If only the air conditioning worked...

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 20 Jul 2019via mobile
Stayed for one night recently and the room was stunning. However our bed was on the mezzanine and it was very stuffy and hot up there. Try as we might we could not get the air conditioning panel to go below 24C and even then we couldn’t hear it working. We had to sleep with the doors wide open (a major concern as the balconies are linked to other bedrooms) but we had no choice late at night. We didn’t want to disturb reception or nearby guests as it was way past midnight. Unfortunately we were then woken by the bin lorry just after 5am. They were extremely loud. Breakfast was adequate and fresh. Lovely fresh orange juice. I would stay again but would check that the air conditioning worked properly first. Others in our group had no issues.

We only stayed one night and that was enough. This is certainly not a 5 star hotel. We booked a junior suite but it was dark and only had one window with no view. The bathroom was in the sitting area and there was nowhere to put toiletries or even anywhere to hang a towel . Dirty glasses were left and bins weren’t emptied at turn down . Breakfast was in a dark basement/ cave area with limited choice . My scrambled egg order was inedible as the eggs had been fried with no trimmings. There was hardly any fruit or cheese other than buffalo mozzarella. There was only one member of staff serving everybody and I suspect she also did the cooking.
Reception staff were quite helpful as was the guy who took us to our car when we left as parking isn’t available on site.
Another point is that on arrival we asked if we could have a drink and snack having endured a 3 hour drive to get there but the bar and restaurant were closed.. Surely a 5 star hotel should offer drinks and snacks 24/7? The only point in it’s favour is its central location next to the Duomo.
We paid 650 Euros for our one night stay and really didn’t think this was good value. This is a 3 star hotel at best !

Situated at the top of a hill at Piazza Duomo, I don't know where you would park a car.

The hotel is clean and comfortable, but is a 5 star "wannabe" and I'll give you a couple of examples. On check in one of the bedside lamps did not work, there was a pad of paper, but no pen, there was no information in the hotel room about the hotel and when asking at the front desk about bar and restaurant openings, you got different answers. The next day the bedside light hadn't been fixed nor was there a pen or pencil. Once I brought the deficiencies to their attention, the light had been fixed and a pen and pencil provided.

The housekeeping and breakfast staff were very friendly.

Donato at the front desk was better at his job than others.

With training, there is a lot of potential for this hotel.

Would I stay there again? Yes!

Ok, there are a few hiccups at this hotel which claims 5 Stars, however the majority of staff are friendly and helpful , and in the end changed our room.
Positives, spectacular views if you get a room with a terrace. What I would like to see change for international tourism. A better system for parking in garage, as we found the garage however no English speaking person available and wanted to charge, so we had to drive on further, find a park, until hotel came to rescue us, maybe an official email letter from hotel would help in future with language barrier.
No compendium in rooms, no room service Monday’s, not even a coffee, no room service after 8pm other days. Jug and coffee in one room not in other. No table or desk in original suite with pool. Lovely view however space in room very compact. Loved the second suite and would have booked that instead, however not marketed properly. It is what we look for in a suite, spacious plus terrace.
Our main issue with hotel is they have red mites on the terraces. We were very concerned at first discovering them especially as so many pigeons around, this is why we changed rooms. I’m not adverse to animals or wildlife being from Australia we are used to many. However mites/lice is a different matter, after numerous research we have concluded they are red clover mites, however they can be controlled and have never seen them ever throughout our travels. We have travelled Italy extensively at times more than 2 months. And we walked miles in this city and stopped many places none to be seen apart from this hotel. They ended up being on the terrace of the second room also, however with one more night decided not to complain. They can be properly managed with spray! Giving guests peace of mind and not carrying these mites internationally, or having a compendium with a warning to guests not to be concerned!
Would have loved to give 5 stars or 4 however I feel too many things that need to be addressed, to make a proper international 5/4 Stars especially for pricing. I am sure with time they would consider addressing these concerns for future international tourists.

Located right in the main square across from the cathedral, Palazzo Gattini was a great experience. Our room was quiet and comfortable. The staff was excellent, especially Roberto, who solved any issue that surfaced - he is amazing! Everything is within walking distance, but be aware that Matera requires lots of walking and many steps (and often no railings). Don’t miss Osteria de Casale for pizza (and other food) at night - you need a reservation! Matera is the third oldest city in the world and well worth a visit.

Can’t say enough about this wonderful small hotel! We were warmly greeted by Teresa at the front desk and shown to our lovely accommodations. Each room is unique, but all include comfortable beds and linens, bathroom amenities, large shower with great water pressure and seating areas. The included breakfast is fabulous, anything you could want to start the day, even their special toast with ricotta and honey. Location is fabulous with a rooftop space overlooking the historic sassi area. Walking distance to sightseeing, restaurants and shops. Highly recommend!
