“Fillet of beef a joke”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

t looked promising. Great atmosphere and crowded in the bar. The starters were not bad (the Castilian soup was really good). For the main course, I ordered beef cheek, my friends lamb cutlet and beef tenderloin (medium) with apple aioli. The first two dishes were okay or even excellent. But the beef seemed to be forgotten in the grill pan. When we took a closer look, it did not look like beef tenderloin at all (more like a pork chop). Well, my friend complained and the waiter took away the so-called beef tenderloin. After ten minutes or so he came back with a double folded entrecote on the plate! My friend gave up. But if they had no beef in the fridge then why pretend? Unfortunately we cannot recommend Casa Alberto to anyone this time.

“Traditional Fare”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

This was a more expensive meal than the ones we had been eating in the tapas cafes around Plaza Santa Ana. The service was excellent and helpful, one waiter spoke a little English to compliment our basic Spanish. The starter I had merits particular mention - it was a chilled asparagus soup poured around a warm prawn, avocado and tomato salad. Delicious! My husband enjoyed a stuffed squid dish and we drank a Madrid red wine which was new to us. Excellent if you want a classy traditional meal with touches of innovation.

“Book in advance because it gets full”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

This is a real gem of a place. We booked in advance via the internet as there were 6 of us. We arrived and were seated on a table at the back. We ordered wine and whilst we were deciding whether or not to have starters a plate of croquettas arrived so that was a decision we didn't have to make. For main courses we had a a various dishes including lamb cutlets, ox tail, cows cheek and tripe casserole. All were totally delicious. Then for puddings! My brother in law and I had the leche frita and were wondering what 'fried milk' would be. Squares of custard, and almost savoury but very nice after a rich main course. My sister chose to have the cheesecake but I thought she was going to cry when my uncle cut into his dark chocolate fondant. She is going back! And I hope we all do. Interesting porcelain in the gents toilet.

“Glad to have got here before it's sold”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

Is it up for sale. Sign says so but it's been here since forever, difficult to get a booking and easy to see why. Fantastic atmosphere, interesting décor, good service, great food, great location, full of history, character and characters. Could find no fault and would happily recommend for tapas or full meal to the passer by or discerning diner. Would certainly return if I go back to Madrid and even if the business moves on I'm sure the chefs and staff will stay. Aficianados of FCM will find plenty to look at on the walls too!

Find Herman, an awesome English speaking waiter. He totally took care of us , secured us a table near the bar, persuaded us to not over order the tapas , mopped up the beer which we spilled and warmly shook our hands after we decided to drag ourselves home after a few hours.. Such a gorgeous and historic bar with yummy pork scratchings ,croquettas and tortilla, You would be mad to not include this atmospheric place on your bar crawl itinerary.
