“fantastic family holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

we arrived with a 5 hour delay due to a french air traffic control strike, a little tired and jaded and with a 2 year old all we wanted was to check in, dump our bags, have some late dinner and go to bed....

Reception....

on arrival we met the wonderful lady (who's name escapes me) on the desk, nothing was too much trouble, the sea view we upgraded too was done, they had made the sofa bed up for our 2 year old but advised if we did indeed need the cot to let them know and the sofa bed would be collapsed and a cot would be there by the time we returned from dinner.

Internet.....

Superb Internet (for Spain) a couple of times when it didnt work with the sheer amount of people on it suppose, but no complaints, it was free and i needed to keep in touch with work whilst away a couple of times a day.

Bed....

Huuuuuuuge bed, so comfortable, shower and a bath in the room we had, spectacular view (we were on the 8th floor) on the beach, sea and to 'the rock'

Breakfast....

Breakfast is very generous and well set out, just about anything and everything you could wish for, we found going downstairs onto the ground floor far quieter each morning, everyone was queueing on the lobby level for breakfast, one 20 sec lift ride down and hardly anyone there, and tables and chairs on the promenade if al fresco is your thing.

Pool....

the pool is lovely, an infinity pool which is no more than 1.7m deep in any place so perfect also for kids, they dont allow balls, or games in this pool, there is a smaller kids pool, very shallow perfect from 18 months - 5 years old, sun loungers (free) everywhere - double bed loungers at each end, cabana's on the roof terrace above the bar, they enforce a 20 min rule for sun loungers so you cant just turn up and claim one then go away for hours which is a nice touch. Pool was super busy from 11am - 230pm then 75% of the people disappear like magic (Siesta) and leave the pool a very tranquil, quiet, relaxing place for the remainder of the day.

TV...

have to mention this, the TV's in the room have all the main English channels, was handy for us when the little one went to bed, we watched the world cup on the BBC and ITV but its a nice touch to see full English channels instead of just Sky News and BBC world News !!!

Supermarket....

inside the hotel and well stocked, cheap in fact, we stocked up on essentials and snacks, drinks etc daily

Bars....

the Pool bar and hotel bar and well stocked, not mega expensive - the goblets of Gin & Tonic are lethal....

Car Parking....

Park in the Sol Y Mar car park and speak to reception at the hotel - its 75 Euros for the week which lets you come and go as you please, parking in the streets outside is a lottery and the Policia Local like to give tickets, we saw plenty...

overall....

i travel extensively and wanted a quiet family holiday with my wife and little one without the need to go long haul, after having visited the area for a friends wedding in 2013 (we took a villa with friends) this hotel catered to that need and more, would we go back ? YES... if you can afford it, go for the sea view rooms, they are worth the extra money for that view.

thank you Sol Y Mar !!! we'll see you soon :-)

Room Tip: Sea View...

I went to this hotel some time ago already, it was April, so not to much tourist in the area. The reason for the travel was to assist to a friend's wedding at the swimming pool area in the hotel.
The room was excellent with a superb view to the sea from a high floor (the 10th if my memory is right), the attention was very good, and I even was able to get a sandwich after the check in, despite it was late and the bar was closed.
The swimming pool looked nice, but we didn't use it because the ambient temperature was still a little cold at the time.
They have a pub/disco in the basement (ground floor from the sea side) with nice music.
In general was an excellent experience!!

Room Tip: If you can, ask for a room with sea view

We have just come back from a 4 night B&B stay at the Grand Hotel Sol Y Mar after reading reviews and was pleased to find it lived up to the reviews. Reception staff were extremely helpful and check in was quick and easy
Room, with a sea view on 4th floor, was spacious, with a stunning view over the sea. In the room there was nice touches, fruit, coke & water toped up in the fridge daily.
Although a large hotel, at night there was no noise evident to disturb an excellent night’s sleep in what must be the most comfortable beds experienced - nice and firm and Huge.
Breakfast was buffet style with a large variety of options of pastries, cold meats, cheeses, fruit, cereals, varieties of bread, freshly made omelettes, juices and 5 different milks! Also available was champagne!
The pool, although not enormous, was big enough and never overcrowded overlooking the sea, with numerous sun beds with padded mattresses, plenty of shade was available from the large umbrellas if required and double bed loungers on the top level. The poolside bar with reasonably priced drinks and light lunch menu.
It’s the little touches that make a holiday! the hotel had noticed it was my husbands during our stay and provided a bottle of champagne in our room with their compliments
All in all we could not fault the hotel which certainly lived up to its reputation and we are already planning a return

Room Tip: Book a Sea View, Well worth it

Recently spent a week staying in the apartments here. We had a two bedroom apartment. I booked this direct with hotel via their website. Booked transfers online too from airport with. Beni- connect. Enjoyed a lovely holiday. Have mixed feelings about the hotel.

Pros:

-Amazing buffet breakfast - all you could want and more.
-Hotel is in a great location for the beach, old town restaurants etc
-Supermarket in basement is huge. We bought lunch here and self catered in our apartment whilst baby napped. Also bought beach toys.
-Baby pool shallow and ideal for young kids.
-Apartment generous in size and well equipped. Washing machine great when have young kids!
-Reception, bar areas quite opulent with great views.

Cons:

-Rather expensive, cost around £1000 b&b for the week for 2 adults and 2 infants not including flights.
-Apartment was noisy at night. Poor double glazing. Kept awake very, very late from street and wedding noise for 2 out of 7 nights (we were on 4th floor).
-Apartment was clean but not spotless. Mould in both bathrooms which could be removed with elbow grease.
-Asked twice in advance (once 24 hours before arrival) for cot to be set up ready as arriving late with young family and wasn't there when we arrived and had to chase reception twice at 11.30 pm at night.

To summise, had a lovely holiday but not sure the price represented value for money. Could have spent about 25% less elsewhere for as an enjoyable holiday. I booked based on reviews on here and was not disappointed but wouldn't return.

The room, the reception area, breakfast, the swimmingpool, the restaurant at night, the bar…. everything was very up to date and clean.
BUT… When we wanted to borrow a bottle opener they wanted to charge about 10€ which was silly since the supermarket in the same building had one for 3€ to by… no service was for free…

Everything about the Gran Sol y Mar says luxury, comfort, welcome and enjoyment. 100 friends and family of newlyweds Rhiannon and Richard stayed at this wonderful hotel, before and after the Nuptial Mass at the church of San Francesco di Paola in Rafol d'almunia.
We will definitely return time and time
again, to sample the wonderful food, the spa, the pool and poolside bar, and the very helpful and friendly staff.
The return home came far to soon!!!!
We will see you next year and thank you Gran Sol y Mar

We stayed in this hotel for a week in March on a B/B basis.
Everything was absolute tops from the bedrooms(sinks made of glass?!) to the dining areas to the leisure club located by underground passage.
The only one critisism was the price of the parking(€80 for the week!)pricey to say the least, but seeing as there was no where else to park we were the captive audience!

Other than that its well worth staying. The views of the ocean(if you have an ocean view, obviously)are superb.
