4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 May 2014

We were in Madrid for 3 nights for the 1/2 marathon. We've been to Madrid before and wanted a central location.

Room 3/5 - modern design and a bit quirky, with everything you need for a few nights. Comfy king bed with nice quality sheets and pillows. Small tv, fridge/minibar and plenty of wardrobe space. Being a city centre hotel, floor space was somewhat limited. My only gripe was that there were no bedside cabinets.

Bathroom 3/5 - modern style again, but not very well designed. Whenever we used the shower, the floor was flooded. We eventually managed to stop it by making a damn of tissues. It really needed a fully enclosed shower. There had obviously been problems before, as the carpet outside of the bathroom was marked.

Location 5/5 - perfect. Close to Grand Via metro station and next to Plaza Sol. all the main central sites were only a few minutes stroll away. There is a very handy small supermarket across the street. Tres Cruces road is a bit run down though.

Staff 4/5 - very friendly and helpful. We had constant problem with our room keys, so they eventually changed the door lock. They allowed us to stay on until 15.00 on our departure day and no charge.

Overall 4/5 - a pleasant hotel, with some issues, but with a really excellent location.

The location in Madrid can not be better. Tres Cruces is a quiet side street of the Gran Via. Short walking distance to all the main places; Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, museums and even Retiro Park. The room is small but the bathroon is big. My room was facing small space inside the building, no any sight but it was quiet. In Madrid there are people going and coming on the streets all night long, so I was very happy with this. Very good breakfast, fresh bread, fruits, "Jamon Iberico" and so on. I recommend this hotel.

Stayed in this hotel in October for 5 days on a visit to see the Real Madrid football match. Hotel was in a great location for the metro and all the amenties of playa sol. Madrid is a lovely easy to navigate city and this hotel hits all the essentials. Staff were very helpful even translating an offer for a theme park and printing on an attraction discount code. Would recommend
and hope to stay here again.

Can't fault the location of this hotel. Just off Gran Via, yet on a quiet road from which you wouldn't necessarily know just how central you are. Perfect base for exploring the city centre and taking in the sights, a couple of minutes from Puerta del Sol, only a few more minutes on to Plaza Mayor, and a leisurely 10 minute stroll from Retiro Park and the museums.

Staff were generally friendly and accommodating, looked after our bags on the final day when we had to check out but had hours left until our flight. Breakfast was a bit chaotic, area is rather small and staff seemed a little absent (tables cleared slowly, food replenished slowly).

Main issue was with the air-conditioning, which wasn't working at all for the first 2 days of our 4 day visit - particularly an issue due to such hot weather for the time of year (28 Celsius in April!). The room only had one small window looking out into a tiny square courtyard, which opened inwards so couldn't be kept open with curtains closed. I must confess we didn't complain about the air-con, presuming it to just be a very inefficient system, but on the 3rd day it magically kicked in and then things were more comfortable in the rooms. The public areas of the hotel seemed well air-conditioned throughout the stay, so perhaps there was a problem with the room systems only?

Bed was on the firm side, which is ok for me as that's my preference, but other members of the group struggled with it a little. Pillows were not good. However the room was a decent size, with a small fridge/mini-bar, TV, safe, and a fantastic bathroom with a great shower. Free Wi-Fi was useful when it worked, but had to make 2 trips down to reception to get them to reinstate my log-in as it kept not recognising me.

Overall a good place to stay for a visit to Madrid (location fantastic), but the inconsistent air-con could be a deal breaker particularly in the summer, and the set-up at breakfast could do with reviewing.

Just got back from a trip with my family to this hotel. We were recommended by a friend who doesn't have children. The location is great, it is about a two minute walk away from the metro so you can get around the city quickly. It is walking distance to plaza mayor, the retiro park, and many other great places that I can't think of right now. The experience inside the hotel was not so great. It was basically a fancy hostel with a bad breakfast. The shower was not warm and the water would get on the floor. My son almost tripped and hit his head. The t.v had no english channels and only one channel worked where they only showed spanish handball, basketball, and hockey. The breakfast was fine with various pastries, cereals, etc. I do have to say that the coffee and orange juice was AMAZING. It was very tasty and a great way to start off the day. The receptionist didn't really understand what we wanted and usually sent us in the wrong direction or just told us to take a taxi. The beds were not comfortable and didn't help us get over our jet lag. There are no activities within the hotel. Thus why I state that it is basically a fancy hostel. If that is what you are looking for, then this hotel is for you, it wasn't for us.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 March 2014

Just got back from 5 nights in Madrid (March 16-21) with my partner. There are both positive and negative aspects to this hotel...

Positive:

1) LOCATION The hotel is on a road just off Grand Via - Madrid's most famous street (like Oxford St in London). The Grand Via metro station is less than 5 mins away from the hotel. Grand Via has loads of restaurants, clothes shops and souvenirs. There's also a shop opposite the hotel, which is great for grabbing snacks and drinks. Parque del Buen Retiro is a 15 minute walk away. It's a huge, beautiful park with lots to see inside.

2) DINING Breakfast was very nice. They have a selection of cold food (cereal, fruit, ham, cheese, bread, pastry) and hot food (sausage, baked beans, scrambled egg and bacon). I'm a vegetarian so I can't comment on the meat, but everything else was lovely.

3) ROOMS Our room was facing the front of the hotel, so it was quite noisy. The shop across the road, had a few deliveries, which made a lot of noise in the mornings.

There were a lot of scuffs and scratches on the walls and dodgy paint work, which was a shame. There was less than five channels on the TV, and none were in English.

Although the shower was lovely, with a choice of three settings (over-head, handheld and super jets), the design was STUPID. The shower did not have a shower curtain or door, so there bathroom floor got soaked every time. You can use the bathroom door to block it a little, but then it gets cold.

The room is very simple - bed, desk, wardrobe, lamp and bathroom. There is no mirror in the room - just in the bathroom. That was annoying, as when I wanted to apply makeup/do my hair, the mirrors were steamed up.

The bed mattress is quite thin. The 'double bed' is just two single beds pushed together with nothing joining them together. We realised that one of the beds had wheels, and the other had legs. This meant that the wheely bed moved around... a lot.

4) HOTEL Hotel staff were very helpful and friendly. We reported the moving bed in the morning and when we returned at around 2pm, it was sorted out, and we had two single beds with legs.

I just want to add that although I'm used to 4 and 5 star hotels, I'm not spoilt, nor do I have extremely high standards. I'm 23 years old from a working class family, who prefers to save up for a better quality hotel far from the hustle and bustle. However, this time, I decided to be closer to the action, but had to sacrifice quality.

I feel that the hotel is more of a 2 star, with the extra star awarded for the lovely customer service and amazing location. If you're not too fussed about marked walls, average beds and poor designed bathrooms, then this hotel is a great place when visiting Madrid.
