“This is an interesting place to stay.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2010

The Silken Puerta America is a twelve story building that is a short walk to the Metro station. Each floor has a different architect and motif. We stayed on the 10th floor with Japanese decor. The room was done in red and black. There was a platform bed and a wooden soaking tub in the bathroom. It was somewhat minimalist, reflecting the Japanese influence. There was ample drawer and hanging space. We had dinner in the hotel one night - very good, but costly. Enjoyed the bar on the ground floor several times. We loved having breakfast around the corner and down the slight hill at the Cerveceria Jamoneria on Clara del Rey. This is a neighborhood restaurant. We seemed to be the only Americans, but were greeted in a friendly manner by the people who worked there.

Great architectural and design hotel. All the building has an architectural atmosphere. It's like a museum of architecture! Amazing! Metro: use the orange line and red one, good combination to the city center.

The idea that each floor is decorated by a different designer is interesting, but in reality the hotel veers towards the pretentious. I can live with the fact that I hated my room decorated in blue plastic with irridescent curtains - that is a matter of personal taste. But the finish in the room was far from 5*. Nothing was well fitted (surely a must with a very minimalist look?) and the chips, stains, cracked glass, etc made it feel poorly maintained.

I always though that design was the product of form plus function. Well the designer of my room forgot the function bit. Having to crawl on the floor to locate the hidden power point under the bed is not my idea of fun. The wardrobe with hanging space only 70cm high is totally impractical - where is a woman supposed to hang a dress? And don't expect to be able to iron any clothes creased in your luggage as the hotel is unable to make irons available, and the ironing service takes 24h - so no use for the overnight guest.

Location on a busy dual carriageway does not help, and service very patchy too.

The one saving grace was that the bed was very comfortable, but all in all I was underwhelmed and would not recommend it. There are plenty of more comfortable hotels in better locations in Madrid.

Wow. And wow again. I didn’t think that Tripadvisor’s reviewers could fail so miserably. All those superlatives for no reason. This hotel has no personality what so ever despite all individuality. The design is really bad. Design and function should go hand in hand, especially in a luxury hotel. And it actually feel a little bit worn already. My advise - do not stay here, just get here for a quick visit if you are really curious about it, there are plenty of stylish and more comfy hotels in the city center (I can really recommend the ME Reina Victoria at Plaza Santa Ana).

My wife has just stayed with the Silken Puerta America and she mentioned it was fantastic. Service was impressive and the design of the hotel like nothing else she has seen. Bed and shower were fabulous! Restaurants in the hotel were modern and sleek---food matched the 5 stars of the hotel....overall worth several trips back to this hotel that is like a modern art museum.

We had a lot of fun exploring the lobby on each floor. I stayed in a Kathryn Findley room and my friends stayed in a Marc Newson room. All of us agreed Kathryn Findley room is funkier. I loved the bathtub being in the room and only screened with drapes. The door seems to be thin and I could hear everything in the corridor, which is not acceptable for 5 star + hotel. The bed was quite comfortable. We found a deal with breakfast which was cheaper than without for some reason, and the breakfast was fabulous. Find the deal. We took taxi to the airport and it was about 25 euro.

If youre looking for a bargain then look for somewhere else to stay. The Hotel exudes "cool" so dont expect the usual creature comforts you'd get in another five star with shag pile carpets and mountains of free soap and shampoo. You pay for the design and thats about it. The basic price the hotel charges is for the "deluxe" room, which is the basic one. They charge more to change rooms and then charge again to upgrade to a suite, which is what most people would expect. That said, we stayed in the Japanese designed room which looked awesum. It's not supposed to be functional, just stylish. You walk in an dont want to touch anything in case you ruin the look. The hotel staff were initially typically surly spanish, but were friendly enough when you wanted something, the reception staff were particularly helpful with maps and metro details. The Hotel is about a five minute walk from Avenida De America Metro which has connections to all the other metro stations, including the airport. You can catch the 200 bus from the airport which is 2 euros (turn right when you leave the airport and walk hundred metres along the concourse). Of course, if youre spending this much on a hotel then you'd probably get a cab which cost us 25 euros one way. The hotel facilities are NOT functional but again are installed for style. The pool is not for swimming in but looks great and in the summer is open air. Its more of a plunge pool but it was never designed to accomodate screaming kids and blow up whales. The bar is expensive but offers good cocktails and great views of the city. The Metro is cheap and easy to work out and gets you to all the main tourist destinations quickly. If you go clubbing like we did, a taxi back costs in the region of 10-15 euros from central Madrid - a tip - unless you speak fluent spanish show the driver the room card which has the hotel postcode - they all use SatNav and have no idea where you are asking them to take you!
All in all this is a special hotel and is made special by its design and attention to detail. If its something special you are looking for then this is it. If you need a luxury base in Madrid with the same old bored hotel room interior then spend your money somewhere else.
