“Amazing Hotel”

Matera was arguably the highlight of our southern Italy, off-the-beaten-path family vacation and this hotel was a treat. Family with two teenage boys and a mother-in-law loved our short stay here. I have never seen anything like it. So unusual. They helped find us a wonderful guide who gave us a very interesting tour of the town and it's history. Highly recommend a visit to Matera (as well as Alborabello to stay in the Trulli).

The locanda di San Martino is actually a boutique hotel, hiding itself from the crowds under a 3 stars rating. This beautifull hotel is actually built on different storeys of the Sassi in MAtterra historical part, just 50 meters udner the main square of the old town and the famous underground reservoir.

The hotel is made out of about 30 room made into old dwellings (all original) equipped with the latest needs and technologies (including wif).

Every room has its own name, based on the dwelling original specifics and all rooms are facing the amazing view on the Sassi.

You can walk from a room to another one, or on the hotel private terraces; The hotel visit is an exploration of the Sassi on itself, and you will be going thru the original streets, that still connect part of the higher sassi to the lower valley part.

This is the best place where to have a real local experience. Beyond the rooms, and the optimal service you will receive there, you will find the amazing spa, located underground, in 3 old huge water cisterns built hundreds yeasr ago, where the hotel did set a 25 meter long swimming pool, entirely underground and all the amenities you can dream of in a spa.

The spa is organised according the Roman tradition in different zones, and temperatures, going from relaxing mild temperature, to jaccuzi and sauna, several showers along the iniatiting path.

The hotel is offering an incredible breakfast table, in a dedicated breakfast room, itself an old dwelling carved into the hill (massive one), where you will have the choice between Italian and continental delicacies. Delightfull.

If you go to Matera this is THE place where to stay, and take your time to enjoy one of the most beautifull spa I have ever tried worlwide. No kidding.

Off season, parking isnt an issue, and you can park few undred meters away from the hotel, the receptionnist will help you where to leave your car without having an issue in the morning. During peak season, the hotel is offering to its guest a parking service for a regular fee (appreciable seeing the situation in Mattera)

We will definitely come back, only for this hotel. Thank you to the owner for making our stay an amazing experience.

Room Tip: Some rooms have even a small private terrace, book accordingly, so in the evening you can relax on c...

My husband and I stayed at this hotel originally for 2 nights only but after the first night we decided to stay a third night as it was that nice! When we arrived we were shown 3 rooms to choose from which was no problem at all for the friendly staff there! We chose room 17 which was described by the manager as being 'piu grotta' or more cave like! It was a beautiful room and very spacious and romantic! The tv was dodgy but we weren't really in the room that much to be watching it as there was lots to do and look at in the city! The terrace out the front of the room offered beautiful views of the sassi of matera which we enjoyed looking at every night while having a cup of tea and the breakfast every morning was very good with views down to the pool below through glass panels :)
The location was great but the best part of the hotel was the amazing cave pool and jacuzzi which even tho you had to pay extra for was definitely fantastic to relax in after a few big days of hiking around the hills of matera! Absolutely blissful and if I am lucky enough to ever return to this beautiful city I will definitely stay here again!

Very lovely hotel in a spectacular location within the magical town of Matera.
Reception was so nice to us, helped us get rid of our car for a very reasonable fee, pick up the car, parking while we are here and will deliver it when we are ready to leave. believe me, when I say that is very nice indeed because driving in the town is not easy.
They also gave us a larger room when I requested it although I had reserved the smaller room. And they recommended a very delicious local restaurant for dinner.

The hotel is quite beautiful and the bed is firm and comfortable. Breakfast was good and is served in a nice big room which also has comfortable sitting area where you can sit and read and use wifi. Wifi also works well in the room.

This is your hotel in Matera!

We stayed here for my birthday and it was lovely. The attraction was the underground pool and thermal spa. We stayed with my husband and my sister and mother. It was lovely and close to some lovely places to eat and shopping at the top of the hill.

Locanda di San Martino is located in the old section (Sassi) of Matera and it actually is a rebuilt series of cave dewllings. Matera is a Unesco site that resembles Jerusalem in biblical times. (Several biblical based movies have been filmed here.) Each room is different but each is built in what was, at one time, was a cave dwelling, some as late as 1968. The rooms are small as might be expected but they are clean and very unique. The bath facilities were excellent. There is no food served on site but there are two excellent restaurants right out the front door, one a short walk to the left and the other to the right.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the second or third floor so that you have the outer balconey areas and the vie...

Consistency continues with the reviews on friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. The room was very spacious as far as the bedroom goes. The restaurant was closed during our stay and we did not get to take advantage of the spa. The location was so perfect. This is one our best stays in Italy.

*The Junior Suite had a Junior Shower, it was probably the smallest shower I have ever seen in all of my travels. I'm a round person, so if I was to drop the soap, I would have had to slide the glass door to bend down to pick it up. This would not prevent me from wanting to stay here again.

I would love to try the restaurant, but just across the way a bit is a fantastic place to eat.
