“Best Area!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 January 2014

El Barrio del Carmen is part of the 'old town' in Valencia and the best area to stay for a little holiday! Gorgeous architecture and inexpensive accommodation from hotels to holiday apartments.

“All of human life is here ...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2014

This is the place to eat in Valencia, with loads of bars and restaurants of a good standard. Just remember it's not cool to eat paella in the evening! There are plenty of streets to wander round with markets, artisan shops etc. We also enjoy the local graffiti, which is of an artistic standard and can be quite bitingly satirical once you get into it. Just go where the Spanish are and you are sure to have a great evening. Plenty of nightclubs too to suit most tastes ...

“Lovely atmosphere strolling through this ''Barrio''.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2013

An evening stroll in to the "Barrio del Carmen", can be a good alternative to spend a pleasant moment.
Many alternatives to restaurants and clubs of all kinds.
A unique attraction, alternative and culturally interesting, being located in the historical center of the city, walking through it you can reach the main city attractions, such as the beautiful churches.
It is a quiet place, because Valencia is a quiet and safe, so enjoy the ambience and the good walk.

“Good Looking District”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2013

Barrio del Carmen is the historic centre of Valencia. It is a relatively small area of the city but by far the most attractive. There is a buzz about this part of town helped by the dozens of restaurants and bars packed in tightly amid historical surroundings.

El Carme is a good looking part of Valencia, Well known bulidings like the Valencia Cathedral are a tourist draw. The atmosphere is in part created by the many narrow lanes and side streets. Most of those little paths have restaurants, cafes, or bars. They look fine in the day but come alive at night when the patrons turn up.

There seems to be little sense of theat which makes it a comfortable place to enjoy.

The downside of the area is definitely the large amount of stores closed down and bulidings under repair. While Valencia is relatively wealthy by Spanish standards its historic heart is not currently operating at full capacity.

The sangrias also take their toll a little as the morning after does need a clean-up.

The erratic nature of Spanish life does have an impact on a traveller with several attractions not open at varying points in the afternoon.

Amid the winding streets there are quite a few gems to be found. It is a part of the world with plenty of charm.

“Weird and wonderfull”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2013

Well known to the people of Valencia as an area of cosmopolitan bars and bohemian nightlife. If you look around the twisting, ancient streets of this quite charming area, you may encounter some strange and wonderful places, from gay to gothic, jazz to reggae, and even weirder if you want serious alternative entertainment. If you check out a city map, the area between the Torres de Serranos, the Torres de Quart and the Plaza de la Reina is the Barrio del Carmen. You will find more bars and restaurants between the Calle Caballeros and the Mercat Central. Enjoy just strolling around and absorbing the multi cultural atmosphere, taking tapas here and there and having a few beers. You are quite safe at night, Valencia is a very safe city. All in all, a fun place to wander around and enjoy the atmosphere. Do not be surprised by the prevalent scent of cannabis in many of the bars. If you do not fancy the barrio at night, it is still a fun place to visit daytime with lots of quirky little shops and, of course, within walking distance of many of the main attractions of Valencia.
