The first room we stayed in smelled like a public toilet and the air conditioner made ridiculously loud clicking noises while it was on. This meant that we did not get much sleep firstly from the noise, and then secondly from the lack of air conditioning as it was quite humid. We asked the next day if we could swap to a different room, and this was accommodated without fuss. The new room was very similar to the last one in style and size, but minus the smell and with a properly functioning air conditioner.

The rooms we stayed in were the smallest the hotel had to offer, and although big enough for a short stay they did have much bigger rooms available. Being on the eighth floor (there is a lift!), there was no street noise and almost no noise from adjoining rooms either.

The location is excellent, on a semi-pedestrianised main street with shops and restaurants, within walking distance to many city attractions and also close by to several metros. The Puerta de Sol (main square) is a five-minute or less walk. The only downside to the location was all the prostitutes outside... dozens at least, at all times of the day and night. But they generally seemed to leave everyone alone, unless you were a lone male and you made eye contact.

This hotel is one of 4 hostels in the same building, which has 9 levels. Hostal Luis XV occupied the 7th, 8th and 9th floors, with reception on 8th floor. We arrived late at night and got a room at the end of the 8th floor which smelled really bad (bad drains kind of smell!) and was a small double bed, not a twin, but there were no other rooms available that night. However we were changed to a twin room the next day which was nice, on the same floor and a lot bigger. There wasn't anywhere much to socialise or make a cup of coffee, but there is a McDonalds on the ground floor and lots of other restaurants nearby. We had a view of the street but as we were on the 8th floor it was pretty quiet. There are 2 lifts but bear in mind that only one of them was ever working at any one time and the maximum you can fit in either lift is either 3 very slim people or one person and a large suitcase at a time. Because the lifts have to service 9 floors of the building, about 6 floors of which are hostels, and are very slow, there was always a wait and most of the time we gave up and took the stairs. If you are not fit, it is a lot to ask to climb up 7, 8 or 9 floors. The staff were polite, but not particularly interested or helpful. Seemed a little expensive for what we got, but for the location we felt it was worth it.

Once found, although not in the best of area's (red light, pick pockets etc) the hotel turned out to be very good quality, the young girl on reception was exellent!

Stayed here for two nights in March 2012 as part of our annual JBO (Jolly Boys Outing) trip.

The location was excellent with ample Madrid attractions and nightlife within walking distance of the hotel. There quite a few ladies of the night along Calle de Montera, but to be honest they do not hassle you at all and the area is very safe.

Service was efficeint, but not overly friendly.

Altough located on the 7th plus floors, we did not really experience any long wait for the lifts.

We were allocated three exterior facing rooms with balconies and excellent views over Madrid.

Very good value for money in an excellent location and I would highly recommend it.

Excellent service from the staff - very helpful and friendly. Single room people always seem to suffer and my room, even though very clean, was very dark and tiny. The location was perfect, close to a number of metro stations and good restaurants. Excellent value for money.
