Excellent location and good assistance from the personnel, although not fluent in English. Clean room and confortable bed.

The rooms are massive, the place is spotless and really secure, and you cannot beat the location and the price. Yes the street is a little bit seedy but it has absolutely no impact on going in/out the hotel on what is a very busy central street in Madrid. Also had a balcony with stunning views, but double glazed double windows to keep the street noise out.

I went to Madrid for a short weekend break with a group of friends. As students, we were looking for a basic, inexpensive place to stay that would fit into our stretched budgets. We booked two triple rooms at this place and I have to say we got much more than our expectations. This is a very centrally located place, bang in the middle of all action in Madrid. There is a tube station right across the street half a minute away which gives it the advantage of amazing connectivity, esp. from the airport. There are plenty of inexpensive and good eating joints nearby and the location lets you make the most of the superlative nightlife that madrid is famous for. The rooms were spacious, very clean and had tiny terraces affording some amazing views of the city, both in night time and day. the hotel has a cozy sitting area at the reception not many people frequent, which is nice for hanging out for a cup of coffee from the vending machine. The only downsides are a somewhat dingy lift and the fact that there are hookers hanging around in the street next to the entrance. This can be s problem if one is with children as I have seen them approaching men passing by. Other than that I had a great experience staying here and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, inexpensive stay to make the most of madrid in a relatively short time span.

This was more of a hotel than a hostal. It's located on the 8th floor of a lovely old building on the corner of Gran Via and Calle de Montagne. If you get the triple room on the corner of the building it is amazing (room 820). There are 3 beds, but one served as a couch and place to sort luggage. This room was spacious and had a table with chairs, a closet, and a safe lock box. The bathroom was clean, new, and had everything we needed. The balconies were so cool. 3 of them! We sat and watched the goings on of the square and the people milling about.
So, I have to comment on the fact that this street has some prostitutes. It's no big deal. They blend in with the rest of the people on the busy pedestrian street. They are dressed to look like they are going to the club and you don't see them talking up people. Very discreet and safe.
I must recommend the Kabob shop on Monterra just down from the hostal. You are close to Plaza del Sol (the center square) and not much further to Plaza Mayor.
Also, there is a lift. It was perfect!

Room Tip: Room 820 is super great!

Our friends told us to stay at Hotel Atlantico, which was booked (and far more expensive), so I looked on Google maps for nearby hotels and found this one. You are not staying in the lap of luxury, but it's clean and comfortable with a very helpful staff. You can't beat the price (90 euros for a room accommodating 4) and the location. We could see the Hotel Atlantico sign from our window, and feel very happy about the money we'd saved.

The first room we stayed in smelled like a public toilet and the air conditioner made ridiculously loud clicking noises while it was on. This meant that we did not get much sleep firstly from the noise, and then secondly from the lack of air conditioning as it was quite humid. We asked the next day if we could swap to a different room, and this was accommodated without fuss. The new room was very similar to the last one in style and size, but minus the smell and with a properly functioning air conditioner.

The rooms we stayed in were the smallest the hotel had to offer, and although big enough for a short stay they did have much bigger rooms available. Being on the eighth floor (there is a lift!), there was no street noise and almost no noise from adjoining rooms either.

The location is excellent, on a semi-pedestrianised main street with shops and restaurants, within walking distance to many city attractions and also close by to several metros. The Puerta de Sol (main square) is a five-minute or less walk. The only downside to the location was all the prostitutes outside... dozens at least, at all times of the day and night. But they generally seemed to leave everyone alone, unless you were a lone male and you made eye contact.

This hotel is one of 4 hostels in the same building, which has 9 levels. Hostal Luis XV occupied the 7th, 8th and 9th floors, with reception on 8th floor. We arrived late at night and got a room at the end of the 8th floor which smelled really bad (bad drains kind of smell!) and was a small double bed, not a twin, but there were no other rooms available that night. However we were changed to a twin room the next day which was nice, on the same floor and a lot bigger. There wasn't anywhere much to socialise or make a cup of coffee, but there is a McDonalds on the ground floor and lots of other restaurants nearby. We had a view of the street but as we were on the 8th floor it was pretty quiet. There are 2 lifts but bear in mind that only one of them was ever working at any one time and the maximum you can fit in either lift is either 3 very slim people or one person and a large suitcase at a time. Because the lifts have to service 9 floors of the building, about 6 floors of which are hostels, and are very slow, there was always a wait and most of the time we gave up and took the stairs. If you are not fit, it is a lot to ask to climb up 7, 8 or 9 floors. The staff were polite, but not particularly interested or helpful. Seemed a little expensive for what we got, but for the location we felt it was worth it.
