“outstanding hotel!!!”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

During a recent stay at the Abalu (not my first) there was a technical issue with one of the reading lamps that couldn't be resolved during my time there. The issue resulted in some discomfort and detracted significantly from our enjoyment of the hotel.
I was quite taken aback by the response of the Hotel's management and as a result, I have no hesitation in giving it a fully deserved five star rating. It is an exceptionally comfortable place, quite quaint in terms of its decor but its level of service truly set it apart. You won't find a more welcoming place in the center for sure (and probably not in the whole of Madrid!) Friendly, helpful, not at all stuffy and they always seem to be there when you need them and not when you don't!
Outstanding!

I booked the Hotel Abalu because it was recommended as number 1 "romantic" hotel in Madrid. Although we booked for 3 nights we moved hotel after only one night. The corridors are painted black and supposed to be lit by motion activated lights. These did not work making the corridors very dangerous. The lighting in the room is totally inadequate. Doing make-up, fitting contact lenses or searching in handbags was very difficult. The room was quite small. The large "boutique furniture only served to waste valuable space and was of no practical purpose. The Dickensian location in the back streets of Madrid and the shortcomings above make the Abalu a very unattractive proposition. The rate was 118 euros per night. Read my review of the Hotel Emperador to see what you get for 121 euros a night.

This hotel seemed to have wonderful previous reviews so we went ahead and booked for a city break. The location is ace in a super trendy area, and many tourist areas as well as nice cafes and shops in Malasana were really close as well as Gran Via. The room was clean, But we did find the room a bit of a disappointment considering we paid extra for a superior room with a balcony. The decor looked tired, and damaged and the black carpet was a little tired. Visible large patches of mildew in the shower albeit behind a panel of glass was offputting. The walls and ceiling were thin, and we could hear the couples in the adjacent rooms, including bedroom activities, which wasn't pleasant. We were in room 102 btw. We could sometimes hear conversations and footsteps when trying to sleep.
The balcony shouldn't really be advertised, as it was wholly occupied by the aircon unit, which was disappointing as we paid for a superior room.
On entering it was a shame that for a beautiful looking hotel we didn't really get a great welcome, with no explanation about breakfast or what to visit. We were just asked for our credit card n passport and sent on our way. This set the tone, and we had little contact with any hotel staff there in.

I reserved the small double room for single use and was pleasantly surprised by the size of the room - well designed to make the most of the space and it could have comfortably accommodated two people. I found also found the room to be clean and well maintained. The only downside was the fact that the walls facing on to the corridor seemed quite thin, so I could hear people running in the corridor late at night on my last night.

The hotel is within easy walking distance of a couple of Metro stations, though I found I could walk to most places within half an hour of the hotel. As a single woman I felt completely comfortable here and it's the neighbouring streets feel safe in the evenings; lots of people around. It's also nice to be out of a touristy zone. I had breakfast here for convenience but you can no doubt get more for your money elsewhere if you like to eat a lot in the morning. You don't have to wander for more than a couple of minutes in any direction for nice bars and cafes, and there's a small grocery shop right next to the hotel, which I recommend for stocking up on bottles of water in particular at normal prices.

Overall, I enjoyed staying here and am glad I went ahead with this choice rather than listening to some of the more negative tripadvisor reviews.

Great value for hip hotel in almost downtown Madrid.
Located 2 blocks from the Gran Via close to everything HOT to see in
Madrid. The staff was nice. The room well appointed. Bedding super comfy and decor
retro moderne. Loved it.
The signature colores of Hot Pink, Black and White rocked.
Did not get to taste the breakfasts but the coffee aroma in the lobby was enticing.
Great Value, small and quaint perfect location.
Thanks Abalú

We stayed at Hotel Abalu during the last week of August 2013. We are seasoned travellers in Europe. We would rank this Hotel amongst the best values we have encountered. While the room was small by North American standards, it provided all the essentials for a great stay, most importantly, the bed was very comfortable. Great location, easy to get to by subway from Airport. Staff was great, printed our boarding passes without hesitation and quite helpful in providing directions for touring city. The real test for any hotel is whether we'd a facility a second time, the answer here is a definite YES!

Room Tip: Take subway to Hotel, save time and money. Easily accessible from subway station. If you're in M...

Awesome hotel for hip, fun loving travelers. This was the best hotel we stayed at during our two week tour of Spain.

Location, location, location. It's situated right in the middle of everything, and in a great neighborhood for nightlife and dinning.

The room are great & but very well furnished.

The showers with the full-body sprays ROCK!!! Particularly after a full day of walking around and sightseeing, the showers will refresh like you wouldn't believe.

After a shower and a little freshening-up go to the roof top bar for amazing sun set views of the entire city.

Hotel staff are friendly and helpful as well.
