The Hostal Bruna is a good budget hotel minutes away from the Prado Museum. The rooms are small but have heating, air conditioning, TV (spanish only) and comfortable bed. Ensuite bathrooms also smal but have good shower.
Rooms are kept very clean. As this is small family hotel, services are limited.
It is located on a quiet pedestrainised street, with cafes etc in easy reach. Try the Sociedad and the Colon for good budget meals.
Main downside of Bruna is the noise. It can be very noisy (doors slamming, people talking, lift) but was very quiet between midnight and 7.30 in the moring.

In addition to all the obvious physical advantages of this hostal (its location, its quiet, its cleanliness, its bargain prices), there is one more thing you should know. The owners are extremely decent and kind people. My son stayed in Hostal Bruna recently, before his return to the US after a year in Spain. The night before his departure, he was pickpocketed, leaving him with no cash and no credit cards to pay his bill the next day.

Not only did the owners just brush off the fact that no payment would be forthcoming (we have since sent a check), they also gave him some money to get him to the airport and on his way. We are very thankful for this kindness. I think it says a lot about the owners and I would recommend this place to anyone on a budget.

Hostal Bruna is quiet.

Let me say that again; Hostal Bruna is quiet. For those of you who have stayed in Madrid, you know how valuable a commodity this can be.

Bruna is a little gem, across the street from the Prado on a quiet little plaza. The hostal itself is impeccably clean and well run. Domingo and his family are happy to help if you need it--but just as happy to leave you alone if thats what you desire.

The neighbourhood is a warren of cool little streets, filled with bars, restaurants and interesting shops. There's an Internet place just up the street.

I found myself hanging out at Plateria, a warm inviting tapas bar directly across the street from the front door of Bruna.

As somebody has mentioned, the best way to get here from the airport, is to take the metro to Nuevos Ministerios, then take the #14 or #27 bus (use the "p/o Castellana exit) south to the hotel. This will save you humping luggage up and down the *many* flights of stairs as you transfer from metro line to metro line.

I splurged a bit and paid 40 Euros for a double room with ensuite--but could have had a single for 30 with the loo down the very short hallway.

The hotel is very well located, with most of central Madrid within an easy 30-45 walk. For art lovers you couldnt be more central, with the big 3 galleries all within a 10 minute walk.

All in all this was a great find.

I was extremely disappointed with this hostel. I made reservations about a month and a half ahead of time and requested (as possible) a room that had newer amenities. The hostel replied that they would (note, I communicated directly with the hostel). Upon arrival I was shocked to learn that there were no rooms available in their main building (i.e. the one specifically advertised on their website), so I was brought to another building about 25 meters away which contained their “other” rooms. Their website made no mention at all of this second location. I assumed these rooms served as their “extra” rooms in case of over-booking. I was furious! The second location was horrendous! As you enter, there is obvious construction in the first floor, with bricks everywhere, construction equipment all about, torn down walls, lack of staircase railing, and insufficient lighting. Their rooms at this building are located in the upper floors, and as there is no elevator, I had to pass this unsafe area every time I stepped downstairs to venture outdoors. It appeared construction was at an extended halt as I never saw workers there. I left this hostel after two nights. It was such a disappointment and inconvenience! The bathroom walls had mold, my towels were not replaced daily, the locks on the dresser and safety box were broken, most doors were so old and not installed properly which caused loud impact noises every time you opened & closed them, the kitchen and laundry amenities advertised on their web were non-existent (as relayed to me by the manager on the day I arrived), and I was charged an extra $6.00 for using a credit card as form of payment. I truly believe this hostel utilized FALSE ADVERTISEMENT as a ploy to lure customers to their location. Please, beware of this hostel, I do NOT recommend this place at all, learn from my experiences!!!

right in the center of madrid....next to prado and in walking distance of the main attractions...clean towels and sheets daily...friendly staff...small room, but it's ok if you want to use it only for sleep and preparing your day schedule...would go there again (both madrid and hostl bruna)...the only negative is the 'fun' part, but you don't have to meet the rest of the hostel's guests. spaniards are friendly enough to meet in the bars

The Hostal Bruna is a great find and anyone who wants a terrific location in Madrid which provides sparkling accommodations, great value and wonderful people operating it, should rush to this place. Domingo Dominguez and his family run it and they bend over backwards to help you with advice, suggestions, etc.
If you are interested in staying near the 3 major museums in Madrid the location is amazing, 50 yards west of Paseo del Prado, across from the south entrance to the Prado. It is off a nice quiet, little plaza with 2 good bar/cafes nearby--La Taperia and La Plateria, both good for breakfast (desayuno), meals or drinks. Also Cuatro Fuentes is around the corner, an excellent restaurant with a good value menu del dia of less than 10 Euros.
There is also a convient, inexpensive internet/phone store at Moratin 33, about a block away where the internet is .025 Euros a minute and international calls can be made for .20 Euros a minute.

The hostal is on the 3rd floor of a building that is being renovated--there is a modern elevator (no steps to climb) and it is obvious that great care has been taken to make the hostal a warm, comfortable place to stay. The rooms are freshly painted, have good furnishings, pictures on the walls, adequate storage, excellent floors, a safe and even a hairdryer.

Like all hostals, it is not perfect. Sometimes you can hear noises or people talking from other parts of building or outside--take ear plugs just in case. This is a minor thing compared to what you get by staying at the Bruna

We found the best way to get there from the airport is to take Metro number 8 from Terminal 2 to the end of the line--Nuevo Ministerios and exit to Paseo de Castellana (both metro stops have an elevator and escalators for easy movement of luggage). Go to a bus shelter on the west side of the street and take Bus 14 or 27 south--the street becomes Paseo del Prado.
Exit at the stop after passing the Neptune Fountain, across from the south entrance to the Prado. Hostal Bruna is about 50 yards west of the bus stop. The trip from the airport takes between 30-45 minutes and the Metro 10 ticket pass for 6.45 Euros can be used for both the Metro and busses.

If you are taking the train into Madrid, the hostal is a few blocks north of the Atocha train station.

I highly recommend this wonderful place!

The Hostal Bruna was a great place to stay during my trip to Madrid! The hostal is family owned and the family is very helpful and kind. I was late arriving in Madrid because my plane was delayed and they were very helpful and took only a few hours to clean up a room and prepare it for me. It worked out great because it gave me time to drop off my luggage and go get dinner with some friends and come back to a nice room.
I stayed in a private room with a private bathroom and I would recommend this to any traveler! The room was very nice...very clean and the bathroom was nice..with a nice tub to relax in. The room also had a tv and I loved the fact that I came back every day to a clean room with new towels and clean room and bathroom!
The hostal is located literally just across the street from the Prado museum which was very convenient because many of the other Madrid museums are close to this area.
I would recommend this hostal to anyone traveling to Madrid! I think that the fact that it is owned by a family is part of what helps them pay so much attention to the needs of the traveler. I felt very safe as a single woman traveling in the neighborhood where the hostal is located.
Please email me if you have any questions.
