We have stayed 4 nights at this hotel in March 2009 in a duplex deluxe suite. At first glance, everything seemed perfect, nice design, friendly staff, great location, lovely room and all at an affordable price.

However at second glance, there were a few faults. The weather was very nice and warm in Madrid which was not a problem since we had two air condition units in the room...we thought. They were still set to winter, therefore only produced hot air, therefore useless! Even a request at the front desk made no difference.

The bed was ok on the soft side, however for the room type much too small, I would have expected king size, but it was just about queen sized.

As other reviewers, we also felt that the noise levels were very high and it hardly made any difference whether windows were open or closed. I don't understand why they did not invest in soundproof windows...

Other than that, the stay proved to be pleasant and I guess if all was perfect, it would not be possible to get a room at this price in the heart of Madrid! Therefore I would still recommend the place.

My friend and I stayed at Hotel Room Mate Laura at the end of March 09. The hotel is in a very central location but, unfortunately, not as sound-proofed as it could be. We were woken up many times (and we didn't go to bed much before 3am!) by taxis, clubbers etc.
The room had air-conditioning but it was still pumping out hot air as they were on their "winter" schedule. We left it on, hoping to come back to a cool room but instead came back to a sauna! We were advised to leave our windows open but the noise was intolerable.
The apartment was advertised (and priced) as a "Deluxe Duplex" but the living area upstairs was small and pointless - we didn't use it at all.
Staff were unfriendly - the room was advertised as having a kitchen, but this was locked and not stocked so we had to ask etc. Any other requests seemed like too much trouble. The one highlight was breakfast, which ran from 7am until 12pm - it was plentiful, fresh and delicious.
Overall Laura was okay but no way as good as we were expecting, especially for the price we paid.

This was a first visit to Madrid for my wife and me (new empty-nesters), so we didn't quite know where to stay for our four nights (which followed four nights among Sevilla, Granada and Cordoba). We didn't want to spend a fortune on hotels, but wanted something up-to-date with good breakfast buffet and decent location. The Laura exceeded our expectations, as it was new construction with very tasteful modern furnishings, comfortable beds and linens and a superb breakfast buffet. When we rolled in the first evening, we were greeted by a very friendly and well-informed desk clerk, and on successive days we met two other desk personnel, who were just as friendly and accommodating. All three seemed to really enjoy working at the Laura. Our experience was excellent and we would return to the hotel on another visit to Madrid and would try other Room Mates in other cities (we actually stayed at the Room Mate Migueletes in Granada and quite enjoyed that as well).

A perfect location within walking distance of all major sights. A very clean and comfortable hotel but could have done with the air-con being on as very warm at night and could not leave windows open due to street noise. (weather unusually hot for time of year ) The staff are friendly and very helpful especially in the booking of restaurants etc. Would definitely return.

The design of the hotel was fun. One of the beds had quite a few hairs in it, and we asked for the sheets to be changed. They were not able to do that, and offered instead to change us to another room. By this time we had already unpacked, so it wasn't worth the hassle. The street outside was very noisy all night, and the fan/airconditioning only blew hot air. It would have been nice to cool the room down at night without all the noise from the street. The person at the front desk was very nice and helpful.

This hotel could not be better located. It is right in the heart of the shopping district and little more than a 15-20 minute pleasant walk from the Prado or Rotiro park. Madrid is a very lively city that DOES NOT sleep. The hotel is perfect for those not wanting to spend too much time in your room. The hotel staff are superb, friendly, multilingual and very helpful. Faultless in fact and as as good as any 5 star.. The rooms are contemporary quirky and functional. The beds are a little hard and other guests (less fortunate than I) complained about using two beds as the king bed. Book a double room if you want one bed. Breakfast is good continental fare.. Do not expect anything cooked, Croissants, breads, cold meats, fruit & cheese yoghurt, juice and good coffee. Perfectly good for the tourist anxious to get back out there. The hotel is not the most romantic getaway.. but the price and quality can't be faulted for the market segment it is in. Excellent tourist hotel with good free WiFi.
