“Good hotel, location at excellent price!”
Reviewed 24 August 2009

Hotel - Trendy hotel, at a great cost. Small room but had all the mod cons, bathroom a good size and very clean. Breakfast was great really impressed with the selection and quality.

Location - Couple of mins from the Opera Metro station, good location near the Palace and shopping. Quiet location, compared to other hotels we saw along the streets.

Roomates was an excellent hotel choice. We were right by the metro which allowed us to travel around the city easily. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent and they served until noon which allowed us to sleep in some! =) I highly recommend. Rooms were clean with a funky stylish twist.

I can't tell you how eager I was to get to Madrid. As a bit of a hotel buff, I was amazed at the rates offered for a hotel that was praised by everyone from the NYTimes to Wallpaper Magazine to the hundreds of outstanding reviews on this site. Now, granted, at 120 euro per night, I can't complain too much, but it IS OVERRATED.

Let's start with the service - mixed: Upon arrival, the guy at the counter was totally uninterested in us. His attitude was not indicative of the rest of the staff. One did make a great dinner reservation for us and upon check-out the attendant was helpful and friendly. Score on service - B - but first impressions to matter.

The room was efficient albeit a bit odd. The beds are not comfortable, especially after a long day of walking around the city. The "full" was actually combined twins, although we realize that this is common in Europe. The worst part - - downright bad in fact - - was the bathroom. This is definitely a case of style overcoming practicality. The shower floods after just a 5 minute shower. Never before have I needed extra towels to prevent flooding in a hotel room (yes, it overflows into the room). Seriously, bad design.

On design, I'm all for modern/chic hotel rooms. From Ian Shrager-style rooms to the new Holiday Inn Express, the chic-living thing is in. But to have little more than a foot of space and a rather-transparent frosting between your bed and the bathroom (yes, the toilet) is a bit much for evening the most loving and close of couples.

So, on the plus-side, location is good, balcony was great (two of them off the room we were in) and the breakfast offering is impressive. Really. Although having our room right beside the breakfast area was a bit annoying (dishes clammering starting at 7am). As for Madrid, the museums are outstanding and the food is great too (see my reviews -- one good, one bad -- for places just blocks away from the hotel).

Perhaps for 120 euro per night my expectations should have been close to on par for what my experience was; perhaps 85 euro would be more appropriate. But with the ratings so good and the publicity for the chain so outstanding (kudos to whomever is doing it!), my experience did not live up and I will not be recommending this place to others.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for 3 nights. We both really liked this hotel. It was very reasonably priced. The rooms were spotless and the decor was really nice and modern. We had a room on the first floor facing the street. The room was a little small but it did not bother us.The breakfast was fantastic. It was in a great location walking distance to all the sights and the shopping area. There were a few really nice restaurants nearby.Staff were also fantastic and very helpful. The toiletries in the room were also really nice.

This was our first visit to Madrid. Room Mate Mario was perfect! Getting to and from the airport via the Metro was easy and efficient. The hotel is within walking distance to major attractions. The staff was friendly and helpful. We would stay here again.

We spent 2 nights in Room Mate Mario just last weekend and we really enjoyed it.
We stayed in room 203, second floor, facing the street. The rooms are not spacious and quite plain but it's really enough for a holiday accommodation. Whats' great about them is the different designs on the walls, they are also very clean, have good-size wardrobes with mirrors, safe, mini-bar and all you expect from a nice hotel. Our room also had two little balconies overlooking the street which was absolutely amazing and very romantic! The bathrooms are tiny but again - have all you need are are very clean. The only thing we could suggest to the staff is thinking about irons to be put into rooms so that guests can iron their outfits before going out. Also the showerhead wasn't great, sort of splashing all over the bathroom but it wasn't a big deal for us.
The whole hotel is just lovely, great interior design throughout the property. Breakfast room looks amazing, is quite spacious and the variety and quality of food was really good. You'll find all sorts of tea, coffee, cold meats, cheeses, joghurts, cereals, fresh and dried fruit as well as something for those with a sweet tooth: donuts, crossants, pain au chocolat, cakes (also healthy low-fat option) etc. Another suggestion would be maybe introducing some hot dishes like scrambled eggs - I'm sure some people may miss that...
By the way both breakfast and wifi internet access are included in your room - for the wifi you just need to ask for a password at the reception.

The staff are really great, we never even saw the cleaning ladies or their trolleys yet our room was always nicely cleaned for us. The reception staff are lovely, speak good english, very helpfull and efficient - our check in and check out took only few minutes each. We were also at the hotel around 11 am in the morning and there was no problem with getting into a room so early - many thanks for that!
The location of the hotel is great. It literally takes 5-7 minutes to get to the Royal Palace (nice walk) and it's also within walking distance from Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol (note this is one big building site at the moment, you can use the metro station and walk from A to B but for tourists -it's practically closed, won't be able to take any nice photos etc). It's also approx. 15-20 min walk from Plaza de Espana and the egyptian temple Templo de Debod.
The only thing we didn't like about the property was the fact it was really noisy starting early morning due to the nearby building site and deliveries made to restaurants, etc.

Also just to let you know we landed in Madrid just before 10 am and it took us approx. 30-40 mins to get to Room Mate Mario by a taxi - but there was almost no traffic on the streets, we were just flying. It cost us approx. 35-40 Euro. Our taxi driver wasn't familiar with the hotel so make sure you have the name and address written down to show it to your driver.

All in all we had a fab stay, we'd love to stay there again when back in Madrid and we would definitely recommend it to our friends (by the way we chose the hotel due to friends' recommendations) :)

My brother and I stayed one night in this hotel and we absolutely loved it. It has a great location, the rooms are very stylish: very nicely decorated. The breakfast was super good too.
I would really recommend this hotel to anyone planning on visiting Madrid.
