This hotel is just fantastic, truly a five star in the center of Madrid. The staff pay true attention to detail that exceeded my already quite high expectations.
The location of the hotel itself is nice, located in a small plaza called the Plaza Independencia just a little outside of the main city center. It especially nice because you get a location within walking distance to all the sights without the noisy rooms.

When I first arrived at Hospes after a long transcontinental flight, I was placed into one of their "dreamer" rooms. The room was not very personally appealing and very dark. We then went down and expressed our concerns to the receptionist, and were instantly upgraded into a deluxe room; which was just gorgeous.
The room had a fantastic open floor concept that was extremely tasteful, and were immaculately clean. Not to mention the beds are some of the finest in Spain. Although there was no door to the bathroom, there was a small bit of screening which was just fine for us.

The amenities of the hotel are not on the scale of some of the other five star hotels in Madrid, but everything was executed well. The restaurant was nice with a terrace out in the plaza.

The staff in the hotel were just excellent, every staff member was extremely friendly. They noticed we enjoyed the fruit plate after ordering it with room service and afterwards they brought fruit plates up to our room at no additional charge. The staff made every attempt to accommodate our needs, and made fantastic restaurant recommendations (especially the night manager, he was the best!).

The Point:
This hotel is fantastic for those travelers who are looking for luxury and privacy, it's not The Ritz Carlton because it's a small hotel where they're aren't hoards of other people in the reception (we felt like the only guests in the hotel). It's a small hotel where the staff and friendly and the rooms comfortable.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the dreamer rooms facing into the courtyard, they tend to be quite dark.

Great location though building lacks character. Staff very welcoming and helpful - though saying we'd been upgraded wasn't true as I'd booked a deluxe room! Breakfast was amazing - lots of fresh fruit, cheeses, bread and meats. Very comfortable bed but bathroom open plan - walk out of shower or get out of bath in full view of partner/ person sharing room!!! Floor also very slippy when wet.

Let's say something positive to start with... Great location, clean, pleasant staff, free wi-fi.

But, and it's a huge "BUT"... Open plan bedroom/bathroom!

Whoever designed the rooms thought it would be cool and modern and slightly edgy and possibly "romantic" to have no door, no wall, no nothing, between the bedroom and the bathroom. It's all one. Open plan. So unless you are a honeymoon couple or someone who is young enough to enjoy displaying your naked body to your partner, you can pretty much say goodbye to any notion of privacy. From the comfort of their own bed, your partner can see EVERYTHING that is going on in the bath or shower (the toilet has frosted glass which sadly provides no insulation from the sounds and smells of your, err, lavatory). Nice. Really romantic.

Personally, I am not too shy, but sadly my wife is... And so is my teenage son, who is in the same room as us. They booked us as three in the room. But "suitable for a family", this is not.

The nice people at the front desk said that all the rooms in the hotel were designed in exactly the same way. Open plan bathroom. It's very common, they said. It contributes to the atmosphere, they said. The only "atmosphere" in my room was one of a freshly soiled toilet. Or maybe an atmosphere of icy coldness from my distraught wife who was trying to work out how she was going to survive 4 days without taking a bath or a shower or using the toilet.

To the hotel's credit, we were moved from our deluxe room to a suite, which at least has a door on the bedroom (a bedroom en suite, maybe...? Spot the mistake there). But in the suite, the bath tub is in right next to the main door, in the middle hall floor. Bizarre. You know, designers make mistakes and get lost in a world of their own coolness. I can forgive the designer. But for the hotel management not to correct this mistake, it is just unforgivable. And that is why I can only give this hotel one out of five. Could you not put up a curtain? I asked. Err, no, it's not possible, the concierge replied. Maybe that would spoil the atmosphere...

We arrived early flight, minus luggage lost by Swiss Air. Hotel reception was amazing; they smoothed all, gave me a flower, whisked us to an upgraded room ( it was hours before we expected to be able to check in) and took over the calls to chase the lost luggage. Later a bottle of sparkling and chocolate cake appeared: we came to Madrid for my Birthday. We loved everything about this hotel: 5 star service, tasteful, stylish room with huge rain shower, soft pillows for a good sleep. Gorgeous breakfast in sunny spot (discounted), tiny spa and sunny sitting corners. Location fabulous onto the park and near the centre so no taxis; we walked everywhere. Our stay was restful, hotel 5 out of 5.

This is a lovely hotel for a couple's weekend break in Madrid. It is in a central location and you can walk to all the major tourist attractions. The Airport Bus stops in Cibeles and the hotel is a few hundred yards away and very easy to find. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious and the bathroom adjoins the bedroom. We had a lovely 5 night stay and would highly recommend this hotel. The breakfast room offers a cold buffet with lots of choice and very reasonable. The service in the breakfast room is very good too.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the back as they are quieter

Everything about this hotel was wonderful. The staff was very attentive, friendly, and accommodating. The room was clean and super comfortable. I couldn't come up with a complaint even if I tried. We stayed at this hotel in January, so I believe the price was a fraction of what it would be in the summer, but I found it to be an incredible value. The nearby restaurants are on the upscale pricey side, but when you're splurging for a nicer hotel, why not splurge on dining as well?

Great places worth visiting were: Retiro Park (has a lake & Crystal Palace), The Royal Palace and The Cathedral; La Gloria de Montera Bistro (check Spanish menu for the lunch specials);
the Thyssen, Prado & Sofia Museums, the interesting buskers in Puerto del Sol; & the working Monastery of the Descalzas Reales (has English & Spanish 1 hour tours).
If looking for artwork, sculptures, visit the Artestilo opposite the Prado museum on Paseo del Prado 12 (check website).
Enjoyed a Flamenco show, many delicious Spanish foods and wines during our 7 day visit.
Look forward to seeing more of Spain and this historical, clean city at the next conference.

Room Tip: Stayed on the third floor facing Alcala Street - great for city view, listening to the music on the...
