“Perfect hotel in picturesque Sassi”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

Location! One of the Matera cave hotels, nicely located in the Sassi Caveoso, a short walk from the restaurants. We spent two nights at the hotel exploring the city with its many cozy streets and alleyways. No lack of comfort in the rooms, but don't expect a gym or swimming pool here. Good breakfast with a selection of fresh, local items. We liked the home-made foccacia.

The hotel is located beyond the main church but you cannot go there by car as it is located at the end of a narrow street. You have to leave your vehicle on one of the car parks about half a km away and arrange a pick-up by the hotel staff. We booked our room via www.booking.com and following our reservation we promptly received an e-mail from the hotel with all the info on how to reach and contact them once you are in the Sassi. When you arrive here for the first time, it may seem quite a maze of streets and buildings.

Despite the lack of luxury (the rooms are comfy though as mentioned before), this is probably one of the best hotels we stayed: nice location and views and terrific staff!

We would highly recommend the Hotel Basiliani in Matera. My wife and I, both in our early 60’s, stayed four nights.

It is a beautiful location in the Old Town (Sassi), which is a UNESCO heritage site . We would open our room door each day to a beautiful panorama of a river gorge with tall cliffs across the river containing Neolithic caves dwellings, which are part of an Archeological Park and also a component of the Heritage site.

It was an easy walk through the entire Sassi area and a modestly longer one to many of the New Town’s shops and restaurants. We were sincerely taken by the vitality of the town, including its regular “passegiata”, or “walk and talk” activities that involve large numbers of town residents strolling and visiting with each other in the afternoons and evenings in the large central plaza.

Thought some of its rooms are built into the cliffs on the Sassi side of the gorge, the hotel is totally modernized. We had a huge room with four beds (two in a loft), and a good sized bathroom with full sized soaking tub and shower. We had good hot water throughout our stay and good wifi connectivity.

The breakfast that came with the room was a generous, varied buffet. The staff members were all very nice and went out of their way to do some small extras for us.

We would highly recommend this hotel, which we felt was modestly priced (at least in March) for its quality.

The basiliani was a unique hotel. The rooms were spacious (I was surprised to see that we had a loft in our room with two extra beds!). It is a short walk to the hotel on a rocky surface, I suggest a back pack or light duffel. The maps the hotel provided via e-mail were fantastic. The breakfast was plentiful with lots of fresh fruit. There are patio chairs outside each room a good place to sit and read and lookout at the park across the ravine. I would stay here again.

We stayed at this hotel in February and it was great. The rooms were very clean, the fastest wifi I've seen, the location was amazing, and the breakfast in the morning was great. Overall we had a great time in Matera and this hotel was great.

Very unique experience. The cave room has modern, minimalist design but is large and quite comfortable.
There is a bit of humidity, but running the dehumidifier during the day was enough to make things comfortable when we were home in the evenings.
Great location--- easy, free parking approx 500 m away. The Sassi are an amazing, almost other worldly site. Worth the trip!

This is a lovely hotel in a unique site. Our room was very spacious, bright, clean and comfortable. It was not in the cave like some others are and we had no problem with
humidity. The location in the Sasso Caveoso, facing the Gravina, is fantastic and we had a
nice view even from our bed! Wi-fi is available and in the lobby there is a computer for the guests. Breakfast is adequate. The staff were very, very, very nice and
helpful. Very good value for money.

The rooms are built into the cave - very atmospheric and romantic. Also huge! My husband and I were given a room with an upstairs lodge and 2 separate bathrooms. Very comfortable bed and funky amenities. The only negative is that, due to being built into the cave, it is a little damp so you need to have the heating on or wear a sweater. The staff were very friendly, meeting us in town to escort us to the hotel, very patient with our questions and even parked our car for us as they told us we would probably be fined for leaving it where we had. Breakfast was simple yet tasty and the staff treated us like old friends without crossing the professional boundary. I do not hesitate in recommending this hotel. Well-worth the price!!
