“Was Mugged in the Lobby of the building.”
Reviewed 14 October 2007

Be warned this property is not safe. I was mugged by 3 individuals entering the building 2 weeks ago. They do not have any security cameras out front or in the lobby. When the person on duty finally came down after I screamed he would not call the police or allow me to use a phone to call home. I was knocked unconcious by a choke hold and in addition to calling the police they should have called a doctor to see me. For all I know he was in on the assault. I was buzzing the doorbell for longer than I should have and the assailant came in behind me. For the lack of safety, security and human decency I do not recommend this property to anyone.

I stayed there (be careful, Hostal Martin and Hostal Cervelo have both the same reception) with my friend during a weekend trip and I was pleasantly surprised, the rooms were clean (and everything got cleaned and tidied up on a daily basis) and the shower pressure was great for a hostal. The receptionist had some troubles understanding my Spanish but otherwise they were really friendly. You can even use the Internet for free in the lobby and there is an elevator (useful when you have some heavy luggage, and normally there is no elevator in a hostal) We had a room facing the courtyard so no streetnoise at all, but there was occasionally some noise from the stairwell of the next building. The bakery just next to the hostal was great, fresh orange juice and all kinds of bakeries for a reasonable price. The metro is nearby, but you can even walk to the mayor attractions (Plaza Mayor, etc.) we used the metro only once. We paid 53 Euros for the room for the night, so we saved a lot of money to go shopping... I would absolutely recommend this hostal.

Entrance was not very appealing, but the hostel itself was quite nice given the price. Rooms were very clean and quiet and the water pressure was great. The bakery next door, called Peter Pan, was outstanding. Hostel is about 1 block from nearest metro station. Staff was friendly and helpful. Location was central for sightseeing. Free internet access through a PC located in the lobby. Very good value for Madrid.

We booked at the Hostal Martin but ended up staying at one of their sister sites just up C/Atocha on Luis Velez. Stayed 4 nights.

Very clean, comfortable, ensuite rooms, with balcony over the main street.

TV, air con, great bathrooms: the rooms look like they've been recently renovated and were priced 46 euro per night, which is a great price for such a central location.

The Luis Velez hostal is a 2 minute walk to Plaza Santa Ana (lots of cafes and tapas bars) and handy for the subway (again a bargain at 1 euro to travel from the airport into the city centre).

I am not a princess, but I do expect cleanliness and a friendly staff. Finding the hostal building was easy, a few blocks from the metro but the office situation was a bit of a mess. The hostal shares an office with another hostal and the staff was not all that friendly, although they spoke English a little. I requested a quiet room and after wandering through a maze reached a smelly room with dirty towels. After requesting new towels, I realized that all their towels were gross. I got used to the smokey smell in the room but not to the bug that crawled across the floor. Also, they only take cash. Location was fine, but I would not stay here again.

I spent 5 nights in this spotlessly clean hostal slap bang in the middle of Madrid, near all the main sights. For a simple but comfortable en suite single room it was very good value at about E40 per night (no breakfast, but who cares!). The building with it's old wooden staircase has a bit of character, there's free internet access in the reception area and the staff were friendly and helpful. The only fault I could give it was it was a bit noisey at times, but I still slept well every night.
