This restaurant was recommended by the owner of the B&B where we stayed in Matera, and it was good advice. Service was excellent, the food was great, and the wine recommendation at dinner was very good value. Scalopini with lemon was very good, as was sausage gypsy style. Pasta with porcini mushrooms and truffles was a treat -- the salads, vegetables, and fig gelato were all excellent.

As a side note, while we were having dinner outside a man in a wheelchair and his partner came up. It would have been very difficult to get him up the stairs to the restaurant, but in no time the owner and a waiter brought a table, chair, and everything else down to the footpath and set up a comfortable situation, with no drama or undue attention. We were very impressed with this consideration and believe it is typical of the service at this place.

Run by husband and wife and they welcomed us warmly. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere and the service and food were very good. This is the restaurant that Mel Gibson visited on several occasions during the filming of The Passion. Not Michelin standard but worth a visit.

I'm a little surprised at how highly rated this restaurant is. Food was good and service very good but I would expect more from a restaurant this highly rated. Ambiance was just average. Our server did an excellent job but he seemed to have a significant number of tables to wait on. Menu was extensive. My wife probably liked this restaurant more than I but maybe I was expecting too much.

Trattoria del Caveoso is at the the furthest point of Centro Storico from Matera's main Piazza, but it is well worth the walk.
Nicola and Angela Bianco combine great food and wine with a lively, friendly atmosphere and although you can have a great evening here, lunch is just as good. We arrived in Matera on a public holiday. All the trattorias, gelaterias, restaurants and bars were packed and we had given up on finding anywhere to eat as we were repeatedly turned away. Caveoso was full, but Nicola found us a table from out of nowhere and memorable helpings of puree'd fava beans with bitter greens (wild chicory, and completely different from what we get in UK), washed down with a carafe of their very drinkable house red.
During the several evenings we spent there we sampled excellent food accompanied by bold reds made from aglianico grapes by Paolo Latorraca at Cantine Madonna delle Grazie in Venosa, some 70kms from Matera. On one of our visits, after a significant quantity of grappa, Nicola rang Paolo at 1 in the morning to arrange a personal tasting the following day - how accommodating is that?!
The menu is cucina tipica of Basilicata and will not damage your pocket. A couple of courses will typically set you back around 20-25 euros a head, including a bottle of the aforementioned reds which in the UK would cost you more than the per capita charge just for the wine alone.
Go visit them - you will not be disappointed with the welcome you get from the Biancos and their excellent staff.
And Nicola and Angela, if you read this, we'll be in Matera again soon - keep us a table.

We ate here with our family of 5 in April 2014. The host was very nice. We asked him to serve us cuisine 'locale' and he treated us to the very best tastes in Basilicata. The house wine was fantastic and the large house appetizer was amazing. We were very glad we chose to eat here for dinner one night. The owner speaks fluent English and French in addition to Italian.
