Location! One of the Matera cave hotels, nicely located in the Sassi Caveoso, a short walk from the restaurants. We spent two nights at the hotel exploring the city with its many cozy streets and alleyways. No lack of comfort in the rooms, but don't expect a gym or swimming pool here. Good breakfast with a selection of fresh, local items. We liked the home-made foccacia.
The hotel is located beyond the main church but you cannot go there by car as it is located at the end of a narrow street. You have to leave your vehicle on one of the car parks about half a km away and arrange a pick-up by the hotel staff. We booked our room via www.booking.com and following our reservation we promptly received an e-mail from the hotel with all the info on how to reach and contact them once you are in the Sassi. When you arrive here for the first time, it may seem quite a maze of streets and buildings.
Despite the lack of luxury (the rooms are comfy though as mentioned before), this is probably one of the best hotels we stayed: nice location and views and terrific staff!
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- The hotel is located in the heart of Sasso Caveoso, Matera. There are eleven large rooms with independent access and all the modern technological comforts. They are partly built and partly caved out of the local tufa stone. They evoke the fascination of the prehistoric caves that you can see from the windows on the opposite Murgia plateau, site of the Archaelogical Park of Rupestrian Churches. ... more less
