“Half term at the Helios”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2013 via mobile

My partner and l stayed here for a week full board during the half term holiday. We had a lovely spacious room at the back of the hotel with a jacuzzj bath /shower room. The room was cleaned everyday and the hotel in general was spotless clean.
At breakfast there were fresh pancakes and omeletes available and the usual cereals , toast and fresh baked baguettes and croissants were available every morning. At lunch and evening meal there was plenty to choose from and there was a Chinese theme night on the Friday night.
The pool area was also cleaned everyday and there were plenty of sunbeds .
The drinks were very reasonable , two pints for 3 euro between 3 and 9 everyday.
Cant comment on the entertainemt as we went out everynight but the entertainment room was always quite busy . All in all we had an enjoyable stay at the Helios and would stay here again .

I have just returned 6/11/13 from a weeks family holiday staying full board at The Hotel Helios .
There are a number of positives to say about the hotel which is why I have given it a three and not less.
The Hotel is very clean( if a little dated and tired in style in the main areas) but the rooms are spotless ,bathrooms modern (complimentary toiletries) , the rooms are cleaned/towels changed every day by friendly and helpful staff. There's also a hair dryer in the bathroom .Our room was a great size for 2 adults but a bit of a squeeze for three, as there wasn't enough wardrobe and drawer space for me as I like to take a lot of clothes !! And the 3rd bed was portable and not as comfy as the other 2 at all :( so we took it in turns sleeping in it .
There was a decent sized balcony with a pool view (which we emailed as a request before hand), and a fridge and safe in the room that could be hired (although the fridge did hum on a night, but after a couple of nights we got used to it . The flat screen TV also has a few English channels on it .
The bar staff were helpful as were the reception staff when we requested more pillows and a morning call they were happy to oblige. The drinks in the hotel bar are really reasonable
(1 :50 euro for a pint of local beer )6 euros for a bottle of wine and the coffee is lovely too that's served at the bar(1:60 euro) .
The pool area was really clean and well looked after there was enough sunbeds during our stay , but I can imagine in peak summer it would be very crowded as it is a small area and not a big pool.
The entertainment in the hotel is geared more towards pensioners, although the Elvis tribute was good, but the daytime music in the bar in the afternoon was often morose chamber music :(

The food Hmmm !! I read the reviews beforehand on Trip advisor that indicated the food was good, as nice food is really important to our stay anywhere (especially when full board).

I and my family are really not fussy or at least we haven't been when staying in other hotels in the UK and abroad, but being totally honest the food really was not at the standard I would expect in a three star. It was always at the best just warm and at the worst cold (I used the microwave in the dining room a number of times to re-heat my food). The desserts were repetitive and of a cheap processed quality .The fresh fruit was limited to a few bowls ... Often we would find it difficult to find anything to eat that we fancied , we didn't look forward to any of our meals at all , I acknowledge that food is subjective to personal expectations and taste, but to me a holiday that includes the food should be an enjoyable experience and not a chore to search out something that's hot and edible ... The staff in the restaurant worked really hard and were friendly and polite, but there was a lot of queuing and the dining room is work/school canteen like, brightly lit and noisy ,not conducive to lingering in with a bottle of wine. The last night we couldn't face it and ate out .

Room Tip: Rooms with a pool view and that are above the 7th floor have a nice view too .

Have just returned from a week at the Helios with my partner and 9 year old daughter - had a great time overall in Benidorm but the hotel had good and bad points.

On the plus side, we had a great room with a big sunny balcony and jacuzzi/shower bath. It was quiet and fairly spacious as far as hotel rooms go but the double bed was small and also very hard to sleep on. If you're over 5'10" tall, your feet will hang over the end of the bed. There was one long bolster pillow which was not that comfortable. Bathroom was clean but had no plug so we had to ask reception for one. Shower attachment was built for midgets and so low on the wall that even I had to crouch down to get my hair wet.

Pool area was great - but this was early November so there was not a rush for sun beds. Pool was heated so lovely and warm. There was a grassy area around the pool but this was sadly roped off - would have been nice to have been able to relax there too. There was aqua aerobics at 12pm some days.

Staff were efficient and friendly.

Now for the food - ughh... canteen food springs to mind. Yes, there was lots of it but who goes to Spain to eat endless chips, brussel sprouts, apple crumble, black pudding, lukewarm scrambled eggs etc? Would have loved some more Spanish dishes but I guess this hotel caters to a certain unadventurous clientele. Saturday night at the cooking station was burgers, chips and fried onions!! On Friday there was a Chinese themed night and we were glad of the variety. Puddings were either jelly or the Spanish equivalent of Angel Delight; sloppy, moussy artificial concotions. We've done other package holidays with First Choice/Thomson before and had salmon, prawns, seafood, carveries, paella, cheese boards, chocolate fountains etc - but not at this hotel. It really was budget quality. Most of the guests were English and there were some Dutch and Spanish guests there... not sure what they would have made of the food quality or variety. I would only rate the food 2 out of 5 at best. Water cost €1.40 for a small bottle.

However, we discovered the hotel did picnic boxes and these were good; rolls, tins or tuna and paté, fresh fruit and bottles of water. We ended up having picnics for lunch which was much more enjoyable.

in October/November this was NOT a family hotel... 95% of the other guests were couples in their 50s or pensioners. And no-one smiled! We would look at couples who never spoke to each other during the entire meal. The front of the hotel was filled with mobility scooters for hire.

Entertainment started late - shows were at 10.45pm so late by UK standards if you have kids. There weren't many kids in the hotel when we stayed, despite it being half term and unfortunately there was only a half hearted attempt at a kids mini-disco.

We ended up spending most of our time at the beach, walking along the promenade, exploring, hiring a car and driving to Guadalest in the mountains, also caught the bus up the coast to Altea. Overall Benidorm was a nice break out of season and the Helios was a convenient base with a nice pool, lots of space, not too crowded but it would be so much better if the food was improved and 'localised'.

Thank you for sharing your holiday experience on Trip Advisor.

We are pleased to see that you were happy with some aspects of the hotel throughout your stay.

The demographic of our guests varies throughout the year. In the summer months from May till October the hotel our guests are in the majority couples and families with a large number of children. In the winter the demographic changes to an older clientele.

The restaurant caters for the various nationalities that the hotel accommodates at any given time, offering a menu that will be suitable for British, Spanish, French, Belgium and Dutch guests, in addition to apple crumble, black pudding and a wide variety of British products, we also provide a wide number of Spanish dishes including every lunchtime a different paella dish, meats cooked there and then at the showcooking area and a selection of pastas. The food is cooked and maintained at the temperatures required by law under the health department’s regulations and the microwaves are provided as some guests prefer the food to be warmer than others depending on each guest’s personal taste.

The grass area around the swimming pool can be used by our guests providing only towels are used on that area to avoid sunloungers and chair damaging the area and are stated as such on the sign around that area.

We are constantly looking at ways to improve the satisfaction of our guests and we will look into the comments made to see if change is required and once again we are pleased the overall holiday was pleasant and that you had the chance to discover the surrounding areas.

Kind Regards,

Jason McKerrell,

British Guest Relations.

Just back from family holiday and I would recommend the Helios the food was very good and always something different every night .great location for everything as well . Thanks to hotel for giving us a pool view and with the pool being heated it was really enjoyable ,room was cleaned every day with fresh towels also supplied every day . My only gripe and it's not the hotels fault was the elderly English, and foreign guests that were rude at eating times we were in line for dinner and they would just push in front of us and our kids one night one man went behind the chefs station to help himself .To get respect you have to show some

Having stayed at the Helios before we were looking forward to a half term weeks holiday. All the staff in the hotel were great again, and everthing was spotlessly clean.Food was a little disappointing this time, good selection but sometimes barely warm. The worst was nothing on for the children (until Thomson's rep got involved) You will love the entertainment if your a line dancer,if not forget this hotel for your evening entertainment

Thank you for sharing your holiday experience.

We pleased to see that you had a pleasant stay with us and found the staff great and the hotel spotless.

The entertainment programme changes between the winter and summer months, with the main focus throughout summer being activities for all ages, in the winter months the programme can vary, and upon being aware of the situation we put something in place.

Visited for a week in October. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is planning on visiting benidorm. The hotel rooms are extra clean and modern with a nice layout, however the beds after a couple of days felt a bit hard but with all the other good factors you forget about that! The food had a wide selection and puddings, breakfast was also good too. The staff made you feel welcome from the first step into the hotel till the last and would always say hello. The hotel is a short walk from the beach and is also right next door from the market which is two days a week.

We would definitely come back to this hotel and benidorm! Thanks for a relaxing stay and holiday :)

We would have rated this hotel more than its three stars and if you visit you'll find out why!

Nice hotel, well situated for everything, about 7 minute walk to beachfront, close to shops & market, close to nightlife but not on top of it where noise keeps you awake.
Reception staff welcoming & helpful, we were given a welcome box as arrived late in the evening.
Plenty of choice in the restaurant, entertainment good, rooms clean & spacious.
Can't fault this hotel & would return.

Room Tip: Pool view definetly.
