“Stunning Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 June 2014

This is one special hotel with just 20 rooms in a former palace previously owned and lived in by Count Gattini who was a former mayor of Matera. Guests are provided with a wonderful informative booklet on the hotel situated right opposite the Duomo in the historic centre. Our beautifully appointed room was massive - separate bedroom with very comfortable bed, living area, huge bathroom and a balcony overlooking the "sassi". High quality toiletries, fridge with cool drinks, 2 TVs, safe, plenty of coat hangers, table and chairs, a couch all made our 2N stay most enjoyable. The breakfast is served down in the cellar area with charming staff taking care of the guests. There is a roof terrace with table and chairs overlooking the "sassi" area. Views are amazing. Staff are excellent and very helpful.

This was a very pleasant surprise and what a excellent hotel. Everything was 1st class. Staff. Rooms & restaurant. I would recommend to anyone who wants a unique stay. The staff arranged a tour of area with a local professor then put us in touch wth a taxi for trip to a nearby town.

Very professional and corteous service, amazing location to visit Matera. Terrace on Sasso Caveoso with stunning view. Built in an old aristochratic palace by the Duomo. Quality at 360 degrees, and prices right for what they deliver. I would come back.

Fantastic four night stay during New Year's week!!! As many reviewers have already mentioned, the service at this immaculate hotel was excellent! We had a room on the top floor which had a great view of the Sassi just beyond the cathedral. -and like a cathedral, the magnificent brick ceiling in our room must've been 25 feet high!
Elegant furnishings all around... Amazing breakfast buffet in the cave-like basement (made-to-order eggs, ground whole oranges for juice, tons of pastries and wonderful service there as well)... And a great location for exploring Matera!
We spent New Years Eve at the incredible hotel restaurant. To give an idea of how fantastic this four hour meal/event was; when the chef entered the dining room to greet guests, he received a standing ovation!
Things I thought might be helpful to know:
Yes as many have stated, it's not easy to find this hotel at first. Our GPS was pretty much worthless among the closed off squares and one way streets of Matera. But once there, the car is valet parked and you're cares are gone!
There is a beautiful spa on premises but no fitness facility. The online hotel info indicates "health club" but that is referring only to the spa.
The temperature control in our room was centrally set from the front desk. We expected that might be problematic, but found it to be very comfortable. It certainly helped that the beds and linens were heavenly!
We hope to return to Matera and Palazzo Gattini again one day.

You won't find it easily if you don't know exactly where it is, but once there you'll immediately appreciate the warm atmosphere of an exceptional - but quite invisible - location. Steps, stairs, painted vaults are perfectly merged with contemporary design. No excess but class. Every detail is clearly under control, inside rooms as in public areas. Our double (212) was large, confy, and perfectly equipped as you might expect in a 5-star hotel, with a wide marble bathroom. Close to our room there is a roof terrace with a stunning view above Sasso Caveoso. Staff is very professional and helping, just ask! But the real masterpiece is the breakfast, served in 3 different tables: fresh pastries and cakes, as you might find in the best pastry shop, fresh fruit, selected jams, different kind of breads, orange squeeze (not juice), and typical South-Italy salty food (pizza, taralli, burrata, smoked ham, exc.). Staff was great, at your complete disposal, suggesting the best choice for your need and taste. In my opinion, this hotel represents a perfect example of what a luxury hotel - located in an Italian historical center - should always be: history and art served with taste and mild manners.

This hotel was a bit difficult to find as there seem to be no straight roads in Matera. But once you visit this unbelievable city, you will see that this is a way of life. The Palazzo Gattini is one if the most immaculate hotels I've ever stayed in. And I've been to a lot of places. The staff was delightful and ever so helpful. They recommended Mr Zasa as our tour guide and he made the trip as we learned so much about he history
The spa inside the hotel was glorious and inviting. I cannot recommend a hotel more highly than this one. It is not to be missed.

Room Tip: Get a suite, if at all possible the bath tub is unbelievable!

For the English-speaking traveler who knows little Italian, I know it can be useful to know if you'll be communicating with hand signals when you travel. The front desk staff here all had some English--from very proficient to just enough to get by (but certainly better than my Italian) so communication was never a problem.

Now, that out of the way, everything else about this hotel was top notch from the service to the room to the location right next to a gorgeous, gorgeous view. The hotel provided amenities such as shampoo, conditioner, and a hair dryer, so travelers can pack lightly.

The room itself had a minibar, robes, slippers and water. Housekeeping was very discreet, the laundry/pressing service was professional and fast, and the front desk staff incredibly accommodating. I really don't have anything negative to say about the hotel, though some people might find the inability to climate control their rooms themselves a drawback (if you want the temp up/down you need to contact the front desk staff).

I 100% recommend this hotel to travelers visiting Matera.
