“A memorable stay”

This old house has been beautifully converted to provide very well-furnished and comfortable rooms and is full of character, reflecting the style and taste of the owner, who welcomes the traveller with charm, hospitality and vivacity. Car parking outside in the street, but the house is at the end of town and away from the tourist throng.

We arrived at 1a.m. and woke up half a Matera to get us accomodation. Finally we ended up at Casastella. We stayed just one night but our kids loved that place and we had a great time, The most interesting place for our kids was huge and beautiful bathroom. This BB has atmosphere and the owner is very friendly. In case u want to take a ride around Matera ask a son of the owner. He takes u around in riksha and whats the most important he speaks english.

This B&B is operated by a mother and son duo, and they are one of the warmest and most friendly people we have met in our trip. The mom is a adorable, Andrea(her son) is absolute class, while Paulo(her other son) is hilarious and chilled out.

Andrea gave us the best room in the place (The one below) and it was absolutely stunning. The view overlooked the valley and was gorgeous, and bathroom was absolutely amazing (My wife still talks about it). The place is a renovated Sassi, and beautifully maintained, with amazing host's. The breakfast was scrumptious, with savory and sweet goodies some of which was made by Andrea's mom. A must stay!!!

This place is marvellous.

The host family is friendly. Met the mother and her son, both speak English and they can introduce you to places to eat and give you other recommendations.

Free welcome coffee and Italian liquor. Breakfast with breads, juice and coffee, but no hot dish.

The gem of this place is, of course, the room.

We stayed in one of the suites with two rooms, one on the upper and one on the lower level. The upper level comes with a double bed and a sofa bed. The room on the lower level is one with two single beds. The one at the upper level is slightly bigger, and the bathroom is at the same level. At most, it can sleep four people.

Both rooms have a little window that is facing the ravine/ gorge. Nice views but somehow tainted by the mosquito net in between. The lower level room's view is blocked by the trees.

The bathroom is the absolutely stunning. It is in a cave. It was a cistern in the past and you could still see the watermarks on the walls. It looks so beautiful and taking a shower there is a treat. The bathroom comes with heater, hot water, candles and other modern things, and it is nicely restored. It is also a big one, that is even larger than the bedroom. Come see it yourself!

The downside of this hotel is that I find it a bit far from the centre of the ancient town, and not exactly in the Sassi. You have to walk and walk, and not that close if you are bringing your luggage. But following Via Casalnuovo, then turn to Via Bruno Buozzi and you can get to Sasso Caveoso, perhaps in 20 minutes then you could reach Plazza San Pietro Caveoso. This place is closer to the Matera Sud Train Station than the Matera Centro. I saw a bus stop about 3-4 minutes on another street (Via Lucana) but didn't check where the bus goes to.

My value for money rating here is based on a low season discount price.

Room Tip: People who have problem with walking or going on stairs might find it difficult to go to the suite I...

This was a beautiful modern restored historic building that was an original Sassi (stone) and its character was retained. What a beauty. It overlooked the ravine and original cave dwellings. Parking was available on the street. It was a 10 to 15 minute walk to the historic area of the city. An unbelievable ancient city to see. Our room was upstairs off the breakfast and foyer area. The room with it's limestone walls and ceiling was a site to be seen. Andreas and his mother were so personable, friendly, and helpful where to visit and places to eat. Breakfast was sweets, fresh fruits, and juices. It was a good spot to visit Matera, the Unesco Heritage Site.

Very hospitable lodgings, close to the sassi and not too difficult to find. Our room was very clean and in the severe style associated with the region, i.e., rock arches and white walls and a magnificent view of the ravine. Hosts were friendly, one of whom was our guide in his motorized cart, which we discovered is a much more comfortable way to travel as opposed to hiking up and down the hills. On-street parking was available as long as you didn't park in front of the neighbor's door. We used the opportunity to practice (not perfect) our Italian and had no difficulties getting around. As for getting something to eat (breakfast is excellent), may I recommend Speedy Gonzales, two blocks toward town between Casal Nuova and Via Lucana. Not the world's best pizza but actually pretty good and a neighborhood favorite. It took me 30 minutes to get my order (most are called in), but I spent the time watching Italian families in a normal setting. Most interesting, even if you have to choose among 50 varieties.

We came for three nights. The B&B located inside SASI with not more then 20 minutes’ walk to all attraction in Sasi. The house and room are very convenient and marvelously decorated. The family that own and operate the house are very friendly and helpful with everything. Andrea, the young son know English very good which helped a lot during our stay there.
