Amazing to see! Walking thru after the Colleseum was amazing. Kids enjoyed all to see and using their imaginations.

“So much to see”

Well worth seeing the Forum, the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum. Wear sensible shoes and take water to keep hydrated.

“Unparalleled history”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

History buffs already know why Ancient Rome is a must-visit. This review — concentrating on the Roman Forum, adjacent Palatine Hill, and the Colosseum — is for the rest of us.

The Roman Forum was the seat of ancient Rome — where Ceasar ruled and the Senate deliberated. Palatine Hill was the posh neighborhood where the monied class lived. And the Colosseum hosted tournaments and gladiators and other assorted events.

First off, set your expectations: the Colosseum has been restored to a point of near-intactness. Palatine Hill includes parts of buildings that give you an idea of the structures in which rich Romans lived. The Roman Forum puts the ruin in ruins — what's there is mind-bogglingly historical, but it's in tatters.

Set your watches: giving all of these sites their due takes the better part of a day. Bring snacks and water.

Plan ahead: Ticket lines can be crazy long. Buy a ticket online, or visit the ticket booth at Palatine Hill, which tends to be shorter. A combined € 12 ticket provides access to all three sites for two days. (I'd also recommend the guided tour of the basement and third floor of the Colosseum for an extra € 9; it was totally worth it.)

Choose your adventure: These sites are outdoors and require walking and imagination. Folks with limited mobility might want to split their visit up into chunks. Kids might get cranky after an hour or so.

Skip this: Circus Maximus — the onetime venue for Roman chariot races — is a short walk away. These days, it's a very big grassy lot with next to nothing historical about it. Don't bother with it.

“Signage needs improving”
Reviewed 7 April 2014

The information provided on each board at each location within and around the Forum is actually very good and informative. In fact, I'd say don't bother with an audio guide unless you're a real history buff. the individual boards give as much as you need to know. Site signage is poor however. I understand it is necessary to close areas for refurbishment but the direction signs should be kept up to date as should the map/guides.
