I didn't expect much based on their website, but I was very happy with my stay here. The staff was very accommodating. The rooms are good sized and very well appointed. The hotel has a fairly modern decor that works well. Overall, the hotel was a good value and would recommend it.

I'll admit it -- my family can be a little high maintenance under most circumstances. We all have different dietary requirements. We keep different hours. My father can be rather hard of hearing. We don't speak Spanish. This alone would be enough to rattle the reception desk a bit, but you wouldn't know it for the ease and friendliness with which they made hotel reservations, ordered taxis, aided with online flight check-in, etc. However, when my parents' luggage failed to make a connection to Madrid and went missing, the hotel staff stepped in. While we were out seeing the Prado, they were calling the airline. While we were visiting the Plaza Mayor, they were calling the airline. While we were enjoying a heart-stopping flamenco show, they were on the phone with the airline. And when we returned from Toledo to the news that our luggage had arrived, the staff couldn't *wait* to tell us, and seemed almost giddy for the victory.

We stayed in two standard rooms; however, before my parents arrived, the housekeeping discovered that the (non-smoking) room to which they had been assigned smelled of cigarette smoke, and upgraded them to a larger room.

The mini-bar is complimentary, which is a plus, and the rooms were very modern and beautiful. Design is clearly a priority.

The location is convenient to the Retiro (obviously), the Alcala Gate, the Prado and the other museums, and a fairly short walk to the Puerta del Sol, with a slightly longer walk to the Plaza Mayor.

We had originally booked reservations at the Ritz, but there was a problem with the reservation with our travel company, and we re-booked here. While the Ritz certainly looks nice, I think we probably fared better for the mix-up.

In December 2010, we traveled to Spain to visit our daughter who is spending an academic year in Madrid. We spent a week in Madrid (two different hotels) and a few days in both Paris and Barcelona. We stayed here at the very end of our trip for three nights, including New Year's Eve. The hotel is in a beautiful old building across from Retiro Park. The neighborhood is quiet and upscale, in a convenient location. We walked everywhere and had breakfast and dinner in local restaurants. The rooms themselves were gorgeous and had all the luxury amenities. Service was excellent and quietly executed. There is absolutely nothing to complain about the AC Palacio del Retiro and only good things to say. We chose this hotel for New Year's Eve specifically because it is located away from the plazas where noisy crowds would be bringing in the New Year and partying in the streets all night long. If you want a quiet home base in Madrid to escape to, this hotel is the perfect place. But if you want to walk out in the morning to a vibrant street scene with cafes, tapas bars, cervecerias, narrow cobble stone streets, street vendors, etc., I would choose another location such as near Plaza Santa Ana. You may give up a little peace and quiet at night but you will gain a more interesting local experience.

Very nice hotel just in the centre of Madrid, providing really good quality of service. The staff is always nice and superhelpful and the prices are alright. I also liked the interior design of my room, which was classical in general but with a cool partition wall with a comics drawn on it.
Very, very nice.

The service is out of this world. The best treatment we had in Spain. The most comfortable sleep as well.

This charming, tranquil unimposing hotel is a wonderful example of quiet luxury. It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. This is one of Madrid's priciest options, but you won't be disappointed. We had a Jr. suite, but all the roooms are spacious. Our room had a large shower and no tub so if that is a concern specify that you want a tub. We had two vessel sinks. The room looked like a modern NYC loft and was more Design Within Reach than Ikea. It has thick bountiful towels, robes, and a heated towel rack. They give you generous supplies of Acqua de Parma personal products so if you forget or run out of your shampoo, body gel, conditioner or body lotion, you are in luck. One of my favorite characteristics is that the staff is unobtrusive in providing excellent services. Our room came stocked with a mini fridge and the goodies were free. I have only two suggestions. In an attempt to provide atmoshperic lighting, there simply is not enough of it. They need brighter bulbs in the bathroom and desk area. The rooms on the inner courtyard can be dark. Request a room facing the park to solve this issue. There should be a mirror and good lighting over the desk. Like many women I prefer putting my makeup on seated at a dressing table. I always bring my own travel magnifying mirror, but a larger wall mirror is helpful and good lighting is a neccesity. This is an easily corrected fault. Still this is a male dominated culture, and women's needs are not in the foreground. The buffet breakfast is expensive but yummy. It is top quality. There are generous portions of their Iberian ham, Spanish cheese, a home blended yogurt, pastries and breads. Hot items like cooked sausage and egg dishes may be ordered and are included. They also serve smoked salmon but alas there are no bagels. We saw bagels elsewhere in Madrid and see no reason why they could not be on the menu here. Still this is the kind of hotel that would try to meet any need the guest expresses. Madrid like all of Europe is expensive for Americans, but this hotel is in line with other prices. If you are thinking of staying at the Ritz , but want to avoid the stuffines, you will get the same over the top service here. This hotel is not walking distance to the Prado or the Queen Sofia. It is close to the high end shopping streets. Everything is so expensive here that one can buy the items for the same price or less back home. All I bought was a scarf that I wanted at one of the big name stores from Paris. I bought some $100 leather shoes and $35 rubber rain boots that had a fashionable treatment at the top. We purchased an art book at the Prado that we couldn't get elsewhere. This is not a shopping destination. It is an art destination. In order to enjoy ourselves we had to ignore the prices on the menus or we would have driven ourselves crazy. Any decent and even not so decent resaurant is expensive here. Food has gotten better in Spain over the years. Here in Madrid when we tire of Spanish ,we eat italian or something else.
