Sextantio Albergo Diffuso is one of the finest and most unique hotel I have seen AND ever slept in. It used to be a CAVE where people used to live 100s of years ago. But don't get me wrong… This hotel was remodeled and restored and mind you, it took 4 years to update the fixtures, bath tub, heated flooring, cabinets etc and they made sure that the original structure were all the same from the original. I could not believe that sleeping surrounded by candles is really peaceful, relaxing and calming. I have to admit I don't want to leave my cave room because it is so clean and very unique.
It is just so HEAVENLY to sleep on the huge bed and very comfortable bedding and pillows. The smell of the bed sheet is so fresh that you just want to stay on the bed the entire day.

Also, they offer free breakfast which they all made from their very own kitchen. The food is very good. Now I must admit I better start eating Mediterranean food with just salad, freshly squeezed Orange Juice, excellent tasting CAPPUCCINO and meatless pizza. I am telling you, their food is very good. By the way, the Breakfast Room used to be the MONASTERY back in the days. So you're having a blessed breakfast meal each time you eat :)

The location is very good too. Matera is a safe place and you don't have to work about anything when you are in this location. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage City. The staff are very helpful and kind and are willing to spend time with their hotel guests. And above all, they speak EXCELLENT ENGLISH so it is much easier to communicate with regards to the history of Matera and of course, for directions.

YOU should try and see for yourself this beautiful and famous CAVE hotel… From what I've heard from the locals, one FAMOUS American ROCK STAR checked in here and was really impressed on how beautiful SEXTANTIO is :) See for yourself :) Happy Travels everyone :)

What an amazing experience in a truly unique hotel! If you are in the area, this is a can't miss hotel and city. The wonderful staff was truly helpful and kind. Wish we could have spent more than one night here, but so glad we were able to enjoy one terrific night there. As I said, simply amazing!

This was our fourth visit to Matera. We have stayed in two other hotels in the Sassi area of the city. We decided to try this one because of the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor. Because the hotels here are built into the rock, to make the rooms habitable they need dehumidifying equipment. Otherwise, without a dehumidifier,as in the case of room 20 at the Sextantio, the condensation and dampness are intolerable! Room 20 has a largish window which gets completely saturated with condensation, so much so that moss is growing on the inside of the windowframe! If you have to take this room, insist on a dehumidifier!
Other hotels in Matera are capable of providing dry, habitable rooms within the rock. Sextantio should be able to do this aswell.
Breakfast, by contrast, was a delicious array of fresh local produce. Full marks here. Staff were friendly and informative, especially the hotel porter. Shame about room 20.

This is a once in a lifetime experience. Our overall experience was spectacular. I can't say enough good things about staying here! The antique decor, heated floors, Phillip Stark bathtub, candlelit room, the service and the unbelievable cuisine -- GO GO GO!!

If it is available, you must also book the private dinner. The chef, Mariella, is as talented as she is lovely and kind. Make sure to arrive hungry, because you will want to finish everything she brings out and there is a LOT! Be sure to take her suggestions on wine and grappa.

We certainly fell more in love with each other as we fell in love with this location.

We spent several nights here back in September. I can still feel the unique atmosphere of the cave - this experience will stay with me for a very long time!

Taking a bath in the oval Phillip Stark bathtub, surrounded by the pock-marked stone and the hewn animal troughs was really something else and a wonderful way to recuperate after a hot day traversing the town. I did find the cave quite intense so staying for just a few days was perfect. There is also little private relaxation space (apart from the wonderful bathtub!) so, when we left, I was glad to move on somewhere with a little more soft furnishings.

But go if you can - this is a unique experience!!

Had a lovely night in one of the suites, a truly amazing space. The caves are decorated perfectly, the beds super comfortable and the bathtub delightful.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the continental breakfast was delicious the next day, an amazing ray of cheeses, breads and fruit. This was the highlight of our Puglia trip.

This Hotel is in a little town called Matera in the south of Italy. Long story but we were spending a week in Lecce and after 5 days there we wanted to try a new location. My wife asked around and came up with Matera. I drove there, about 60 miles, not a bad drive until we got to Matera. The hotel we were trying to find is in the old section of town called the Sassi, when I say old I mean old. It was founded by the romans in the 3rd century BC. The new part of town is like any other town in Italy, roads, buildings, etc. We started into the old section of town and immediately got lost. Our GPS had a meltdown but within a couple of minutes a man on a moped pulled up and stated he was from the town's tourism office, complete with an official looking badge and everything. We told him the name of our hotel and he said "follow me". We did follow him for about 4 blocksas the roads got more and more narrow until the alley we were in came to an end. The man said that our hotel was 500 meters down the stairs in front of usand assured me that it would be ok to leave our car where it was. My wife was not loving this and was very nervous thing the worse. I gave him a few Euros for his trouble, grabbed the backback and my wifes hand and started down the stairs, lots of stairs. True to his word, our hotel was right where he said it would be and our car was still where we left it when we got back to it. I tell you this part of the story so you will prepare, A GPS isn't enough, paper maps are the best bet. On to the hotel experience.
It was worth all of the grief it was to find it. The hotel is located on the edge of a cliff as is most of the old city. Most of the staff speaks good English and are very cheerful and helpful. While we here checking in, one of the staff ran up to prepare our "cave" all the rooms are original caves with plumbing and electric mostly lit by candle. The door to our "cave" was wood with an old skeleton key, a big one. I've never experienced anything like it. No shower but a very large tub at the edge of the bedroom, candlelight and this tub....very romantic. A king bed that was the most comfortable that we had on this trip of nearly 4 weeks. The staff set up a night walking tour of the area that we very much enjoyed til midnight. Wear comfy shoes with good tread on them because the dew of the evening make the cobblestone streets and the many, many steps quite slippery. This part of the town and the caves in the hill across from it was where Mel Gibson filmed a good portion of The Passion of the Christ. Breakfast in the morning is part of the cost of the room and is very good. It's served in a de-consecrated church also a cave. They also offer other activities that the hotel will set up. The other thing that they offer that I had set up was a private dinner for two in the old church with your own chef and will cook whatever you'd like. I let the chef choose the menu and wasn't disappointed. It was a very intimate experience and I believe it was 6 courses over a 3 hour period (8:00-11:00pm). I asked for local flowers for the table and my wife was delighted. Guys, This is a stay with all these activities that will make you big points with your love. My wife is still smiling. We were there 2 days and would have liked to have stayed another night or two. So expect to have trouble finding the placebut know it is so worth the headache. A bit pricey but once in a lifetime event, no regrets.

Room Tip: Make a reservation for sure. We were there in the off season so temp was 60f during the day and 40f...

Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in the Sassi di Matera - UNESCO World Heritage Site in Basilicata region - is the most extreme expression of a Historical Minor Heritage. A heritage, which represents the almost paradigmatic expression of this Minor History, marked by rocky caves, inhabited until the first years of the fifties. The sassi (stone settlement) have been turned into 18 romantic boutique bedrooms, simply furnished, candlelit and calming. Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is a cultural project born to bring hospitality experience outside the schematics, not classifiable as "stars" and far from any traditional concept of luxury, so much so that the New York Times deemed it one of “the most extraordinary destinations in the world”, the Times “one of the ten most beautiful hotels on the international scene” and the Tatler guide of Condé Nast has included among “the one hundred most beautiful hotels on the planet”. They talk about the luxury of emotions. ... more   less
