I stayed at the Hostal Los Alpes for two nights in early May and was very satisfied with my short stay. In terms of value for money, you would be hard pressed to find better value for money in central Madrid (the hostal is only two minutes' walk from the Gran Via Metro Station and five on foot from the Puerta del Sol). I paid 63 Euros only for my two night stay, inclusive of all taxes (though not of breakfast, which is unavailable at the hostal). The previous reviewer (in English) will be pleased to hear that a fully-functioning lift is now available to whisk you up to the fourth floor! My room was not large, but was comfortably, if sparsely, furnished, with a sink and shower only (but no toilet - a communal one is located at the end of the corridor). The bed was comfortable, the bed linen clean and in good condition and there was ample hot water and hanging space for clothes, as well as small safe (for which you have to pay - 1 Euro for each time you open it). My room was at the back, so I was not disturbed by noise from the street. The staff at reception desk are not on duty as such but can be summoned when the need arises, which creates a slightly impersonal ambience - not that I was particularly bothered, as I returned to the hostal only to change outfits during the day and later on to collapse into bed! I found the staff perfectly pleasant, though I had no reason to request their help, as Madrid is city I know fairly well. All in all, an excellent choice for travellers on a tightish budget and an ideal base for exploring Madrid.

I stayed here between Oct. 16 and 19, 2005. This hotel is for people who have little luggage and can handle walking several flights of stairs. There is no elevator. The hotel is on the the 3rd and 4th floors; the 4th floor being the main floor to check in. (It's really the 5th floor so you have to climb 5 flights of stairs.) The rooms are simple and basic. It's a comfortable place to stay if you plan to be out and about most of the day. Request a room on the 4th floor. They are recently renovated so the rooms are more modern and clean. The website is (-)

Pros: Super clean, new, and well-maintained. Comfortable bed, TV, closet, plenty of outlets to charge electrical equipment. Just make sure your converter or plug has a rounded end so it fits into the wall. The room comes with towel and soap. Rooms are reasonably priced. For 23 euros a night, I got a single with a shower and sink but no toilet. You have to go down the hall for the bathroom. It's 26/27 euros a night for a single with a toilet. The hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to main attractions but also near the subway (Gran Via station) if you prefer taking the subway. It's also in a great location to shop (shoes and clothing). If you're from the SF area, the neighborhood is similar to the Castro district but not as grungy. Really eclectic.

Cons: The owners do not speak English but are nice. It's noisy; thin walls and doors. The con about staying on the 4th floor is you can hear the doorbell buzzing at all hours of the day, the guests walking to and from the bathroom, slamming of doors, and luggage being pulled across the tiled hallway floor. There isn't a front desk staff so don't expect them to help you with anything other than checking you in and out. You're on your own. You have the ability to come and go as you please once you check in and get the keys, but the front desk is not open 24 hours. So if you plan to arrive very late, tell the owners you will be late or else they will give your room to someone else or not be around to answer the door.

If the hotel could fix the noise factor, I would stay here again.
