“A Perfect Hotel for Our First Trip to Madrid”
Reviewed 31 July 2010

A boutique style hotel in the centre of Madrid, Hotel de las Letras, is really worth a visit. My search for a hotel in Madrid was quite extensive as we had never visited before. I had no personal recommendations and the review sites were all inconclusive. In the end it was a travel feature on Madrid in The Guardian, which tipped the balance. And I’m glad it did. The hotel is not much to look at from the outside, but once inside the carefully restored building has touches of both old and new. In the wrong hands this can be a disaster, and I know that a few reviewers did not like this aspect of the hotel, but I felt that the ambience was just about right.

My family had two rooms, a superior, and a standard. Both were well furnished with comfortable beds and plenty of toiletries etc. It is worth paying the extra for the superior as they have a balcony and private hot tub. This was well used as it is an ideal way to wind down, and cool down, after a long day’s sightseeing. The mini-bar is well stocked and not too expensive, so a cold one in the hot tub was a very welcome distraction. As was the very trendy roof-top bar. Here we drank one of the best mojitos ever and watched the sun set over Madrid.

The hotel is clean, the staff are efficient and courteous, and the location is very central. A perfect hotel for any sort of visit to Madrid. Highly recommended.

Stayed for 4 nights and the hotel is a solid 3 stars. Rooms are clean and efficient but dark. The hotel lobby is small and the staff is professional. Location is on the border of the good and mediocre part of Madrid. If you walk one way you end up walking towards the nicer parts of Madrid. Walk the other way and you are greeted by prostitutes. If you have a room facing the street, the noise can be a bit much.
Would recommend staying there if you are paying less than 100 Euros a night. Anything more, you can find better places.

This hotel is in a great location, the rooms are clean, spacious and minimalist in style. The staff were very pleasant, polite knowledgeable and welcoming. The bar is good and serves a selection of decent drinks and offers good food and were acceptably priced. The hotel was spotlessly clean throughout our 4 day stay.

That's the good, the less so good includes cheap toiletries in the bathroom that weren't refilled/replaced during our stay, a dodgy shower, one towel each, bedding not changed over 3 nights and the hotel kept a block on our debit card for more than a week after returning that caused no end of problems once we returned home.

All in all, a nice spot, a stylish hotel but it's not the cheapest and isn't quite as impressive in the flesh. A city-break in 35+ degree heat without a pool isn't ideal. had we known the pool AND outdoor rooftop balcony bar areas weren't open we'd have stayed elsewhere.

I stayed here for two nights for work last month and liked the hotel. The rooms were pretty big by European standards and the bathroom was ginormous. My colleagues explained that this part of the town used to be quite bad so perhaps de las Letras is able to offer such attractive prices and big rooms based on it being a low-rent (but gentrifying) area. The big seller here for me was the free wifi. I am so sick of paying for wifi when I travel. Bummed that breakfast wasn't included.

I remember thinking that the beds were a bit futon like, and the sheets weren't the best. Reception was very friendly and loaned me a UK=>EU plug adaptor when I needed one. Didn't get a chance to check out the bar sadly.

All in all, a good stay. I liked it better than Preciados, which is very highly ranked on TA, but which I found to be quite average.

After reading reviews from Tripadvisor, we booked this hotel for three nights. My husband and I are in our 50s and we like comfort when traveling. I am very picky with hotels. This hotel did not disappoint us. The hotel staff was very helpful in guiding us to places. The location is excellent and although it is located on the main street it has good sound proof. The room was spacious, with comfortable beds and pillows. The bathroom was also great and roomy to put all your toiletries. It was clean with laminated floors (I hate carpet) which made it seem cleaner, it always smelled good upon entering the room. The light was adequate, you don't need a flashlight... The room had a balcony with views of the beautiful old buildings of Madrid. We walked from the hotel to the museums and to the centro and the Corte Ingles. We did not eat at the hotel. We discovered a nice place for breakfast on our last day, right across from the hotel, called Vitamina. We thought this was a vitamin place, but it was not. We also ate at a great restaurant a couple of doors down the Vitamina. It was asian/mediteranean. Since I have to watch what I eat due to a sensitive stomach, I ate there twice with no problems. They had excellent smoothies with fresh fruits. I would stay at this hotel again.

We have just got back from a weekend stay at De Las Letras and I must say that it was an excellent experience apart from the fact that the spa and gym were closed for renovation. The staff were helpful and pleasant, the room (we got an upgrade) was lovely, with a great massive bed and luxiriant bath, flat screen tv (only News Channels in English) and the hotel had a nice bar and roof terrace. It is positioned on Gran Via in the tourist centre of Madrid a walk from Chueca, Sol, Retiro, all three main Museums and great shops.
We would definitely stay here again if we go back to Madrid and hopefully the Spa will be open.
