“Third Time - still fantastic!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 July 2014

Stayed a week at the Pension Segura, third time in two years. Previously reviewed it - excellent then - this review just to confirm what a great choice this Pension is. There is usually no English spoken (occasionally staff covering at weekends etc are able to..) but communication between the two of us (inexcusably having no Spanish at all - keep on planning to learn) and the courteous & friendly reception or cafe staff was never a problem. Rooms are fantastic value, clean and air conditioned; totally acceptable in size (especially considering the price!). Breakfast is €2.50p/p extra - various choices ( toasted bread with tomato (recommended!), or other toasted varieties or pastry, coffee/tea & fresh fruit juice served in the cafe downstairs or better still outside on the plaza in front of the cafe watching the world go by. And what a great place to watch the world go by - everyone seems to walk past the hotel on the way over the old bridge and river, a 2 minute walk away into the centre of town (itself only a 5 minute walk!) It's a lovely relaxed big town with masses of charm and atmosphere, perfect for walking around. On our first trip we had a car (the hotel staff can direct you to nearbyish free parking) but it's not necesary; there's a great regular coach service from Alicante Airport to Murcia - only costs about €5 each (buy tickets at the airport bus-stop or on the bus) and there are great train & coach connections to all nearby towns and beaches - all similarly priced. The coaches and trains are all airconditioned, punctual...
Back to the hotel! Stay here, you won't regret it! We're already looking forward to going back!

Stayed 3 nights room only. (Room B) The room was small and compact but it was very clean and comfortable for our needs. We only needed somewhere to sleep. The bathroom was also very clean, Towels provided. Free WiFi provided which was a bonus. A kettle and cups in the room would be an added bonus so you can have a cuppa while getting ready. I had taken my own travel kettle, coffee and cups so was able to have a drink before going out for breakfast. You can buy breakfast at the hotel which cost 2.50€ and is served at the adjoining cafe downstairs. Breakfast is coffee, orange juice and a toasted baguette with jam or tomato. It was very nice.
The staff at the hotel were always pleasant and polite. They do not speak English and although we do not speak much Spanish at all we did manage to understand each other and we got by.
The location of the hotel is very good. Only a short walk into the city of Murcia. The directions from Murcia bus station were not very good at all but we did manage to find our way. (Can't remember where I got them from!)
If I was to visit Murcia again I would definitely stay at Pension Segura

Booked this after reading reivews, and being forewarned of a potantial language barrier. Pension is located up a flight of stairs to reception desk. Man at front desk aims to please, very welcoming, and clearly used to broken tourist spanish and sign language. Rooms basic but clean, a no frills night sleep. Beware water and juice at front desk very expensive (2euro for water) otherwise a good room for good price. I drove in late and left eArly so cant comment on the neighborhood. Front desk man said free parkingon street where blue ilnes drawn till 9 am, which I found helpful.

Room Tip: good for the price

+ Good location.
-/+ The nice old man at the reception desk doesn't speak English but he always smiles and tries to help.
+ The breakfast is served in a cafe downstairs. Pay in advance, it's a couple of cents cheaper. Each day in the morning you'll receive a ticket which you have to show at the cafe. I don't think the waitress speaks English (at that point I gave up speaking English which no one around understood anyway and tried to improvise in Spanish). The breakfast consists of a glass of orange juice, two big toasts with tomato paste (or some other topping) and a coffee. Okay for the price (about 2 euros). Order, sit outside, a nice waiter will bring you the stuff.

Two of us stayed 4 nights in this great family pension; the welcome is warm and friendly, really personable, but beware that they only really speak Spanish! That being said I had no problem communicating with my appalling language skills, but I intend learning a few more phrases for next time! The rooms are not over-large, with just the right amount of space - very well presented, good air-conditioning and great shower. Our room faced the main street but there was only very limited noise from outside, you'd hardly notice it (but see the rest of the review about this!)There is always someone at the hotel desk at all times, and good selection of drinks/light snacks if wanted. Breakfast ('desayuno' - learnt that one!), continental style is served in the connected 'Cafe Alphonso' downstairs. The breakfast is extra - a couple of Euro or so more p/p - great value; you can sit inside or outside on the pavement/piazza area just outside and watch the world go by.
The location of the hotel is (again!) perfect - just across the picturesque river (the 'Rio Segura') from the centre of town. It's a two minute walk to the beautiful Cathedral Square. We had a car and the first night made a mistake in parking in a nearby underground carpark costing more than €20 for a night; second day I asked (somehow..) and was given good directions to an area just over 5 minutes walk away which has free parking all day/night - but watch out as a lot of people are looking for free parking! When I go back I think I'll probably ditch the car; to get round the City of Murcia itself - a car really isn't needed (but if you going to travel round the region of Murcia then a car would be useful.)
And the City of Murcia is absolutely fantastic; I was dumbfounded to find a City that manages to blend in a vibrant modern young city with tradition and history. It is a great mix of old and new, full of historic old Churches, buildings and Piazzas and yet at the same time be a totally modern prosperous place. The people are amazingly warm and friendly. For some completely weird reason there are virtually no tourists; I've got no idea why because Murcia is without doubt one of the nicest Cities in Europe, up there and in my opinion better than the main European capitals or great cities. Again, the city itself does not need a car, it's easily walkable, but it really needs several days to appreciate.
One more word of warning (or possibly of instruction!) - our first morning we were wakened at about 6am by incredible noise, of (huge numbers of) people talking outside, then of gun shots, then of Church bells ringing all over the City (perhaps now 6.30 or 7!) - we had arrived the day of the annual Procession of the Image of the City's Patron Saint from the Cathedral to her Sanctuary in the hills outside town - which goes right past the hotel; it was a fantastic sight - there was no more sleep that morning! But I just wish I'd known earlier about it and I would have got up and joined the Procession myself (as it is we joined in at the end by the Sanctuary, very moving.) The lesson is of course - do some research first, there are lots of Festivals and similar and they're well worth joining in!
To sum up; this hotel is 'real' and (another Spanish word I learnt) 'real' means 'Royal' - well here you definately get a 'right royal welcome' in what must be the most likeable City anywhere!
I've only just got back and have aleady booked up for Easter (fantastic propcessions etc..) next year. Great hotel!

Murcia is off the main tourist routes in Spain. As such, there are few tourist hotels, not much competition and high rates. I paid 30 euros for a room the size of a postage stamp. There is no elevator in the building and the stairs are mountainous. The staff is very friendly, the hotel is very clean, and the cathedral is within easy walking distance.

If you want a hotel room in Murcia with a private bathroom, this is one of the cheapest that you will find. If I had to do it over again, I would probably have tried to find a room on the Spanish booking site quehoteles.com.
