“Lovely Stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 August 2014

We stayed here in August 2014 for a week as a family of 4, two daughters 14 and 10. The youngest enjoyed the pool, the eldest enjoyed the wifi, we the parents enjoyed the tranquility. The room was lovely, we stayed on the ground floor. The main bed was segregated from a sofa bed, dining table and kitchen by a breakfast bar. There was plent of storage space. There was one bathroom which had a nice power shower. There was also a washing machine in there. The kitchen was well facilitated. There was an iron but no board, and a large fridge/freezer. The room kept lovely and cool without the windows being opened or having to have the air con on. And only on occasion did we need a blast from the air con. On the final couple of nights the girls found the sofa bed very uncomfortable, and we had them in our bed. I had to change the sleeping alignment which helped. I should have mentioned this to the staff who were very approachable and helpful, but I didn't.
There didn't appear to be a dedicated outside table for the apartment like some others, however we never had a problem sitting around a table to have a spot of lunch. The pool is well designed for the space and large enough for children to play in, a bit small for lengths. The area around the pool was OK, it was grassed, and when full couldn't accomodate everyone if they wanted to sunbathe. The sun shone on the area from around 10 am to 5pm.
The location of the apartments was good. Far enough away for us from the hoards. Amalfi isn't so big that it takes long to walk to the Duormo or port. And it's such a nice walk, especially at night through the small corridors, like secret passages housing tavernas and pizzarias. For the walkers amongst us it's at the start of the walk up the west hills and the walk to Pontone-to-Scala-to-Ravello. Don't let them tell you that these are easy walks, they are climbs! Albeit lovely views.
All-in-all this was our first main suaree into Italy and we fell in love with the place. The people and places are beautiful, and the passion and sheer enthusiasm was infectious.

Room Tip: Our room was on the ground floor and the bedroom window was facing the main road. There seemed to be...

A wonderfully located, well equipped and beautifully presented room.
The apartment is slightly off the Main Street which adds to the peaceful atmosphere. It is set behind a large stunning door which reveals gardens, a pool and incredible views of the hills and mountains surrounding Amalfi.
A wonderful welcome was received and the street to the main town has fabulous places to eat.
A really great start to our honeymoon. We were only there for two nights, but wish we could stay longer.

Suggest a private transfer from Naples airport (around 40 Euros per person) or get to Sorrento or Salerno and then get the boat to Amalfi - this is a cheap way to see the surrounding villages and the coast line.

This is our 2nd visit to Amalfi Holiday Resort and we got to know Susy and Lino very well during our initial stay 3 summers ago. Coming back was like coming home and reuniting with old friends for us!!

To clarify the operation of this resort:

it is a CONDOMINIUM complex, SEPARATELY owned and operated by Lino & Susy's employer (Amalfi Holiday Resort) and the owners of the Hotel Catarina (Amalfi Vacations.it) who employ 2 separate managers for their section of the complex and offer apartments across the road as well. Hence, there is no real office or reception area.

But, per Susy/Lino's instructions during reservation for Amalfi Holiday Resort, if you call her or Lino with your approximate arrival time while en route, they will warmly meet and greet you at the door as they did for us 3 years ago and again this summer. Although busier than they were 3 summers ago, both are available via mobile and are happy to help at any time day or night, and are on site every morning, usually by 7am, to clean the pool and ready apartments for new check in's, and again in the evenings.

Susy and Lino will also help organize boat excursions, airport transfers, etc if you wish. Our family of 4 shared a hired boat this summer with another family of 4 we met at the resort (who rented via Amalfi Vacations.it) and spent 2 hrs exploring the coast, visiting the Grotto Smeraldo and swimming in the sea for 50 euros each family. Kids and parents alike had a blast!

I cannot speak for the managers of the Hotel Catarina affiliated apartments, since we did not reserve with them.

The "Resort Complex":

As other reviewers have mentioned, the refreshing pool, which is gently heated and cleaned each morning by Lino, is a great plus for cooling off at the end of the day or just lounging around, especially if you have children. Both apartments we've stayed in were open, bright and clean. The location of the resort itself is perfect--far enough from the tourist area to be quiet, but close enough to the center to shop and live like locals. Also, one can easily get from Amalfi to other towns via boat or bus, which run frequently in the summer.

We loved meeting the locals and shopped for fresh fish and produce almost daily. Luca & Fabio Lettieri from Gelateria Al Corso and Raffaele & his wife from Pizza Express rosticeria/pizzeria remembered us from 3 summers ago, because our son, then 4 years old, loves gelato and pizza! We exchanged "buon giorno" with Salvatore of the garage every day, even though we didn't have a car!

Again, Amalfi Holiday Resort will be our home away from home on the Amalfi coast until we can afford to purchase.

Best supermarket: Setefi located in the Piazza dei Dogi (not DECO off the main drag). You can find sundries next door at Mecca.
Best grocer: Frutta e Verdura located diagonally across from Gelateria Al Corso.
Best fish monger (pescheria): Da Felice located below the Duomo at left base of steps--get there before 11am.
Best Delizi di limoni: Sal di Riso in Minori
Best Sfogliatelle: Savoia
Best dried pasta: Setaro Brand (made in Torre Annunziata) carried by Eudoteca in Positano on Via Dei Mulini 3--expensive but worth it.
Best restaurant: Da Gemma but expensive
Bakery: Panificio Apicella on the main road.
Pharmacy: Farmacia Degli Arsenali in Piazza dei Dogi

Many memories remain with me of my childhood memories of this place of outstanding natural beauty..my mothers birth place. Picking lemons on my Nonno's terraces for Limoncello, stomping grapes for vino and tomatoes and basil for tomato pasta sauce..oh and the pig for Napoli salami! What a wonderful life. Summer holidays were about cliff diving, free diving at night for octopus and spending time with my wonderful family....Still I believe a hidden gem...If you ever visit, stop and talk to the locals..step unto their lives, and open your eyes to the most beautiful people you may ever meet...Enjoy!

We had an apartment on the second floor near the pool, separate bedroom with another bed in the loft, lots of windows and a balcony on the street side, and a patio out the front door. The place was perfect for the three of us. We used the kitchen every morning for breakfast and cooked dinner there quite often. The location is very good, right on the main street but far enough away from the center of town. Not that hard to find once you go under the red house over the street, look for the green door on the right up a set of steps. Be sure to call ahead to let Susy know when you will arrive, as she does not live on the property but she is very helpful when she is there. There is a washer but you must use the clothesline to dry your clothes. We loved the apartment and would return again and again.

This small complex (about 6 apartments) was exactly what we were looking for.
Large airy rooms, with two sets of full height doors opening onto two different balconies (albeit one is too small to sit out on). Large comfortable bed in very clean apartment. Ours had a main bedroom, a second up some stair (small loft room) and a sette bed. Dining table & patio table on the balcony.
The location in Amalfi is perfect, just away from the tourist area and main square, far enough to be peaceful, close enough to not think about the walk.
** to find walk up hill on the only road until you walk under a tunnel (building built over road) and it is just on your right on the road. It now has large signs on both sides of the road -- Look for the Green Door up the steps-- once we had walked far enough up the hill it is very obvious, after the traffic lights up the hill --

I highly recommend this place as a base for exploring the Amalfi coast & Pompeii etc.
