Excellent creative food. Pasta dishes and main course dishes differed to the traditional italian food served in the majority of restaurants. Food different and delicious. .

This place must have gone done hill recently to have the high TA rating that it does and serve food that we had there. Like other reviewers, we were sent here by a local person with no hidden agendas; he said that L'abbondanza "does something special with local ingredients." What has happened? Has the chef left?
The restaurant is located in one of the pretty, renovated caves of Matera, with whitewashed, barrel ceilings. We were a little put off by the furnishing...chairs pretentiously draped in white covers...but that's a matter of taste. There are no house wines.
We were given an antipasto of mashed chickpeas with a piece of red pepper as garnish: OK, but not memorable. We ordered lamb chops and a rabbit dish, and both arrived looking like an unappetizing pile of brown meat with incongruous decorations on the edges of the plates . The quality of the meat in both was poor, filled with gristle and poorly seasoned. Service was cold.
We ordered no more and left as quickly as we could after that course. Don't waste your time and money here; try one of Matera's many other delicious restaurants, like the nearby Trattoria del Caveoso.

We went to this restaurant because it was recommended to us by a reputable source in Matera and it has great reviews online. We ordered still water, were served sparkling mineral water instead (we did not say anything, our waitress did not speak any english). We ordered white wine, were served red (we did ask to have the red replaced with a white and it was taken care of). We had to ask for the bottle to be placed in ice. None of this is a big deal, we were in a foreign country and could not speak their language so it is mostly our fault so far. Our waitress was replaced with a waiter that could speak some english. We ordered pasta, it was spectacular! Maybe the best we ever had.
Then our entrees arrived, mine the lamb, my wife's the pork medallions. The lamb had a sizable black hair sticking out of it. One of my wife's pork medallions was served raw. This was the first one she took a bite of, not a good experience. She also had a bite of my lamb (the piece with the hair). She pushed the uncooked pork aside and finished the rest of the meal which was cooked properly. I pushed aside the portion of lamb with the hair and finished the rest of my meal. We were seated in the very back of the restaurant out of sight of anyone and our waiter did not visit our table once until we were finished. There was no real reason for this as it was early and the restaurant was empty. When he finally showed up, he asked how everything was and we explained the problems. We let him know we were not happy. He immediately explained that there was no problem, the hair was not from the cook or the waiter, it was from the lamb. We told him we did not care WHERE it came from, it should not have been on our plate. He took our plates, including the uncooked pork, and returned to the kitchen. The cook came to our table and we explained the entire story to him. He apparently had not seen the uncooked pork and he also gave us the same explanation about the "lamb hair". Now this "lamb hair" was exactly the same color, length and shape of the cooks. He offered to make the meals over again for us (would you accept that even if you were still hungry?). We declined and let him know how serious we thought it was to serve raw pork, that it was dangerous. He then began waving his arms and talking very excitedly in a defensive manner. He did not seem concerned that some of the pork was served RAW. I don't know what he said, but I could tell by his body language that somehow ALL of this was our fault.
The waiter brought our check for the full amount. We paid it, no tip.
In retrospect, we should have gotten up from our table, tracked down the waiter and had the meals replaced as soon as they were served (or we should have gotten up and gone somewhere else). Lesson learned. Regardless of all the positive reviews, I will recommend that you AVOID THIS RESTAURANT! We have traveled extensively for many years and this is the first time I have ever posted a negative review on any restaurant.
BTW, there are many exceptional restaurants in Matera, try Ristorante Francesca or, for a positively outstanding, memorable experience, try Baccanti, WOW.

Eating at Abbondanza Lucana in Matera, in the region of Lucania, Italy was like eating in a food paradise inside of stone cave walls. The owner Francesco Abbondanza's hospitality is supreme. Francesco has a tight connection to his land and his local food is taken to a higher elegant status.
The ambient is elegant but comfortable. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Although highly-rated and recommended, we did not enjoy our evening. Although the restaurant is well appointed and the staff well-groomed, the service is completely over-the-top. An over-effusive welcome, followed by a bombardment of advice about the menu before one had a chance to study it for oneself. The food was OK, well-presented but not exceptional. Our least satisfactory meal during our time in Southern Italy.
