“Maybe a bit too basic - apartment needs more to be comfortable”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2010

We stayed in one of apartments offered at the Colors location and although it was spacious enough, it lacked certain amenities that makes one's stay comfortable (and that you'd expect when renting an apartment.) The pillows were sub-standard and had to be supplemented with a towel, there was no duvet, just a sheet and some blankets in the closet, no hairdryer, no kettle, tea pot or coffee maker (they do offer coffee at the reception area, but the keys to the apartment don't open the reception door, so it has to already be open to access it), no tea towels and no broom. The all-white color scheme is a bit stark in the winter months, especially when the white walls are scuffed and dirty. Free internet was great, as was the location. We walked everywhere we wanted to visit in Madrid - a few minutes walk to the Prado, Botanical Garden, Reina Sofia gallery, shopping, Royal Palace, etc.

This [--] child of a chic boutique hotel and a backpackers hostel is something I would not return to.... In the future I would just prefer to spend a little extra money for something nicer. However, for the location it is extremely cheap and you do have a private bathroom. They also have a Nespresso machine you can use at much as you want

My complaints: walls were too thin and was frequently woken up, "do it yourself" breakfast was kind of gross (I don't trust the hygiene of other guests), shower didn't drain properly, toilet made horrifying sound that woke me up during the night, bed was extremely unfcomfortable, and the heater didn't work properly. Also the staff was indifferent and I didn't really feel I could complain to them. I paid 40 euros per night (best rate pre-paid) which is truely a bargain in a city where that is the cost of lunch.

A couple of friends were staying in the Chic and Basic in Barcelona and they showed me their room and I was very very impressed.

I was going for meetings to Madrid and saw they had a new one in there, so I canceled my previous booking and went with them instead.

I think I was staying at this hotel when they were just about finishing the construction, so the room still smelled like fresh paint. I was staying at a single room and it was rather small but not tiny. The room decoration was very minimalistic but nice.

The pros:

* Nice, new and neat
* Very central and good location
* Free and fast wifi

The cons:

* Breakfast was on a bag by the door (probably because they didn't have a kitchen yet?)
* If you want to hang out in the room, there's really not that much space

I'll give it another go next time I'm in Madrid.

I stayed at Chic and Basic Colors over four nights in January in a single room, the green room specifically. The room was decent sized and well appointed. On the surface the room looked good but the bed was narrow and uncomfortable, the pillow lumpy and in need of replacement. The ensuite bathroom was great, excellent shower pressure and a never ending supply of hot water. The room featured ample reading light, TV (only Spanish speaking channels), self controlled heat, and a lockable wardrobe. The room is the first one off the general purpose reception/breakfast area and with thin walls you could hear everyone coming and going at all hours. The room walls are thin so if you're a soft sleeper bring ear plugs. Having the option to fix breakfast or a light meal in fully stocked breakfast area was cool - lots of pastry, fruit, cereal, meat/cheese options. There is a guest PC set up in the same area if you want to check email or look something up on the web. There is also free wi-fi throughout the property, password is given to guests upon check-in. The staff were in the office primarily during the morning and they appeared to make a point of being there whenever new guests were due to arrive (pre-arranged when booking). All the staff I spoke to were super friendly, they offered advice on the restaurants in the area and generously let me do a small load of washing in the hotel's laundry room. Location of the hotel is FANTASTIC,right in the middle of the historic district on Calle Huertas. A ten minute walk to Plaza De Sol and The Prado museum. Plaza De Sol is also the closest metro stop.

This hotel is in a great location. Staff very friendly. The rooms are basic but clean. Whatever you do do not take the rooms facing the road. They are noisy and will keep you awake whole night specially if it is a weekend.

Overall a good place, location for the price.

Great location - close to everything in central Madrid. Lots of very good places to eat in the area. Kind of dark at the entrance at night (no outside light for the door), and avoid the rooms close to the central area (they would be very noisy). Breakfast is a DIY deal and quite good. Decent price, and decent room.

At first sight everything looks modern and clean.
But in our room we had problems with the shower (falling from the wall) and the electricity (going up and down).

Something inconvenient also is that the reception is not manned during all hours as advertised.
We had to leave our bags unattended for a while.

Conclusion: cheap chick.
