Hotel Montiboli is a beautiful hotel located on a cliff edge the coast of Villajoyosa. The Hotel has access to 2 pebble beaches directly below the hotel (there is a lift from the hotel to the bottom). One beach is for regular folks the other is for the nudies! The hotel has it's own pool which is quite small but never got over crowded when we were there. There are towels available from the pool hut which also sells drinks. The clientele are generally Spanish, French and English so there wasn't a problem with towels on sun beds first thing in the morning. The pool area is a wonderful place to relax, it looks directly out to the sea from which there is the occasional sea breeze, a welcome relief to the heat in August! On arrival to the hotel (which has a private patrolled car park) we walked to reception through the well kept garden front. There are steps to the reception door with an alternative ramp for people with cases or disabled. The staff speak good English and are really polite.
Once checked in we were shown to our rooms which are excellent. Keycard entry reveals a room with an en-suite both finished with marble floors. The beds are really comfy although they were 2 oversized beds pushed together rather than a double. The bedroom contained bed side cabinets, Satellite TV with pay per view movies (only Sky news and CNN for us Brits), a mini bar which was free and restocked daily (no spirits), lots of wardrobe space and use of a free digital safe. The bathroom was in laid out well in three sections - mirror, hair dryer, shaving etc with sink - Toilet/Bidet - Power Shower. The balcony was a good size with table, chairs and sun lounger. Our room overlooked the mountains with the sea to the left - apparently the 'sea view' rooms are also excellent but book early for those as they are the most desirable! The private suite look excellent and are obviously the place to stay if you want to pay the extra cash.
Once we'd dropped of our things we decided to go for a drink in the hotel bar. The bar is lavishly finished and goes though to a large balcony area. It was 10.30pm and the view showed the sea reflecting a full moon which was great. The atmosphere is relaxed with chilled music playing in the background which doesn’t drown out the sound of the waves crashing over the beach. The waiter service is good, a bottle of beer is around 3 euros a G&T is around 8.5 euros. The bar meals are pricey though, a steak sandwich cost me around 20 euros!
The breakfast was good. When seated you are asked if you'd like fish or bacon, sausage and eggs (cooked to your liking) - you are then free to enjoy the buffet breakfast (cold meats, breads, cheeses, salads, fruit, pastries, yogurts etc. etc.) all really nice with good service and overlooking the sea.
The restaurant is well laid out with great service but we found the menu a bit limited and there was no vegetarian option although they did rustle something up it was basically roasted vegetables at 25 euros so be warned if your a veggie. We were staying bed & breakfast so we decided to look for somewhere else to dine in the evenings during our stay as it was a bit pricey (110 euros - 3 people, no starter, main course and desert - no wine).
This is where we struggled - if you want to leave the hotel for eating out or entertainment then you have to drive or taxi everywhere. The hotel is in a residential area, there are no bars or restaurants in walking distance. The local town (about 20 euros there and back in taxi) has a couple of restaurants and bars but they are really spread out from each other. Benidorm is at least a 50 euros there and back in taxi (Alicante is too far for a night out). There is no entertainment in the hotel either except for a guy playing the piano on a Saturday night so we ventured out to Benidorm every other night (apparently the 'old town' is more sophisticated but we never found it - had some great nights there though!!). It was nice leaving the hustle and bustle of Benidorm and returning to the hotel. There is a massive Casino between Villajoyosa and Benidorm which is excellent if gambling is your thing. You need to wear trousers or smart jeans - everyone gets dressed up. You cannot enter without your passport so make sure you take it with you.
Overall a brilliant hotel which would be perfected if they occasionally put on some entertainment hence my 4 Stars. The local resort has nothing to offer apart from the beach so bear that in mind before booking. I really enjoyed my stay there.
I've added some photo's of the hotel - take a look!
