“We did love it!”
Reviewed 30 June 2010

The hotel was in fact the bright spot of our entire trip to Spain. Although a bit expensive, it succeded in satisfying all our preference for comfort, location and romance almost completely . It's a very specific and really nice place, very pictoresque, quiet, comfortable and friendly. We did enjoy our stay there. Let us also emphasize the friendliness and skills of the Alhambra bar staff, very creative and nice people.
The only weakness of the Montiboli is its SPA, inexepctedly scarce in options (only one sauna cabin, a few primitive showers, even not enough benches to leave our bathgowns upon, etc.) Neveretheless, the rest facilities are fab! Our verdict is: heartily recommended.

We've been going to El Montiboli since 1996 -probably some 20 visits in all but didnt go last year because we were so fed up with the food - overpriced spanish haute cuisine and not the sort of meal you could eat more than once in a five day stay. We haven't been able to find a decent restaurant around locally and anyway don't want to have to drive out every night. Anyway after reading a review on here that theyve changed to a buffet we decided to give it another go.
Glad we did! It's true that the entrance is completely different but actually it is extremely attractive - if you hadn't seen the courtyard before there would be no complaints.
The old restaurant looked gorgeous but the new one could be any good modern hotel - until you look at the view out of the window - unbelievable.
The buffet is expensive 35€ for a buffet is a lot but the quality is top notch and the live kitchen has some decent quality fish and meat on offer. Service is still excellent at the top level although the lower waiters could do with some training. Wine is expensive and the bar prices make your eyes water! 9.75€ for a gin and tonic.
Breakfast is still brilliant.
We always have lunch at the beach bar owned by the hotel next door because they offer really good barbecued food(anyway even in mid june the Minarette was shut) and the main restaurant offers the same at lunch as dinner. BTW the two set menus for 50€ look absolutely mental! one is based on chocolate - every single course!
The old heated swimming pool has been revamped as well and incorporated into the spa. Free to use although they charge 5€ for obligatory rubber shoes and swimming cap. The girl did offer us a bag to take them so we could reuse them which was nice.
Although the junior suite we had was ok the bed was very hard; ( the bungalow beds used to be awful old things!) and the tv system is not very good - the Paradors' are much better.
All in all though glad we went back for another visit and will go again

Our 2nd getaway to Montiboli and was even better than the 1st. Stunning location to relax and recharge. A garden room is a must as they have the most spectacular views. fall asleep to the sound of waves below. Food much better options than before. Buffet is excellent and we usually dislike buffets. We'll be back!

Although we have stayed several times in the last few years and seen a lot of upgrading,we were taken aback on our last visit to have a special celebratory meal.There is no a la carte,only two very limited set menus and a poor buffet.it wasnt even possible to order a steak.Would residents staying in suites be happy with this?The wonderful maitre d Fernando is still there and sommelier Silvestre,but we came away thinking that we wont be returning.The wonderful garden has been cleared of the magnificent trees and the fountains in the style of the alhambra have gone. The fabulous service,attention to detail and amazing food which we have e xperienced over many visits there have sadly gone.I can only hope that the hotel reverts so that the magnificent chef can create the dishes he is renowned for.

Do yourself a favour and do not go to this hotel as you will be disappointed.
Service and attiude of stafff is poor even by Spanish standards and this we felt came from the director himself who clearly does not care about his guests. The food in "el Empearador" restaurant is very average and extremly over priced not a surprise it is always empty. As the waiter put it "this is a 5 * hotel you expect 5* prices" but he forgot to tell us that the service was 1*. Outside of high season July/August forget about any services in this hotel. Rooms are very tired in the old part,dusty and the bathrooms are a disgrace.When we were there in September there were only 5 other rooms occupied this says it all. My advice go to the SH Hotel in Altea better value, better service.

Since this is a long-time member of Relais & Chateaux in Spain I always wanted to pay a visit to this address.
Pluspoints:
* Splendid location, on the top of a rock, overlooking the sea
* Good but a bit pricy food in their main restaurant
* Very good breakfast
* Nice Spa

Minor points
* If you claim to be five-star; pls. see to it that your staff speeks more than Spanish; housekeeping, roomservice etc. only understood Spanish which in fact did cause several misunderstandings and irritation on our side.
* Restaurant near the beach does lack any kind of atmosphere and they just do charge too much for average food here
* The interiour looks quite well maintained but really, the exterior of this hotel needs extensive work; our balcony was just torn down (pieces of stone falling out of the wall). gardens are not well maintained at all and it really needs paint all over the place.
* Just forget about being served at the poolside. There is a phone, but one will sooner reach the moon than get a drink down there.

It might be the case that this place only is up to standard during the main season. It looked and felt deserted in May and the staff we could find acted accordingly.

One night here was more than enough.
