My wife and I recently stayed here for three days and overall were pleased with the cleanliness of the cave and everyone was incredibly friendly. We had a private cooking class one evening that was the highlight of our stay.

I believe that there are two measures of a hotel experience. The first is whether we would return as guests to the hotel. The second is whether we would recommend this hotel to our friends.

The answer to the first question is unfortunately no. These are the reasons for not wanting to return:

1. The dampness in the cave creates a smell that is extremely unpleasant. We had to keep our clothing in our suitcases because it was simply impossible to place any of our clothes in the closet. Every time we walked back into the cave, we grimaced. We had to hang all our clothing out in the open air at the next hotel to rid the clothing of the damp smell.

2. We asked repeatedly to have the air conditioner lowered to cool off below 22.5 centigrade (changes need to be made from the office, not your cave). Each time we were promised that it would be done and not once during our three day stay did the temperature go below 22.5 centigrade. It became a joke for us because we knew that they simply were telling us at the front desk that they would take care of it to make us feel better.

As for the second measure, if we are asked by friends we would tell them that it was an interesting experience and for those looking for a once in a life time experience it is worth trying, but we would explain the smell and the dampness and leave it to them to see if it was worth trying.

Dear Gary,

Thank you for taking the time to share your review on Tripadvisor and for staying with us at Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in Matera.

We are very sorry for the inconveniences happened during your stay. As we told you in person, unfortunately there was a damage to your room's electrical system that we have already fixed.

We apologize for that and we hope to have you again as our special guest.

Kind regards

Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita.

The best words used to describe this hotel are already in the reviews below. I have never been so awestruck by a place.

We stayed in room 19 for two nights. Nice quiet room, further up the hillside than the rest of the hotel. Big comfortable bed and a great bath in the room and shower and toilet separated by an old wooden wall. For such an old building, the detail attention to conversion to a hotel is faultless. Even the WiFi was great in the room!

Very friendly and helpful staff too. English very well spoken by reception staff. Matera is also a great place to visit. Good value food and drink in restaurants in the old town.

Room Tip: Room 19 is further up the hillside. Great view from the window. Nice oval bath. Private terrace. The 'cave' even has air-con!

I found this hotel on Trip Advisor and booked purely based on reviews. Matera was somewhere we wanted to visit as part of a trip exploring Puglia (Basilicata is neighbouring), but didn't know whether to visit for the day or stay overnight.

This hotel has to be the best hotel we have ever experiences. From start to finish, the place and staff have been amazing. It is fairly expensive but absolutely worth every penny! We booked a standard double room but managed an upgrade and the room was beautiful but from viewing a neighbours room - all are wonderful it seems. From the photos before we arrived I was expecting quality but didn't want to be disappointed. I had no need to worry, every thing was considered: attention to detail, quality. Authentic feeling caves, all unique with there own stories to tell. The philosophy of the Sextantio group is to preserve Italian history and life in perhaps hidden corners of Italy. Well done and so worth a visit!

My husband and I stayed at this beautiful hotel for two nights in early July. Firstly, it’s really hard to actually find despite having a sat nav. You have to really keep your eyes peeled for the hotel sign. On a good note the hotel will send you directions and pictures before you arrive, be sure to print these off and take them with you as they do help.

Upon arrival we were greeted by lovely and friendly staff who gave us a tour of the hotel and explained the history of the caves and that they have tried to keep everything within the hotel original. This includes lifting up the original floor stones, numbering them, installing under floor heating and putting the floor stones back in place. Most furniture is original and recycled also.

There are nine cave rooms in total and all I can say is wow. Our room had a bath and a shower, a very comfortable double bed, free water and fruit and was draped in wonderful candle light.

The room although dark as it only had one small window (as you would expect being a cave) was amazing and fully equipped with everything you need such as wifi. However, do not expect a TV or full length mirror. Believe it or not you will be so blown away with the beauty of this cave you won’t miss these things. Everywhere you look in this hotel there are signs of the past and a uniqueness that you can’t help falling in love with. I dare you not to lay in bed and look around you in awe.

The hotel hasn’t got the facilities for a restaurant so you will need to eat out, however, saying that breakfast was a superb buffet of treats.

In terms of Matera, I feel the food in this region was one of the best I have experienced in Italy and it was extremely reasonable in price also.

There are also lots of breath taking views to be had so don’t forget your camera and whatever you do please please please do not forget your sensible shoes. I wore flip flops one day and yep, you guessed it I fell down and landed smack bang on my knee.

Just a point to note in case you were wondering, this hotel and town is not ideal for disabled access, in fact you would struggle altogether.

To summarise, this hotel is an amazing experience, two nights wasn’t enough as I wished we’d stay longer. The staff were fantastic, the hotel is very worthy of it’s awarded five stars. I don’t really have any negatives. If you are pondering on whether to stay here or not – do it as you won’t regret it.

We will definitely be returning soon.

Room Tip: Request a bath tub room as you get both bath and shower

Wow there have been some odd reviews on here...

It is important to remember that you are booking into a unique experience... Y'know.. A cave...

Caves aren't equipped with all mod cons and sofas... It would kind of take away from the experience if they were all provided.

Having said this, you will not go without. We stayed in cave 10 as part of a tour of Italy for our Honeymoon. It was beautiful, rustic, authentic, atmospheric and cleverly formed.

The bathroom with a sunken egg shaped bath was very comfortable. The shower room was fantastic and our bed very comfortable.

The main city sits a few minutes walk up from the complex and yet you feel very remote when gazing out onto the stunning views.

The only thing we were underwhelmed by after reading reviews was breakfast. Not a big fan of cakes and pastries resembling pizza and although the ladies who put on the breakfast were pleas at, the system in place of you want toast/coffee/ even a glass for orange juice or milk for your cereal - it's all a little disjointed.

All in all though a unique experience and one we are glad we took especially seeing as all the staff are excellent!

We would also recommend the authentic Italian cooking experience at the hotel.

We learnt how to create all kinds of genuine authentic Italian cuisine with the brilliant Stefania and this was then followed by a meal just for us in the converted church, where Stefania finished off what we started and served it to us. Highly recommend and thank you Stefania!
