“Great service, great location, awful stairs.”
Reviewed 31 October 2010

This hostel has a great price and a great location! For my own room, with a shared bathroom, I paid about 22 euros for one night. The staff was really friendly - if I wasn't downright exhausted I would have spent more time chatting with them. My room was pretty adorable, with a big comfy chair and relatively comfortable twin size bed. I had a balcony, but they're doing construction on the outside of the building so I didn't really have access to it. The only downside? The stairs! Seriously be prepared. It's five or so flights and I would have been fine if I didn't have my gigantic suitcase with me (I studied for a month in Granada and was on my way home to the States). They sent someone down to help me eventually (after it took me about 10 minutes to get half way!). Internet in the room had a low signal, but was reliable.

If you are looking for somewhere with good value to stay in Madrid this is the place. We paid for a room with a private bathroom which was literally built inside our room...but it was worth it. Our room was very small but we were only there to sleep so that wasn't an issue. Our room was clean and comfortable. No frills at all, very basic but that's what we paid for. They did have free wi-fi and internet access in the lobby that you had to pay for. The staff was very friendly and held our bags at the desk for us when we arrived early. It is an old building and you have to climb up 3 flights of stairs so I would pack light! Our room overlooked a courtyard so we had no noise issues...although you can hear everything out in the hallway such as doors closing etc. but nobody was extremely loud or made any continuous noise. Chueca is a great little neighborhood to stay in...very busy at night with lots of bars and restaurants so you don't have to go far. Hotel was only a 5 minute walk from the metro and a 5 minute walk in the other direction to Gran Via so the location was excellent. Would definitely stay here again!

I stayed in this hotel admittedly because I was very price conscious. I had very low expectations for the hotel especially after I first encountered the stairs, which are very tricky with extensive luggage and I would guess also after a few glasses of wine. In any case, I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was very helpful and kind. I didn't expect them to speak any English, but they spoke a bit. Also, internet was available, enabling me to do work in my room without needing to go to a cafe or bar.

The room was small, but is located in a very lively neighborhood (the Chueca) located very close to a metro stop. Moreover, the Gran Via is within easy walking distance. I did not patronize the common room given the proximity of pasticerias and other places for breakfast, so I have no comments about that. I would suggest earplugs, given the neighborhood and city in which the hotel is located. However, I was able to go a few nights without my earplugs with little problem.

All in all, despite the small rooms, the persistence of smoke (sadly common throughout Spain) and its attendant smells, I found the room to be a good value. I stayed over a week here with no problems and would recommend the place, keeping in mind that there are more sedate and larger places available for people with more discretionary income.

Stayed for 3 nights as part of 2 week holiday in Spain. Was pleasanly surprised how cute and quaint this place was. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We were on a budget, so the room was very reasonable with ensuite facilities. There is a trek up a few flights sof stairs to get there, so not reccomended for the old and frail, more suited to younger couples who want to spend a time exporing the city rather than just staying in the hotel. once you have your suitcase up once though, its not too bad. Such a great location for the city centre, metro, loads of really nice bars, restaurants and ittle shops and boutiques. Lovely view from the balcony upstairs over the city.
This are of the city is not very car friendly so there is no car parking. You dont need a car here anyhow. We hired a car after our few days in Madrid and just got the metro to the train station for this.

Some of the reviews below are a little harsh. This is the only hotsel on our trip so i was expecting the worst. It wasnt as bad as people say.
The rooms are a decent size though not large. Even though the staff dont speak much english they tried their best to understand.
We had an issue with our private shower but they gave us a refund as they couldnt fix it or find us a free room.
The stairs are difficult when you have suitcases but they do come down and help you.

This hostal had been recommended by a friend and combined with the pictures from the website (which looked lovely) I decided to book this for my friend's hen weekend.

First impressions weren't great when we arrived at the grubby doorway straight off the street which further lead into a dank and dreary hallway. Approximately SIX flights of stairs later we rock up to the reception area - which admittedly was one of the bonus points of the place. The staff didn't speak great English but they were friendly enough and checked us in and showed us to our rooms (a triple room with ensuite, a twin with ensuite and a twin without a bathroom).

All I can say is that there are two floors to this hostal - the top floor which has been completely refurbished and is pretty decent and then the floor where the reception is, and where two of our rooms were. These rooms were musty, smelt of smoke, had really old furniture and the one with the bathroom had mould all over the ceiling. We had a guide book which really summed things up "In Madrid, you get what you pay for" and this was certainly true of the Hostal Dolce Vita. It was cheap and nasty. You can find some really nice places if you just shop around.

It did have a fantastic location - so I guess if you don't mind the state of the rooms and are looking for something cheap - then you might be satsified with this place.

We came back here for the 3rd time in 4 years, and for a fusspot like me this means this place is better than good!

We love it. Its central for everything, the rooms are quaint and most now seem to have upgraded to ensuite. The rooms were spotless and the beds comfortable and plenty of towels for the shower.

The breakfasts ARE small, coffee, juice and pastry, but this is a typical Spanish breakfast.

Two things to bear in mind if you stay here, there is no lift! Its a long haul up 4 flights of stairs with luggage and there is no aircon in the rooms! Id never stayed in Madrid in summer before and the ceiling fan in our room did little but move some warm air about - in saying that, it wont put me off staying here again.

  • Liked — The lights above the bed.
  • Disliked — No airconditioning for the hot summer months.
