of the royal palace is one of the top attractions in Madrid. It is the royal residence, although the royal family lives on the outskirts of town. The palace rooms are breathtaking, for both their beauty and for the obscene amassing of wealth (though nothing nearly so appalling as in Vatican City). Never before have I been in a room that had the sole purpose of being between two other rooms.

There are plenty of rooms in the palace that are off limits--those are the rooms I really would like to have seen. (There are more than 3000 rooms.) Still those that are open are amazing. Be prepared to visit the palace with hundreds of other tourists. You can go at your own pace, but there may be a wait to see some of the rooms.

A real treasure is the armory, accessible in the southwest corner of the palace grounds. It is thought by many to be one of the best collections in the world. Honestly, unless you are a scholar, you probably will be overwhelmed by the end. Again, here you can take your time (or not). We ended up spending more time here than in the main rooms.
