What a unique and unusual experience! I loved my little cave room... It was clean and comfortable. I loved the little lights in the floor, it gave it such warm glow at night. The decor is simple but elegant. Considering this was a cave with only the entry door for windows it wasn't dark or gloomy at all. The white walls and linens made for a romantic and cozy ambiance. The temperature was just right, and it was not dank or musty smelling. Other rooms may have issues with moisture seeping thru the walls but mine was perfect. Hotel restaurant is fabulous! And drinks on the bar terrace, with a view to die for...

We thought we would stay here as a novel place to stay in a beautiful part of Italy. The hotel is well situated in the old district of the town, once out of the modern side of Matera it is a very nice town. The room was built into a cave and had some very original features, but we were disapointed with the damp smell that never went away and the rock hard beds. We would have explained this to recption when we left, but we weren't even asked if we enjoyed our stay... The restaurant was nice with good food, but very over priced and under staffed.

I had 5 days in Sassi I July. The location was great. I had a room with a view to the square in front if the hotel. The service at the hotel was very good and the the price of the rooms are fair. The hotel restaurant is very good but relative expensive.... I recommend this hotel....

Positive about the hotel: very good location in the middle of the Sassi (old town), nice bed, original room in a cave, good breakfast and very nice bar with great view at the sunset

Negative about the hotel: room quite humid (some foam on the walls!), tiny bathroom and expensive overall compared to other properties at the same season

Room Tip: Al rooms are different but the 62 is not the best for sure!

We booked at the sister hotel Casa Di Lucio, but that reception was closed (due to a storm the week before we were told). Not much of a problem, but a tip: don't carry your luggage up the many stairs to Casa di Lucio until you are sure you stay there ;)
The room was a spacious cave. lovely lighting. of course, no windows, but the door provides enough daylight. We were in Matera in mid summer (40 degrees centigrade...) and a cave provides a great coolness...
The hotel is accessible by car. We asked and we could park on the town square. so, all in all a great place to stay. Not for people less able to walk...(but that goes for all the town)

Our stay was a mixed experience: We had booked at the sister hotel Casa di Lucio, but as they obviously didn't have many bookings we were assigned a room in the supposedly more expensive Sant' Angelo.
The booked Junior suite in a cave was very nice at first sight: spacious, comfortable, with daybed, big bathtub in the back (unfortunately no jacuzzi). First disadvantage of being in a cave if it's not in the middle of real summer: It is a bit damp inside, but if you leave the door open a while, it gets better. On second sight, we saw some dirt in the room - behind the daybed and the moskito net over the real bed looked like it hadn't been washed in a year.
That leads to the real failures: The outdoor areas throughout the whole hotel are not being cleaned at all: cushions of the outdoor chairs are filthy, dirty and full of bird [--] (there are a lot of birds), tables are not being cleaned either.
The outdoor breakfast area was the same, but it was too cold and windy to have breakfast inside, so they set up the "room" in a small cave somewhere at the backside of the restaurant (not at the beautiful front, where tables were set for dinner, which I am sure, noone ever had there).
So in that small room it was the same: dirt on the table clothes - the same stains on the same table both times we had breakfast there, also stains on all chair covers).
Preheated eggs is the only egg selection and on the first day, they were completely cold. the rest of the buffet is not very inviting: jams are not filled up, fruits rot for days.

All in all this would be a nice hotel, but obviously the management is not able to offer the standard this hotel is supposed to have. The place is really run-down, I don't understand the raving reviews from around the same time we stayed there, maybe some people are blind to dirt.
Every 3-star-hotel has higher standards of cleanliness.

Last disadvantage: On the day we left, there seemed to be a problem with the canalization: We woke up from a disgusting smell coming out of the sinks and left as soon as we had everything packed. It was unbearably to even stay in the bath area for two minutes.

In Matera, we wanted to book Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita, but it was fully booked for the 2 nights we were there. Therefore, we booked at Sant'Angelo, believing that we would have a cave bedroom, as Booking.com mentions "It is housed in original cave-like dwellings." Unfortunately, we were accommodated in a normal house, beautifully designed, beautiful view, but not a cave. I explained our disappointment at the reception, and the lady answered that that night all the cave rooms were fully booked and that for the day later, they would see what they could do. We didn't hear anything anymore, either positive or negative...
Checking in at 14.00, we have been told that to get someone helping to carry our suitcase up (a lot of steps! and we are not from the youngest) to the room, we would have to wait up to 16.00 / 16.30!
Asking for a map of the city, we've been answered by the receptionist to ask at the info point on the square. We've been surprised to see at check out that they had a pile of map at the reception!
The bar, on top of the hotel, was supposed to be open from 17.00. We went around 18.30 and it was still closed (and again, climbing many steps, for nothing!).
The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, but the food and service are not at the level of the design.
As we didn't want to leave Matera with that in our memory, we added one night and spent it at Le Grotte della Civita (where we found a room as it wasn't the week-end anymore!) and have been so amazed! No comparison at all.

Room Tip: Mention on your booking if you want to sleep in a cave!
