Owner description: Unique tours about the Spanish civil war in and around Madrid. Following the steps of four famous authors and artists associated with the International Brigades – Ernest Hemingway, Gerda Taro, Charlie Connolly and John Cornford – our day trips leave the usual tourist trail far behind and enter the fascinating world of the war which shaped modern European history.

Great tour of the sites and stories of the Spanish Civil War in and around Madrid.
David answered all of my questions and even spent extra time at the end giving more in depth information.

I along with a group of six others had the pleasure of taking part in one of Justin Byrne's guided civil war tours in Madrid recently. As our group were mainly novices as far as the civil war is concerned and did not have the time for any major excursions we settled upon a walking tour of central Madrid. While there are very few visible traces of the civil war left in central Madrid (let alone monuments or museums) Dr Byrne really did manage to bring the conflict to life and explain it a both thorough and fascinating manner. The walking tour took about three hours in total (at a leisurely pace including a stop for coffee) and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Madrid with an interest in the civil war, no whether you have a general or a specialist interest in the war.

This one day trip really brought home what the full horrors of the Spanish civil war were like. The rough terrain, exposed hillsides, the extremes of temperature (there was a bitingly cold wind when we went), the difficulty of getting provisions, equipment and ammunition plus all the other privations can be really understood only by personally visiting such sites. David Mathieson proved to be a most insightful guide, capable of dealing with the wider issues of the war and the fascinating personal stories he has unearthed. A&MW

Dr Mathieson's deep knowledge, and his rivetting story-telling skills, brought the Spanish Civil War to life in amazing detail. Without a doubt, this is one of the most fascinating day trips you can take on a visit to Madrid. It is also a unique experience, given that Spanish authorities have done their utmost to obliterate the memory of the Spanish Civil War (no museums, no historic plates marking famous sites...).
Dr Mathieson took us on a walking tour of the Jarama valley - the scene of one of the most important battles of the civil war. We stood in the courtyard of an old travel inn, where British International Brigade volunteers were billited, and imagined their ascent to "Suicide Hill", lugging First World War issue machine guns and the wrong ammunition for it - a mistake that was to cost the British hundreds of lives in the first day of fighting.
These poignant details, which Dr Mathieson's draws from soldiers' memoirs and historical accounts, brought to life the chaos and terror and suffering of war - but also its achievements. Thanks to the International Brigades, the Nationalist advance on Madrid was halted for several months.

This trip really brought to life the history of the Spanish Civil war. As a history buff, I am familiar with other tours, but rarely has one opened such a new world to me. David was able to furnish us with information that was completely new to all of us, even though one is a Spanish Civil war buff and two of us live in Madrid. The visit to the Jarama valley was amazing as, not only is it a spectacular place, but still very similar to when the events described by David occurred. You can really picture things happening as he talks.
This is a trip that will engage you and teach you. It is truly worth taking advantage of!
