“Always welcoming in a dour sort of way”

No evening in Madrid would be complete without a couple of aperitifs here to start the evening off.

If the staff are busy with tapas you may need to wait to be serverd but what's the rush?

Take your time and sip the lovely cool Manzanilla or for something different try the Palo Cortado.

After a week the staff start to recognize you but they are far from effusive.

Do not miss this place.

“Must Visit! A snapshot of Madrid culture. ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 December 2013 via mobile

A Jerez (sherry) house thst was opened "about 85 years ago" and has not changed since. The prices range from ?1.70-?2 for one of the five styles of sherry. And tapas are very high quality and almost criminally low priced.

Three things:
1- Do NOT skip this place, a must try.
2- Do NOT ask for a menu, it is posted behind the bar.
3- Do NOT tip. They won't take the money and seem insulted you asked.

We would never have found this place without TA.

“Spend at least one night in Madrid here.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 November 2013

I didn't read the reviews of La Venencia before my wife and I went on our last night in Madrid, so I accidentally did all 3 of the things that all the below reviews tell you not to (asked for a menu, took a picture, and left a tip)...and despite being yelled at by the owners for each thing, I would go back in a heart beat.

You will never experience another place like this anywhere else in the world, so I highly recommend it.

“What a fabulous experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 October 2013 via mobile

Visited this wonderful sherry bar during a brief stay in Madrid and I have to say it is an experience not to be missed. If you are looking for bright lights, loud music and cocktail-mixing bar staff, this place is not for you. On the other hand, if you want a bar with a huge amount of character serving wonderful sherries at extremely low prices (and tips are not accepted) and entertainment provided by the locals also enjoying their daily tipples, then you must pay this place a visit. Not quite sure why some of the others providing comments were negative about this place - perhaps they should go to any one of a number of the other modern bars serving fizzy foreign beers at sky-high prices and let the rest of us enjoy hidden gems like La Venencia.

“One more, senor Hemingway?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2013

Many bars around the world claim to have been frequented by Ernest Hemingway. Precious few of them still wear the vestiges of those bygone years as persuasively as La Venencia.

This is a genuinely extraordinary place. The decor...well, it's not so much a decor as a decades-old patina of grime and tobacco (from those not-so-distant times when bars were places to damage both your liver AND your lungs). In an age when authentic old drinking holes everywhere are disappearing under acres of fake wood panelling, it is a thrill to drink in a bar that has clearly not changed one iota in many, many years. And the bar rules remain the same as they were in Hemingway's day. One: No spitting on the floor. Two: no photographs. Three: No tipping. Whatsoever.

They keep things simple here. They keep it cheap. And they keep it good. You know what you're in for. They serve sherries of every type. They serve little tapas like mojama and hueva. They mark your tab in chalk on the wooden bar counter. They charge low prices by today's standards. Just like they always did, apparently. Mr Hemingway must have loved the honest, timeless simplicity of it all.
