“Great Location, Pleasant Staff”
Reviewed 11 January 2014

My family & I stayed at this hotel in December 2013 & had 2 separate rooms. Both rooms were nice & clean, although several pieces of the furniture were quite "tired" looking, with obvious nicks & scratches. The bathrooms were very good. If you are looking for atmosphere, go elsewhere; the hotel is so quiet that we wondered if there were any other guests! However, the staff, especially Raquel at the front desk, were wonderful and very helpful.

The hotel location is ideal, directly across the street from Retiro Park and walking distance to the Prado, numerous restaurants and even Plaza del Sol, although the latter was an ambitious walk. The neighborhood was also quite safe, even at night.

We are just returned from a trip to Spain and Portugal, having stayed at the Palacio del Retiro twice during our visit (both times had the same room).
This is a boutique hotel in a former palace--the public rooms reflect the grand style of the original building; guest rooms are quite modern and in the main comfortable. The staff was very helpful, including making good reservations for restaurants during tough time to book over the Ephiphany holiday. There is a downstairs bar and restaurant, both of which we found pleasant and with better than average food quality.
The location of the hotel is terrific--particularly for art lovers; as it is a close walk to both the Prado and the Thyseen Bournimisza, as well as the Modern Art museum that houses Guernica. It is close to a main railway station (Atocha), which was convenient for picking up and returning our rental car, and for a day trip to Cuenca by rail.
The hotel does need a bit of TLC/maintenance in a few spots--notably the carpets in hallways. In our room the safe had been damaged between our original and second visit, and the plaster in the ceiling above the shower also needed some work.
One thing we found tough in almost every hotel of our trip was dim lighting and overheated rooms. This hotel did have a bit better than typical lighting, but it was tough to adjust the thermostat down. Overall, I would pick this hotel again--particularly as it is part of Marriott and therefore can use points.

Lovely small hotel. The staff was so attentive to us. Comfortable room - although we face the wall, it was painted with Magritte figures to entertain our view. They offered to change our room to a park view the next day but when you've unpacked........Large bathroom, great towels, amazing shower head. As platinum Marriott members, we had complimentary continental breakfast every day. Amazing coffee. It is located across the street from the Retiro and two blocks from the Puerto de Alcala/Independence Plaza. The Prado is a few walkable blocks away as is the Calle Alcala leading to the Plaza del Sol and Plaza Mayor. Can't recommend it enough.

Stayed in September 2013. Amazing experience.

I have three main drivers for a hotel. Room, staff, location.

Room: Upgraded from the base room. Well worth the money. Room was large, bed was extremely comfortable, sheets were exactly how I like them. I slept really well. No noise from the street. The bathroom was large. Loved the room.

The Hotel common areas: I usually don't review the common areas since they aren't particularly distinctive but this hotel deserves it. First the lounge, where they serve breakfast, is a great place to just take it easy and relax. I'd have tea or a whiskey here and just read the news, catch up on email or read a book. Staff stopped by every so often to make sure I had everything I needed. Loved it. Spent time here almost every day. The bar was equally comfortable, thought I didn't find as relaxing. Not a bad thing. The loung was a place where I could sit by myself and relax after exploring. The bar was really nice, staff still very attentive, mellow and relaxed.

Staff: Extremely attentive but not overbearing. It's a small hotel and they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. Also had great advice on places to go and things to do.

Location: Central. Took the train from the airport to the hotel. (I love public transportation.) Closest stop was a block away. Took a cab to the airport form the hotel. Both were easy and fast.

The hotel is right across from one of the city's main parks. I spent a little time in the park each day, often having tea here first thing in the morning. It's a great place to be in the afternoon. People come out and workout, families play, people walk. Great for people watching or just to enjoy.

The hotel is about a block from the Prado and the Thyssen. Both AMAZING. It's also an easy walk to the old part of the city, the designer shopping area, and the gay district. The palace on the other side of the old part of the city is only a brisk 20 minute walk away. Amazing food is everywhere and the staff is happy to help.

Booking my next trip to southern Spain and my return to Madrid next Christmas. Will be staying here. Can't wait.

Had a great stay at this hotel recently. It is located in a quiet area of Madrid across from Retiro Park and near the stock exchange, so it caters to business travelers. It is walking distance or a short metro ride to most major Madrid sights. It is very charming and located in a former mansion wiht a spiral staircase in the center. Rooms are very clean, modern and include Roy Lichtenstein inspired art on the glass wall which separates the bathroom. It is somewhat pricey though.

Absolutely a lovely hotel – from the minute we entered the building we were treated special. The reception staff were all very helpful, with all our questions about both Madrid transport, sights and hotel specific questions.
The room was very well decorated and clean with all modern items – excellent shower and a very big bath tub.
The bed was the best 1st night sleep I have ever had (I travel worldwide extensively & new bed first night is always difficult) and we had two lovely rooms next to each other both overlooking the park.
Its location was also very good with the “Retiro” Metro station approx 400yds away which enables easy access into the metro system and the lovely park straight across the street.
Only had the continental breakfast (complimentary when platinum member) which was very nice – breakfast staff were polite and attentive.
Top tip if you expect to travel around the city to visit the sights etc. is to buy a 3 day pass (18 euro) for the metro/trains/bus at the airport on arrival which allows you to then travel into Madrid and return plus all your time in the city (we definitely got our moneys worth).
We had a lovely weekend stay here and would most definitely return.

Room Tip: Try and get view overlooking the park
