“A comfortable hostal in an ideal position.”
Reviewed 11 July 2009

When we arrived we booked in and then we were walked to another building in a street off Atocha. The building was very quiet, and our room clean and adequate. It took us some time to work out the lift system! It wasn't till we went to check out that we discovered there was a kitchen and internet.
The position of the hostal was ideal. We were in walking distance to the museums and lots of bars.

We stayed 2 nights and were very comfortable. The room was very clean and large enough for the 3 of us ( triple room). The bathroom was tiled nicely and was clean - towels were changed every day and hot water was always available. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was quite a lot of noise in the night and early morning due to door slamming ( other guests I suppose) and the water heater pumping the water. We had a room overlooking a courtyard and someone kept slamming the entrance door which created a loud echo. Breakfast was not provided but there is a very nice bar just outside that serves breakfast combinations for a very low price. Across the road there was a tapas bar that served excellent food and was typically decorated. All in all I would stay there again.

We (3 adults) stayed one night at the Hostal Martin/Cervelo (dfferent floors, same management). The place was incredibly convenient, walking distance from Plaza del Sol, Plaza Major, The Prado, and the Renfe-Atocha train station. Close to subway too.

The room and bath were clean and quiet. Hotel staff was very helpful and most spoke English. Simple lounge area with computer station and wireless internet in the room. Definitely a good budget choice.

Going back to look at reviews again before writing this, I saw some that would have deterred me from staying at Hostal Martin (somehow I didn't see those before our trip). My initial impressions of Hostal Martin during booking were very good. They were extremely responsive on email and we had several communications before our departure. We chose the hostal as a quick overnight prior to our early morning departure from Madrid. It is well-located for trains, Metro and major museums. I highly recommend the restaurants on Plaza de Santa Ana (especially Lateral) around the corner from Hostal Martin.

The hotel staff accommodated my request for a room with especially good air conditioning since it was very hot the day we arrived. The room was down a long maze of hallways, was very basic, but clean and served our purpose for the short time we were there. I just read another review about a safety issue in the lobby. I thought about that myself while coming and going, but we did not experience any problems.

The staff also arranged for a very early airport shuttle, which was reliable and prompt.

I would stay here again based on the service we received from the staff. I wouldn't stay more than one night, but it met our needs for a low cost option.

After spending a lovely week in a quiet apartment unit on a tree-lined street in Madrid, we (a family of three) went to the coastal areas. Our return flight to our home detination was from Madrid, very early in the morning. So, before leaving Madrid, attracted by its central location, we went to Hostal Martin -- to get a basic room for the one night we would have to return to Madrid to catch our international flight. They could not show us the triple room because it was occupied but assured us that we would have a nice, quiet triple. We prepaid for the room, just to make sure we lock it in. We returned to Madrid late, the night before the flight. Hostal Martin said the room was not ready -- it was well past 8 PM. We went out for dinner and came back. Instead of the room promised, they herded us into a room that was being renovated, reeking with paint and varnish smell, with painter's tape still all over. We protested, they said tough luck. We had just a few hours before the flight, so we just huddled up and ... tried.. to sleep in that smelly, cramped room. We sent email complaint later, hoping the Hostal would at least send an apology. Nothing. The staff was cold, unhelpful and the property... a hell hole for one night. Avoid this rat trap, despite its central location!

probably the worst hostel I've been to during the last year. The room was dark, grimy and with gargling water pipes as background tracking. The 'ensuite' bathroom may sound grand until you've been there that is. There was an underlying odour that was impossible to shake off and is still in my nostrils writing this review so I think I'll just leave off here. Oh by the way we left right the next morning although we had booked a couple of nights and found a place round the corner at the same price but much better. Good luck.

Generally fair value for €57 for smallish, plain but very clean and recently refurbished double room. Great location - close to metro, many attractions, restaurants and a very good breakfast cafe about 5 doors down Calle Atocha. We were able to switch after one night from an extremely tiny double room in Hostal Cervelo (same operators, on 1st floor where reception is) to something a bit more spacious on the same floor (i.e. we never did stay in Hostal Martin itself), else our rating would have been 1-2 points lower. After reading other reviews, we took care to request a quieter room away from Atocha when we booked so noise wasn't an issue. Staff are friendly and helpful and the lift would be a plus for older travellers with heavy bags.
