Loved it, it was where the Passion of Christ with Mel Gibson was filmed and it really looked like something from the age of Christ. nicer still as there werent many tourists around on a tuesday in May, we had the place to ourselves.

We were not expecting anything so pretty as the town hardly features on any tourist maps but there were old cave dwellings, some still lived in, a bit like a smaller version of Matera.

The Civita stands between the two "Sassi" and hosts the beautiful Cathedral, many old and beautiful buildings, and a lot of alleys where you can get lost and enjoy the atmosphere untile when you find a stairway that will bring you down either to Sasso Caveoso or to Sasso Barisano.
It is connected with the modern area so you'll find here also bars and shops, things you won't find in the Sassi.

Visiting Matera is a unique experience: the caves and old tuff houses of the Sassi create a landscape almost unique in the world, and an incredible atmosphere: I've experienced something similar only in Kappadokia.
Be prepared to walk a lot, to climb and descend but be surte you'll be fascinated by the visit.
