“A Most Unusual Property”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2014

Locanda di San Martino is located in the old section (Sassi) of Matera and it actually is a rebuilt series of cave dewllings. Matera is a Unesco site that resembles Jerusalem in biblical times. (Several biblical based movies have been filmed here.) Each room is different but each is built in what was, at one time, was a cave dwelling, some as late as 1968. The rooms are small as might be expected but they are clean and very unique. The bath facilities were excellent. There is no food served on site but there are two excellent restaurants right out the front door, one a short walk to the left and the other to the right.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the second or third floor so that you have the outer balconey areas and the vie...

Consistency continues with the reviews on friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. The room was very spacious as far as the bedroom goes. The restaurant was closed during our stay and we did not get to take advantage of the spa. The location was so perfect. This is one our best stays in Italy.

*The Junior Suite had a Junior Shower, it was probably the smallest shower I have ever seen in all of my travels. I'm a round person, so if I was to drop the soap, I would have had to slide the glass door to bend down to pick it up. This would not prevent me from wanting to stay here again.

I would love to try the restaurant, but just across the way a bit is a fantastic place to eat.

Friendly and helpful staff greeted us and directed us to our spacious room and bath inside the "sassi" of Matera. The room was spotless, comfortable and right in the historical area. The public rooms are welcoming and the breakfast (included) delicious. While we aren't really "spa" people, it was great to enjoy the sauna, steam room, and unique pool (yes, lap swim possible) meandering underground through the cave. Don't know what it would be like with lots of people but three of us spend more time than we thought enjoying the warm water in November.

Room Tip: Specify if you cannot do stairs. There is an elevator to several rooms. Despite being in the caves o...

Matera in Basilicata is definitely worth a visit! And this is just the place to stay overnight. You stay in one of the remodeled "sassy" (home caves). The food in this city is so deliciously prepared and I guarantee that you will have one of your best dinners in all of Italy. The bread alone is to die for.
The breakfast at Locanda di San Martino is outstanding. And then one of the pianists from the conservatory of Matera plays beautiful romantic melodies while you're having breakfast. We stayed two nights, because we wanted to take our time and see all the ancient monuments, churches and discoveries.

Room Tip: We had a room with a window; some of the rooms didn't have a window, but they had porches out th...

Very pleased with the experience staying here. Must say one might need to be in good physical form when allocated one of the higher up rooms. There are steps involved after the elevator ride to the 2nd level. However, the view is fabulous. We might not have gotten the most spacious room but it was certainly adequate. Did not have time to use the spa even if it were opened as there was too much else to see and experience. Very nice cavelike hotel experience!
The service was polite and breakfasts ample.

This hotel is largely made out of redeveloping historic cliff caves that indigenous people lived in 100's of years ago. Lest you think you are going to have to rough it, not true. Our room and those of several of the people we were traveling with were very comfortable with good views of the charming town of Matera. The bathroom was quite commodious with a large shower. The Italian continental breakfast was on the upper end, and the dining room was delightfully big and comfortable. We didn't use the spa, but it looked quite appealing. Access to rooms was by outdoor walkways, which in some cases involved a little climbing after getting out of the elevator.

Room Tip: Because there are so many different sized rooms, spend time with hotel reservations in picking one t...

Despite booking almost a year in advance we arrived at the Locanda San Martino to find the spa was closed. It seems to me the hotel could have shown the courtesy of sending me an email to let me know since the SPA is on the cover of their brochure! Other issues with the hotel:
1. The bed was the smallest possible - my feet hung over the end by 6" (and I am 5-10") and was so narrow you could hardly roll over without clinging the bed.
2. The breakfast quantity was fine but the quality was not there. Many of the cornetti were at least a day old.
3. The room was very musty smelling
