“horrible service!”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

I made a reservation for this hotel through hotels.com but mistakenly cancelled it. I emailed the hotel to request to undo the reservation repeatedly but was totally ignored. They implemented a 100% penalty charge for the cancellation and I had to pay 110 Euros for nothing and they earned 110 for nothing!

If you stayed in hostels before, prepare to have your mind blown!
Sure, we've all seen venues located at the very heart of the city, but I've never seen one that would pack so many amenities with top-notch service at such a reasonable price. It shows that some serious effort went into furnishing and decorating the rooms, instead of just making do with the basics, and the extra care is readily noticeable. Plus, where else do you get your complimentary breakfast served in a stylish café right next to the state opera? And a decent breakfast, too! Long story short, I travel to Madrid regularly, trying different places one by one. Yet Hostal Luz instantly became this year's revelation, and I'll be sure to come back as soon as the opportunity arises.

I always stay here when visiting Madrid. More like a good B&B or family run hotel than a hostal. Although they speak little English I always manage to get understood. Margarita is a wonderful host and nothing is too much trouble. Wifi has a good reception in rooms and there are also 3 modern PC's available just off reception. Wasn't that easy to find first time but if you get off metro at Opera you will see Mcdonalds, Fuentes is first street to the left of McD and the hostal is the 2nd large wooden door on the left with no 10 above the door. The bell for Hostal Luz is on the right side of the door. There is a 24hr shop at the bottom of the street and plenty of bars and restaraunts. I feel safe walking around opera even late at night as a single female traveller. Opera and Palace on the doorstep and only 10 min walk to Sol.

The location is great, close to a metro stop and a 5 minute walk to a major metro hub and shopping zone. All kinds of food and historical sites within walking distance and major parks are a long walk or short metro ride away. Very little English spoken but hey, your not in the USA or England are you? They ladies try valiantly and we found them to be very helpful even when communication was tough. They are remodeling the shared bathrooms which is a good thing, they need it. The high rating is for the value and getting just a bit more than what you payed for. The room we had was small and the bathrooms I believe will get better. I would prefer to give between a 4 and a 5 but bumped it to a 5 due to the value.

Room Tip: Our room was on the inside ct and was very, very quiet

I've stayed here several times and use this as my 'gold standard' for hostals. It's super clean, the bedding is soft and smells nice and fresh, it's small but well lit and very comfortable. The location is great. I speak Spanish so was able to translate for some other guests that only spoke English. If you don't speak Spanish, you can probably find someone around that can help. Overall, it's a great value.

The location is faultless, however locating the hostel at the beginning proved difficult (be warned, the only sign is on the buzzer!). We stayed in a double room with a shared bathroom. Generally very clean but the quality of the room is nowhere near the quality of the high end priced rooms. Luckily we got moved rooms (the twin room is very ugly) but unfortunately encountered a number of problems over three days. The problems were fixable such as leaking air con, broken lamp, dodgy Wifi, broken cupboard, no soap in the bathroom but it was just a hassle to be honest. The owner speaks little to no English too. The breakfast was very small and in a cafe nearby.

Room Tip: Request a double bed if that's what you want.

Great location. Lovely rooms. The first night I got a room which wasn't advertised on the website which wasn't as nice as I had expected but still fine. The second two nights I was put in a really lovely room. It was modern and clean and had a fridge and air con! I'd definitely stay here again and for anyone who wants somewhere above the usual hostel fare but at a great price, I'd suggest waste not your time and just book here.
