“Disappointed”
Reviewed 5 November 2010

This was our first visit to Madrid, and we had high hopes for this hotel based on other reviews and the exterior appearance. The location is great (across from the Parque del Retiro), and the front desk staff was nice enough, taking the time to explain that our choice of a king bed was unavailable, so they had upgraded us to a larger room. The room was large, but with 2 beds pushed together, not exactly what we were looking for during a romantic stay. I guess I didn't read the reviews closely enough, because I wasn't expecting IKEA furnishings.

On our first morning we opted for breakfast at the hotel. The only option was the buffet, and the price was 29 euros ($41) per person! And this wasn't Sunday brunch with champagne!! When we told our waitress that we would just have coffee and juice, we were informed that this would be 12 euros ($17) per person! Ouch!!! Clearly this was the wrong hotel for us.

We left Madrid that day and, upon our return 2 days later, relocated to a lovely hotel on the Gran Via where we found our king size bed to be very comfortable and our breakfast to be very affordable.

Charming hotel located across from the Retiro Park. Spacious room, great closet space, wonderful bathroom. Beautifully modernized building. Nice, relaxing restaurant. Wish we had more time to spend in Madrid and at this hotel.

Just got back from 10 days in Spain and stayed at the AC Palacio because of its high ranking on TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed. Fantastic location near the museums, shopping and restaurants. The room was large and lovely, with high ceilings, roomy bathroom and free mini-bar. Would recommend this hotel and will definitely stay here next time I am in Madrid.

By the time we got to this hotel we had already stayed in 4 other hotels for our trip and this one was by far the most beautiful, well located, and friendly hotel. The front desk person was very helpful with making reservations for us to see a show, get dinner, and telling us were to go out. He even checked us in for our flight home from his work computer because they didn't have a business center! I recommend the chain as well as this particular location and plan on using them again!

This is an excellent, quiet hotel located opposite the Retiro Park which I can recommend for those seriously interested in visiting the three main museums, all within leisurely walking distance. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the Puerta de Alcala, where you can enjoy breakfast in a sidewalk cafe while watching the morning traffic go by. The Retiro metro station is 15 minutes away, a bit of a slog with shopping bags! The hotel staff are welcoming and very friendly and the "superior" rooms extremely comfortable. If you fancy eating well late at night "La Gamarra" restaurant is a couple of streets away. Ask reception to make a reservation.

We stayed in a superior room facing the park for 5 nights recently. The room was spacious and clean. The high ceilings and hardwood floors made us feel like we were staying in a nice studio apartment instead of a hotel. It was a 15-20 minute walk to puerto del sol and about 5-10 min walk to the prado. The area was safe at night and very quiet. We walked home every night after midnight with no problems. It is about a 5 minute walk from a metro stop so using the metro was so easy.

I am rating it 4 star instead of 5 stars only because of one problem we had at the hotel. We were not able to use the free wifi in our room with our mac/apple computers/phones. We were able to connect downstairs in the bar and the study room, which uses a different wifi system, but not in our room. They were very nice about it and tried to fix it but they were not able to. The hotel also told us that it was a common problem with mac/apple users. we were not able to get it to work the whole 5 days that we were there, which was a disappointment. Had the internet worked for us, this hotel would have been perfect.

Still highly recommend this hotel, especially if you don't need wifi in the room or don't have a mac computer.

The Palacio del Retiro is a hip boutique hotel with a highly attentive staff. Their rooms range from modest (on the higher floors) to luxurious (the suites on the third floor.) The hotel is very conveniently located, within walking distance to t the major museums, many restaurants and shopping. Three stays here in the past year year have all been extremely pleasant. Proximity to the park offers a welcome respite from the city hustle and bustle.
