For those going to visit the city and surrounding, Hostal Bruna is excellent location. We were interested in clean, comfortable bed and bath hot water. The streets near the hostal are full of bars and tavernas where the food is pretty good. Located between the most important museums of Madrid and close to Atocha station trips are easy. 15 minute Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol 7-8 min ... and on the way to the two locations, market full of shops. Domingo, the owner lives there in the hostal, he does'n speak English but you can understand it. Are simple people, very helpful.

I stayed twice at this hostel in September and October 2012, it's clean, simple and very comfortable. The location is fantastic, and there is a great little cafe just outside the door open pretty much all the time. The rooms vary, some are small whereas once we got a big room with kitchen and sofa, but were serviced daily and the beds are great. It's a bit noisy at night, but that's the only slight negative I can think of. The owners are very helpful, will arrange taxis, store luggage etc and they respond to queries by email which was invaluable for me. For the price - excellent.

I stayed at this Hostal in May on a short city break to Madrid
I had never styaed in a Hostal before, but most city hotels were over my budget, so I chose Bruna
The Hostal well exceeded my expectations
In fact, the only reasons I could see why it wasn't called a hotel was due to there being no bar & restaurant, but who needs that in a capital city thriving 24/7?

Very clean, helpful owners, extremely secure (I think there was about 3 keys to get into our room)
Which was reassuring

Would reccommend, excellent value and location

Great location if you want to be in the centre without being right in the thick of the hustle and bustle; it's a short walk from Atocha, Prado and the centre of the city and located in a quiet street. The place was very clean and our room was cleaned every day and the towels changed. We booked a double room and were given a room with kitchen, sofa and table and chairs at no extra cost. Our bed was firm, comfortable and felt pretty new. I would recommend this hotel for anyone who wants to stay in a small family run place in a brilliant location for a very reasonable price.

There was some noise from the street late at night (mainly people walking home from the bars on the neighbouring streets) - if you're a very light sleeper you should ask for a room at the back if you're there on a weekend. There was some noise from the water pipes/the corridors but in an old building, like most of the cheaper hotels/hostals in Madrid, there's really nothing that you can do about it.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front get some noise (not excessive) from the street. Some reviewers say the rooms are small; ask for one with a kitchenette to ensure you get a larger one.

The location is terrific, juts metres from many great museums ( Museo del Prado, Museo Thyssen, Reina Sofía, ... ), near the park El Retiro and within walking distance of Estación de Atocha, lots of restaurants with great terrazas to eat, ...
The building is an old one and the rooms are a bit outdated, but on the overall they are extremely clean and worth the cheap proce you pay. It is a family run bussiness and the old couple running it are friendly.
It has been a nice surprise to discover this little pension I would surely repeat when travelling to Madrid if I am in a budget.
