“Nice hotel and friendly staff”
Reviewed 17 May 2013

On arrival at the hotel we were told that we could not have the twin room which we had booked and had to stay in a double bed for the 4 nights that we stayed at the hotel. It seems that if you travel with companies like Expedia you are not guaranteed to get the room you book. Fortunately I was travelling with my sister or would have been incredibly awkward. We were told that we could ask the next day for a twin room and their solution to a twin bed was giving us two duvets. I had heard and seen that the bathroom was in the room and it really is. I am attaching photos. The toilet did fortunately have a door (ours kept getting stuck on the quite rusty rail so that was annoying). The room had a safe but no long hanging space so nowhere to hang long dresses. The location was great and close to everything.

There are no coffee and tea making facilities in the rooms but we found a coffee place just down the road (turn left out of the hotel and it is a short walk away). There is lovely Italian restaurant that way too. The only English TV is the news channels and nothing else.

Taxi from and to the hotel was 35 Euros each way and took about 30 minutes.

About Madrid in general -

Please watch out for beggars. We are from London and there is nothing like this in London. They are on every street, outside all main shops and they even come into restaurants to beg at tables without even being told to leave.

While strolling through the park we noticed that you can hire bikes and get a guided bike tour around the park. I would definitely do that if I return to Madrid.

Room Tip: Book direct.

I booked this hotel for the last couple nights in Spain and it was by far the best place we had stayed the whole trip (out of 4 hotels, an apartment and an overnight train). I booked directly through them to ensure I got the room type I wanted (with the private terrace) and added the option to have a bottle of Cava waiting. When we got to the room, the bottle cold and the ice had not begun to melt (they had to have put it in while we were checking in). The room was spacious, the shower luxurious and the bet was a single bed instead of two beds pushed together. The terrace had a view of the plaza. I can't even list all the little things that were right and can think of no detail that was wrong.

Room Tip: Splurge for the terrace, especially if the weather will be nice and you have a group. The outdoor lo...

I say hidden as this hotel is in just off the corner of Plaza Santa Ana. That's not to say that it's hard to find but the entrance is quite understated.

This is a fabulous hotel with great sized rooms overlooking the square. Probably one of the nicest city centre hotels I've stayed in. I'd definitely stay here again should I return to Madrid.

And now for some specifics. The location is less than 10 mins walk to Plaza Mayor so it's very central. Although we got a taxi from the airport direct to the hotel we got the bus back which is not too much of a walk away so if you have a map before you arrive I'd suggest getting the bus which is only €5.

Madrid is quite compact so you can walk most places from the hotel. While there is a Metro we never used it over the weekend.

The hotel is very modern and perfectly clean. There is a bit of street noise but no more than you'd expect and with the windows closed you barely hear it.

The breakfast was good, with a pretty standard offering of fresh hot and cold options.

Fast and free WiFi is included and the staff were very friendly, helpful and had good English.

Overall I would happily stay here again and would definitely recommend it to others.

Really smart hotel in a great location right in the centre of Old Madrid. About 10 minutes walk from the Prado and from Piazza Mayor. Don't be put off by the fact the hotel is overlooking the busy Plaza de Santa Ana, which is absolutely swinging all day; the room was so well soundproofed that we didn't hear a thing once the windows were closed.
The staff we friendly but unobtrusive and the rooms very clean and stylish.
While the breakfast, that we had on a couple of mornings, isn't going to win any awards for gastronomy, there was plenty of it and it kept us going until the late lunch.
Recommended.

This would have been just any other nice centrally located and well presented hotel were it not for the terrific staff.

We had the misfortune to have one of our suitcases suffer massive damage while in the care of an airline's baggage handling facility. The airline was helpful having fully accepted responsibility with replacement suitcase to be delivered in 48 hours. However, this does not fit in with a total stay in Madrid of 18 hours with minimal Spanish. To the rescue came Cristina from the front desk of the hotel. The airline gave clear instructions on alternate methods of getting a new suitcase. Unfortunately their instructions were based on the use of the Spanish language version of the website which was significantly different to the English version. The solution for unfortunate travellers like us was to retire to the nearest Tapas bar for food and Rioja.

While we were out,and unbeknown to us, Cristina resolved the whole problem and we were able to collect a new suitcase the next morning.

Our experience definitely shows that irrespective of the quality of the hotel, the attention of the staff is far more importnat.

I'm kind of an obsessive researcher for hotels and vacations, and it was my absolute priority to find the most comfortable room in the best location for our 9-day trip to Madrid. After circling around a bunch of promising options (like the Catalonia chain), we finally touched down on the Room Mate Alicia, and we are so happy that we did.

Getting the right location in a city you've never been to before is challenging. There are so many popular plazas in Madrid and well-known neighborhoods, so it was hard to gauge where the most central location was. After arriving at the Room Mate Alicia, I was convinced that Plaza de Santa Ana is truly the best choice. It was a short walk away from multiple subway lines, the most convenient one being Puerto del Sol, a main transportation hub. Just a few blocks from the hotel were two of the best tapas spots: La Casa del Abuelo, famous for their shrimp and langoustines and Taberna Maceira, where we gorged on affordable and delicious razor clams and pimientos de padron (yummy scorched peppers).

Just a 10 - 15 walk away is the Mercado de San Miguel, the pricey but convenient indoor tapas arena, and from there, it's a fast stroll to the the famous La Cava Baja, the crazy busy old street lined with tapas joints and groups of young and old revelers (winos).

Right off of the plaza, there is Lateral, a modern tapas restaurant that is part of a larger chain that young Madrilenos love. It couldn't be closer and was the best choice for lunch on our first day--they even have menus in English. And just across the street from the hotel is Vinoteca Barbechera, a cozy wine bar.

Lastly, I'll get to the actual room. We booked the junior suite in advance on the hotel website and got the best deal I could find anywhere. They allowed us to book without advance purchase, which was nice. Our room was the junior suite, which overlooked the plaza. It was terrific people watching. There were a ton of windows and automatic blinds, which was fun, but it was sometimes confusing to figure out which switch did what--there were about ten blind switches overall. The blinds next to the bed weren't working, but it was fine--the window overlooked a building next to us, so we kept the blinds closed anyway.

The bath tub was GREAT! Huge and always clean. I'd read that some of the rooms had showers that stepped out directly in the room, but in the suite, it's tucked away behind this wall, in a small hallway that housed the shower stall, toilet (in a small separate room, and sink. The tub however was sort of in the room.

Breakfast, included in our rate, was okay--convenient and good enough for us to line our stomachs before our walks to museum row (Prado, Thyssen, Renia Sofia--all about 15 minutes away). There was some confusion one morning with the automatic coffee machine and the selection is basic, but it was definitely adequate, especially for the overall price of the booking.

For the quality of service, the size and comfort of the room, and the central location, I would highly recommend this hotel for couples looking for a nice but not too pricey relaxing Madrid vacation (seriously, I want to move there).

Room Tip: Book through the hotel website for the best deals All the junior suites are corner suites - same vi...
